I let my brother borrow my DVD copy of Smokin' Aces last year (before I switched to BD) well he let my 2 year old niece get a hold of it and apparently she thought it was a toy. He bought me another copy of course but now, family or not, I don't loan out my Bluray's. If they want to see a movie in glorious Hi-Def, they are welcome to come by. That's the extent of my generosity.

Friends get benefit of the doubt. I will lend to them. (I write their name, the name of the movie, and the date on a little piece of paper I keep in my wallet.) If you don't return or return damaged, I wont lend to you again. If you ask me about borrowing another movie, I will ask you about the movie you already borrowed and have not given back yet.
I also never lend something that I think that I will want to watch in the next month. If they ask, I tell them one of my other friends already asked to borrow it, and they can borrow it after them. They usually forget. Another option is inviting them over another time to see it. If they are interrested in "Iron Man", ask if they want to come over Friday and watch it. With this, I've never had a movie come back messed up. And since I started writing down people's names, I haven't lost a movie. Last edited by arrow61095; 12-23-2008 at 03:01 PM. |

The first time my buddy kevin asked to burrow the full collection of all 3 riddick movies, he moved away and his brother sold it... I have no means of contacting him.. One of my closest friends asked if he could burrow Riddick movies, when I came over to his house.. I said sure... I get a email later saying they were in financial crisis and his wife sold his ps3 and sold my riddick collection... He said he was sorry and that he would replace it, he was in tears... saying he would find a way to replace it. I told him don't worry about it, Ill wait for it to come out on blu-ray, and told him that this was a blessing in disguise... I now had a good excuse to replace the entire collection of riddick movies on blu-ray. For those that might not understand the entire collection can be bought for about 9.99 at walmart all three movies... Which are: Pitch Black, ... , Chronicles of Riddick The second one is not rolling to mind at this moment... |

I use to let people borrow dvds but it came back all scratch up. So now I only let my close friends, family or relatives borrow them. I know they would take good care of them. I learn my lesson lol. Let my nephew borrow my dreamcast once. It died a month later. He spilled his drink on it. Oh yeah to those that let their friends borrow stuff but never getting them back. They must not be your true friends. I know its replaceable, but if they are your friends they should take care of your stuff.

I think it's not a fear of lending, but a lack of knowledge on how to properly care for disc media.
I had a roommate who had lots more movies than I did. However, she kept most of her DVDs in a slight pile after watching them, only putting them back in cases when it was time to clean up (company coming over, etc). No huge scratches, but it defintiely adds wear and tear to the discs. She did it with our Netflix DVDs too, so I imagine she was one in a chain of people just abusing discs, eventually rendering them unusable. I just gently reminded her not to do that with my movies. She usually didn't, no big deal, but now that I have Blu Ray I don't think I'd lend them out to someone like her. Maybe some of my other friends with Blu-Ray, but not the casual movie watcher. The other thing is you have to take responsibility FOR your friends (unfortunate, but true). I lent a DVD copy of my favorite film, Memento, to someone who I don't remember. Never seen it again. Asked my closest friends if I lent it to them, but none of them have it. Afterwards, i've kept a list of who has movies of mine. I rarely lend stuff out, but I think that makes remembering who has my stuff even harder, so a spreadsheet I keep on my computer really helps. Also, I see a lot of posts above complaining about a friend who hasn't returned 3 box sets in a row, etc. PLEASE learn after the first time! It sucks that you have to take much more responsibility than your friends do, but that's all you can do to secure your possessions. |

my old techniques:
1. "sure, just bring it back" (no date) 2. "sure, just bring it back in a week" 3. "sure, but i need collateral" 4. "sorry, someone else didn't return one, so i don't rent them anymore" 5. "sure" (if its a borrow-worthy friend) new technique: No. (and no, we don't have to give a reason) 1-5 above were all lies. i honestly didn't want to loan them out. so i'm being honest. i don't want to loan out my car either ![]() |

Seriously, what the hell do people do to disks when they borrow them? The condition of some of my cases and discs that have been returned to me are ridiculous. For this reason, I've never loaned any of my DVDs or blus out, but back in college when DVD was still king, I had some roommates that liked to rummage through my movies while I was gone. I was left with several scratched up discs and a brutally beaten Band of Brothers DVD tin. Last year, I lived with my now ex-gf and her cousin came over while I was out and they played Halo 3 together. I came home and found that special edition tin all smashed in too. What the hell is everyone's problem? Basic disc care is VERY simple.

I love to lend things out because it means you have someone to talk to about that particular movie (or game, whatever). It also means that person owes you one
![]() I have lost things though. never got my Eurotrip dvd back from a friend, Kingdom Hearts on ps2 as well. and soul calibur for dreamcast. I am pretty sure that's all I've ever lost though. and for the tons of other movies I've lent out really it's still worth it. hell, when me and my parents used to go on vacation my mom would ask my friends to watch our dogs. I'd leave a paper in my room, trell my friends they could borrow anything at all as long as they signed it out. I guess I just like being that guy. |

I only lend out my stuf to a couple of good friends. I dont even lend my stuff to my family because I know how they are. They might lend it out to someone else or have my disks stacked up ontop of eachother. Which I absolutly hate. How hard is it to put the disk back in the case when you are done? I just lie and say sorry that isnt mine so I cant lend it to you.
