To this layman's eyes, based on a viewing last night, it looks like the DNR crew has had its way here. Interior shots look especially bad.

In general, no – as that defeats the purpose of HDM.

There are always exceptions…………….. if you have no anti-nausea medication in the household, then I would say that for some viewers, 4PH is indeed recommended for watching things like Cloverfield or Friday Night Lights………………

I think that has now been established. The question remains why? When dealing with the classics, I am not so quick (as others) to jump on people in the industry and assign negative ‘motives’ (i.e. to cater to the uneducated TV watching masses) without knowing the full history of the production.

The upcoming symposium has at least three of the asset management gurus of the majors attending and hopefully Deci can gather further intelligence on the matter. As long as he is a good conscientious student with his attendance and doesn’t ‘relax’ while in Hollywood….

There is a rather notorious case of an independent feature that was shot in which the whole thing, and I mean the whole thing is out of focus.

Default Penton- NEED YOUR HELP!!

Can you please help your blu Deaf and hearing impaired fellows by contacting studios and encourage as i am going to. Please do share your knowledge or feedback.

Here my letter to Lionsgate and BDA

Lionsgate,

Lionsgate Studio has millions of diversified fans and I hope the studio will take its customer’s concerns as seriously as if it was the Studio’s. The concern I have as a Deaf movie lover in America, who enjoys and buy your movies on Blu-ray, is that unfortunately my Lions gate High Definition experience is limited by your studio’s lack of providing Subtitles for Deaf and hearing impaired (SDH). The only subtitles that are offered on Lionsgate discs’ are, English subtitle with only dialogue and Spanish. Others (Deaf or not) and I felt that we were excluded from our movie experience without being SDH accessible.

We really do depend on SDH because we can grasp better at what is going on during the movie. Without it, we are lost not knowing if the phone rang or, gun shots, someone shouts or many other noises. I’d like to know when John J. Rambo shoots his machine gun and launches his rockets or even when he is shot at during the movie. We are truly lost! It saddens me because I truly enjoy Lions gate movies! I felt that whoever worked on Blu-ray has disappointed me when I watch movies I truly want to see and know I will not have the full Blu-ray experience. I am very pleased with Fox, Warner Bros, Paramount, DreamWorks, Disney, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, New Line Cinema, and Sony with their effort including SDH and other subtitles. That’s where my money is going most of the time and there are times I wished I had bought most of Lions gate movies. I do buy and am not satisfied with my money’s worth. Don’t you find this disappointing knowing that you are one of the most well known and yet the only studio that doesn’t provide that accessibility for people who really need it?

My hearing wife is very disappointed too because she knows how I love watching movies with her and felt I was left out too. Our night watching SAW for the first time was very upsetting because saw is about being scared and suspenseful, then I found out that it didn’t have SDH feature and I couldn’t follow with screaming or background noises. It is like watching movies without sound, you would be upset with lack sound for your High Definition experience and you would buy other studios that provide the beyond high Definition Blu-ray experience.

Like I said, I hope the studio will take its customer concerns seriously because I truly want them to enhance our high definition experience and make it better. I pasted Subtitle for Deaf and Hearing Impaired information from wiki.com just to back me up.

SDH
"SDH" is an American term the DVD industry introduced. It is an acronym for "Subtitles for the deaf and hard-of-hearing", and refers to regular subtitles in the original language where important non-dialog audio has been added, as well as speaker identification, useful when the viewer cannot otherwise visually tell who is saying what.
High definition disc media (HD DVD, Blu-ray disc) uses SDH subtitles as the sole method because technical specifications do not require HD to support line 21 closed captions. Some Blu-ray discs, however, are said to carry a closed caption stream that only displays through standard definition connections. Many HDTVs allow the end–user to customize the captions, including the ability to remove the black band.
Use by those not deaf or hard-of-hearing
Although same-language subtitles and captions are produced primarily with the deaf and hard-of-hearing in mind, many hearing film and television viewers choose to use them. This is often done, because the presence of closed captioning and subtitles ensures that not one word of dialog will be missed. Films and television shows often have subtitles displayed in the same language, if the speaker has a speech disability and/or an accent. In addition, captions may further reveal information that would be difficult to pick up on otherwise. Some examples of this would be the song lyrics; dialog spoken quietly or by those with unfamiliar accents; or supportive, minor dialog from background characters. It is argued that such additional information and detail will enhance the overall experience and allow the viewer a better grasp on the material. Furthermore, people learning a foreign language may sometimes use same-language subtitles to better understand the dialog while not having to resort to a translation.

