Peter THX/Rob Tomlin………………
To put it in terms of pixels (which everyone here except for Deci appears more familiar with) rather than line pair per mm -

Cinematographers believe that excellent 35mm anamorphic capture is sort of analogous to 4K resolution whereas excellent Super-35/1.85 is similar to about 3k. I don’t care what film compositors think, as they work with what they are given from lensers.

So, the extremely cool once in a lifetime experience is a trip to WB studios?

What's more, tomorrow at Noon (Pacific) we'll be announcing the first of several fundraising events for Paul here in the L.A. area. What we're announcing tomorrow is EXTREMELY cool - a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will be of interest to almost any movie fan.

I received a PM from a new member asking what I meant to by “aliasing artifacts” in regards to one of the cameras used for Crank alluded to a couple pages back.

Basically aliasing artifacts are undesirable artifacts produced by image detail exceeding the sampling frequencies used (in this case the Canon XL2, listed in the imdb technical specs on Crank). They essentially fit into two categories ………………

1. Raster Scan aliasing – an irregular effect on fine horizontal lines, or the jagged edges produced by oblique or curved lines.
2. Temporal aliasing – when it appears during a motion picture that the spokes of a wheel are rotating backwards.

I was referring to #1 in regards to my prior post on the matter.

You bolded "a lot" in the message to responded to.

Does that mean it could be "a little" better at a higher bit rate? In my mind I'm picturing an "S-curve" with a horizontal scale of bit rate and a vertical scale of quality where the top arc at the left is almost horizontal.

The questions then become:
a) Why not make an improvement, even minimal, if the space is available?
b) Is the time/cost necessary to make that improvement not worth the effort?

This raises another question for me. Is it possible to determine the amount of space remaining after the audio, menus and extras are finalized and set the encoder to "best possible encode to fill remaining space?

I also have a suspicion that this practice is really motivated by a desire to leave room for a PQ improvement with "superbit" editions down the road a bit.

Agreed Penton, National Treasure: Book of Secrets (not sure when they added the "2") looked *exactly* as it did when I saw it digitally projected theatrically. The Blu-ray represents the original photography.

On that, National Treasure films are Super35.

Thanks for the response, Penton. Should I understand that to mean that one reason for the resistance would be to be able to use the disc space for other things (extras, multiple audio tracks)?

Well, between all the lavish home theaters, the Hollywood-insider special events, freebie-tickets, and now Rob's ride, I've become much too envious of many of the posters here.

Nice wheels, Mr. Tomlin. Well done

I know that it is small consolation but you can follow the link halfway down this page and Sony will mail you a free DVD with the update (they say 7-10 days).

It's the only place I go to enjoy a movie anymore. Their policy is no kids after 6pm. Fantastic beer selection and the downtown location even has a liquor license. And they do kick people out.
