I’m looking for input here from early adopters. I’m revealing little at this time.
If BD-3D can be very similar to the experience I had with U2 3D (of course in a home setting), I would like for the BDA to explore that branch. U23D was an awesome experience. If any of you haven't seen it, I recommend it highly.

I have no problem with extending the BD spec to include 3d. Frankly I wouldn't care if it became available this year (not that it will), but personally I wouldn't be buying a new player for a couple of years anyway.

As far as 3d goes, I see no reason why it couldn't exist and be compatible with existing players. By that I obviously don't mean existing players would show 3d, just that a disk with 3d should still be viewable in 2d with existing players.

After all, for 3d, you have 2 images only slightly different from each other. Should be relatively simple to encode the 2nd image from the first one because they are so similar. I don't know enough about AVC to say for sure, but the motion compensation should allow for pretty low bandwidth encoding the alternate stream. Also you should need I frames only in the first stream, none at all in the second.

You could use the PiP stream for the 2nd stream and just have PiP not work on current players.

I think it better to say……….”Think of how many uninformed English reading people will google Blu-ray also to learn about the format, and come to this website.”

Yep, besides Camerons' Avatar I believe his next projects will also be 3D - BattleAngel Alita and eventual sequels to both movies. Then there's Tintin from Spielberg and Jackson and the possible re-release of the Star Wars saga in 3D.

Looks like it's the next big thing and that it's here to stay.

Penton, in response to your request for input on 3D, we have seen that the anti-BD FUD, shills, and viral marketing have continued unabated despite the end of the format war. I think those forces would like nothing better than another talking point about incomplete specs to continue the consumer confusion. My main reaction to 3D is how those forces would use that as another anti-BD talking point.

Personally, 3D doesn't interest me. I would be much more excited about 4k. But I know you have said people like me should not expect that in our homes in my lifetime. . .

YES! I would definitely be interested in buying one. I am not concerned about profiles as they relate to FEATURES available on the specific player. Every piece of electronics does this so I don't understand why people keep forcing Blu-Ray to come up with a single "profile".

If confusion is the concern, address it with marketing but from my perspective, there are other pieces of electronics that will be more confusing to the consumer.

Beside what is so difficult about understanding that player "A" has 3D capability while player "B" does not.

My biggest concern about 3D are the film qualities. I saw Beowolf in 3D, while the 3D effects where good, I did not enjoy the movie.

Interested, perhaps, but I think any such development needs to be kept very low on the radar. The issue of consumer confusion is definitely an issue - even hinting at such a development coming down the pipeline officially could produce an Osborne Effect even if 99.999999999999% of the population have no way to view such content in their home theaters.

In other words, until we start seeing a statistically non-zero number of home theater displays that can accurately produce the 3D effect, there really isn't much to be gained in publicizing such a future feature, while incurring a non-zero risk factor.

Patrick, read this post I made yesterday in case you missed it…………..

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...postcount=2196

Their voice (the FUDsters) is no longer being heard. They’re just speaking/posting within their own social circles with no effect on the outside world, now that the war is over. I have no concern over that energy. My concern is how any future unbiased consumers will react to possible future enhancements of the format…..not how those enhancements will be degraded on internet websites/forums by old anti-Blu-ray factions.

In regards to film based 4K content delivered to your home. Yes, don’t count on it in your lifetime…………esp. given the fact that when 99.9 % of motion pictures are considered for digital archiving, they don’t receive a higher resolution scan than a 4K.
So, in essence you would be selling the digital master itself to the consumer. Heck, the last motion picture that I can recall which was delivered as a 4K DCP to theaters with digital projectors was Da Vinci Code, so it will be awhile before you even see that resolution commonly at your local Cineplex.

In regards to the upcoming film project on the format war that I spoke about previously,
would you still be inclined to purchase the disc, if you knew….. going in, that the filmmaker carried some……baggage?

Meaning, not that he personally was necessarily well known as a protagonist for one side of the war but, that he is strongly associated with one of the companies that was pro-HD DVD from the get-go.

Well, if you're talking about "the Slice" whose Pizza is actually quite good, then you're either referring to the one on Ocean Park right off of 14th (Santa Monica) or the one off (and this is one I'm thinking of) of Wilshire in Santa Monica quite close to The Whitehouse.

Of course, I could be totally wrong seeing as how I haven't watched Spidey 2 in awhile

I don't trust any pizza that doesn't come out of Philly and New York (Chicago deep dish is heresy) personally, but next time I'm out there I will try your "joes" and pass judgement

And tell those A$$holes at pinks to not show up and place a 50 dog order half an hour before I've got a meeting at a studio next time

I, being a pro blu-ray guy from the start( not of blu-ray but of my awareness of the war), would be interested in a movie about the format war from any perspective. All documentaries will biased no matter how much they're based in fact.

It's like Michael Moore. He is extremely liberal, almost too much in some senses (Fahrenheit 911). Because he leans so far one way, he doens't do the otherside justice. EDIT: I agree with his point of view, I just feel like he loses some credit when he doesn't show the other side of the story.

It seems like for this documentary to fare well among the blu's, he will have to choose a side, but make sure he gives both sides an even chance. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy Moore's documentaries (especially Roger & Me), but if he was doing a documentary about the format war from the Red side, I would be scared.

never been there. But now I'll have to try it. My dad's from Staten Island, so he's never satisfied out here, but he's gotten used to it. Now, I know not to compare to the East Coast, but in Santa Monica, I'll have to find out and give you my feedback.

Aren't you in CA? That's a hell of a delivery requirement.

30 hours or its free?

You should try Amato (traditional) and Mama's Pizza (thincrust) if you're ever in Toronto. The former especially makes some absolutely incredible pies.

That would be an understatement.

I think it is a great idea though and if done properly could be a great look at the format war and some of the drama that outsiders may not have seen.