Thank you for your time and hope to hear a response from you.
Jeffrey

Blu-ray Disc Association,

First of all, I would like to congratulate you on winning the format war; I knew Blu-ray was superior from day one when I was first introduced to Blu-ray. My Blu movie experience was enhanced with High Definition and subtitles that I rely on. Yes, I am a Deaf Blu-ray adopter and require using English SDH subtitle to have my Beyond High Definition Experience. I cannot hear anything with DTS-HD Master, Dolby Digital, etc.

When I was first introduced, my impression was that all Blu ray discs have subtitles as I was told. That was why I buy Blu-ray because of that features and superior picture quality. Now more studios are joining the Blu ray wagon and “the beyond high definition experience” slogan is tainted now. Lionsgate does not provide subtitle for Deaf and hearing impaired (SDH).. Not only Lions gate lacks doing so, now low budget studios are Blu, and there are no subtitles at all. Echo Bridge Entertainment comes to mind with their low budget movies. There are no subtitles accessible to people who need it and this is disappointing.

I often hear that BDA has to license studios before they are able to release movies on Blu-ray. I was wondering why BDA didn’t enforce all studios to provide English subtitles preferably SDH, to enhance their Blu experience. You should disqualify/revoke studios license if they did not met “Beyond High Defintion experience” that BDA loves to use that slogan. Low budget studios will ruin that experience by not providing English subtitles and it happened with DVD. DVD’s are tainted with bad accessibility for disabled people. I would hate to see them do the same with Blu-ray. Blu ray is about superiority and ultimate experience? No?

It is discrimination when Blu-ray has high Definition experience in audio such as

True HD
DTS-HD Master
DTS-HR (High Resolution)
Dolby Digital
Dolby Digital PLI
Dolby Digital PL II

Dolby Digital ES
Dolby Digital +
Uncompressed Linear PCM
Linear PCM

And Deaf and hearing impaired people only have few accessible (a few certain studios do not provide fully)

Lionsgate: (thumbs down)

English and Spanish (NO SDH)

Fox:

English SDH, English, French, Spanish, Chinese and Korean

Disney: (thumbs up)

English SDH, French, Spanish

DreamWorks: (thumbs up)

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer: (thumbs up)

New Line Cinema: (thumbs up)

Paramount: (thumbs up)

Sony: (thumbs up)

Universal: (thumbs up)

English, Portuguese, Japanese, Traditional Chinese, Korean, Thai, Indonesian, Malay

Warner Bros: (thumbs up)

English SDH, English, French, Spanish

Weinstein:

Unknown

Echo Bridge Entertainment: (thumbs down)

NONE (except for Beer League, English subtitle)

Blue Underground:

Unknown

Thank you for your time and please help your Blu fellows,

Jeffrey

For those inquiring minds, here’s the salient part of the e-mail that was distributed…………

"It is with great sadness that I must inform you that yesterdays fire destroyed nearly 100% of the archive prints kept here on the lot. Due to this we will be unable to honor any film bookings of prints that were set to ship from here. Over the next few weeks and months we will be able to try and piece together what material we do have and if any prints exist elsewhere. For the time being please check your rental confirmations and look under shipping instructions. If the print was set to ship from the studio then you date is now canceled. If the shipping instructions say ship from Deluxe then those dates are still good."

Just by posting your request here, it will be read by people in charge……..or their assistants (for instance, you have no idea the flak I caught for leaking the high resolution scanner testing of the LoA negative).

I will do my best privately to bring more visibility to the issue.

Now, if you can just teach me how to multi-quote somebody in one post rather than doing a bunch of singles (if it can be done fast), I be ready for computer science school.

Hit the "Quick reply button" (the notepad and pen next to "Edit Quote". 4th from the left. Highlight the text you want to show as a quote and then click the last button on the row (the one that looks like a yellow speech bubble)

The button right next to it lets you link to an image
