What's next, a shot by shot remake of Psycho?

UGH!

How odd. A full press restoration of a classic will HURT the box office of a remake, I would think. Why go see a remake when you can see the real thing?

Gary

P.S. Other things (accumulated):

Harris (LoA for Columbia) - Studio
Scorsese - Director
Steve McQueen quote (went to same acting school as De Niro) - Actor
Panic Room (Jody Foster) - Actor

Taxi Driver

Lowry and IMAX are not real time. Real bad artifacts were easy to see nonetheless some years ago. Have not seen recent Lowry or IMAX DRM material.

Correct. I see what you’re saying now. I just read the first phrase of the first sentence of patrick’s linked article.
All of my comments were related to DVNR 2k image processing systems in post work for theatrical presentations. In that regard, grain can be quite obtrusive in film that has been pushed in the lab or under and over-exposed in the camera………intentionally or not. Also, I didn’t even get into the topic of with effects work how easy it is for mismatched grain structure to ruin a composited scene - when the grain in different elements is dancing to different beats.

Grain/noise reduction processes used further downstream specifically with home video versions in mind is a completely different subject of which I guess is indeed the current concern.

Let me say this. I think of grain like salt in your meal. It’s a very personal and subjective thing……..i.e. different people certainly prefer different amounts. I think that there is no *right* amount. Personally, I like a little salt in my meal (films), on the other hand, I personally don’t like an excessive amount of salt. More importantly, if I’m the chef, I don’t like my recipe (including salt content) altered further on down the line no matter where people are eating my delicacy (home theater)……….which I think is what you are getting at.

Sometimes I think that new members to the home theater experience believe that the more crystal clear a Blu-ray movie is………the better the “PQ”. They fail to realize that movies are not intended to be like a crystal clear broadcast of an NFL game on a Sunday afternoon. Directors, D.P.’s etc. are artists and movies are an expressive medium of which grain content is one ingredient.

Happy ?

I agree but, I think you are/were looking at *full blown versions* of these non real-time processes which can be adjusted downwards in a less *aggressive* fashion if directed to do so. That's the real key here, i.e. *how far to turn the knob*.

Michel, in fact, if you play “upright bass” or are a “rockabilly kid”, you may just be able to charm more info out of this person (see bottom box on the left--- “Jeff’s Company”) …………………….

P.S.
In fact, I think it is even possible to apply very mild grain reduction in real time (to particular scenes) that results in no artifacts visible to you or anyone else for that matter, if the operator is very careful and judicious with the process.

Possibly. But why bother if the reduction is so subtle you need the original and split screen to see minor differences? Usually this stuff is used to have some impact. And that can easily translate to benefits (less noise/grain) and costs (artifacts).

Looks kosher to me. Looks like my original guess (which would have been Dr. Strangelove) was off by about 20 years. But the evidence does fit.

^^^ Exactly. It's the sort of reference you'd expect.

Leo G. Carroll: In North by Northwest and Trantula
Rocky Horror: "Leo G. Carroll was over a barrel when Trantula took to the hills"

Taxi driver was "restored" by Columbia a couple of years ago with the supervision of Scorsese....no additional work is necessary.
