Maxpower,
I was directed to this General Discussion thread via a PM so I made a couple comments as linked…..

and on a lighter, more *technical* note

Penton, this is a bit of a different question, but from your experience what are the determining factors in what format will succeed in any given format war, I'm not so much asking for this format war as it's pretty much decided, but the format wars to come.

I was wondering why max closed his thread, the LOTR's thread DID look like AVS. Why must people argue so much?

I know you meant that as a rhetorical question, but in this case there was a single sentence that sparked the whole thing, a sentence written by someone who doesn't normally say that kind of thing. I think the reaction to that sentence went too far, but I can't honestly say that a sentence like that directed at me wouldn't have gotten me angry.

More generally, I think we may be witnessing the common phenomenon where a group smooths over their differences and works together while struggling with an outside threat, but then the differences emerge and the unity fractures once the outside threat is gone.

Also, I think people have been in a combative mood over this format war, and now that the writing is on the wall, it's hard to change that mentality. There is probably a connection between all the "is anybody else bored now that Blu-ray has won?" posts and the increased hostility we're seeing.

I think it's something the moderators are going to have to keep an eye on. And of course we all should try to not inflame others, to not take the bait if someone goads us, and to stay out of it if two people start squabbling (aside from hitting the Report button).

(Sorry, Penton-Man, for polluting your thread.)

If we're not going to see "Lawrence of Arabia" this year, then that is indeed a great shame. I saw a demo disc being played at a store a while back and the PQ was absolutely amazing... stunning in fact. If the release was anything like the BD demo, then this title would definitely show what BD can do... and make the HD-DVD fanboys weep!!!

I will still buy Ghandi though... Hope it is ABC or at least there is a B version released.

One big reason I come here is to read from the insiders here, especially Penton and Max. Their contribution here is of upmost value and I was shocked to see that a couple of members have chased Max out.

I would like to see a "time out" for those involved and have Max come back.

those people should be banned...

no insider here should be "chased out"...

They did not chase max out, the bickering just irritated him.

If you read the thread, none deserve to be banned. Scolded yes.

after the 1st 8 or so posts, I didn't even bother....

but if an insider was "chased out" much like what happens on AVS...then yeah..

but if he was just irritated...I don't know how it came about as I didn't read much further into the thread...

however I quickly noticed people instigating immediately...

as much as I disagree with how things are run in these forums at times...the Insiders should not be instigated....they make this forum one of the 2 sites I check for info on Blu daily..

Yepp, there was more than once when the arguing parties should have just shut their mouths and walked away. It felt like reading the insiders thread at AVS.

Hey Penton, thanks for all the info, as always.

Today I walked into the largest video store in Montreal to find a rather big surprise, they had restocked every single Paramount Blu-ray release ever made. At least it sure appeared that way. Everything from Shooter to Dreamgirls had a min of 13 copies. When I asked to speak to the manager he told me that he could order any Paramount/DreamWorks Blu-ray release that had been released before.

So the question is, if this was a new shipment and they can continue to get new shipments, what the heck is going on? We've been told time and time again that these new shipments didn't mean anything, but it was rather striking to see every single Paramount release right before my eyes. I mean, 28 copies of Shooter?!?

Could it be possible that Paramount has released some back stock? I just find it so bizarre that every single retailer now has ample supplies of Paramount titles when just one month ago, it was bloody impossible to find almost anything Paramount related. I could understand if one or two retailers were able to get new stock, but every single retailer?

Sorry guys, but i have been reading Darins posts for years, he is a great guy, and respected by many, no way would it be right to ban someone with his experience of HT etc.
He also does some stuff for home theatre secrets so hes not some idiot, he does actually know what he is talking about and im sure thats why Rob Tomlin found others reaction a little off. seemed like somthing and nothing to me.
People should also remember that just because someone else has a different view does not mean they are attacking Blu Ray, this has also become a negative point with blu fans mainly due to being on the defensive against team red all the time. There are certain thing that blu should be kicked in the nuts for, no point livin in a dream world.

I think Max just took it a bit too straight up. Darin is no red fanboy, but he does like to get to the bottom of things and others take that as argumentitive/comfrontation.

Ive been there when Darin has tore the red team a new one, so i would be just as worried if Darin left as i would be max.

lastly, we wont always get on with each other chaps, not now team red is in decline. There are things we just all wont agree on.

Darin is a fine contributor to this site...

but his approach in that thread was nonsense...

I wasn't suggesting a "ban" maybe just a weekend suspension.

The whole thing reminded me of the "nothing fight' in Dane Cook's joke.

Penton,
Hope Spain is going well! Enjoy while you are there. I noticed in Home Media Mag that interim agreements with the WGA are being signed. May be an odd question, but do the other studios/companies take notice of this in their decision making process, or is it just more of a pressure point to come to some kind of agreement? Just trying to get a better idea of thinking behind these negotiations. Thanks.

I agree. Has anybody here attended 'collaborative negotiations and conflict solving' workshops?

Be hard on the problem, but soft on the people. Does it ring any bells?
