Not only that, but with many new feature films that are going through a 2K digital intermediate post production process, they normally don’t have a conformed negative as an ‘original’ element (unless the post house conformed it after the D.I. was performed to match the digitally assembled negative scans).

These new feature 35mm films are essentially assembled digitally with a great deal of post work done to the 2K digital scans, with the result that in future years it will become difficult (and more expensive) to redo the work at 4K (which more closely resembles the actual resolution of typical 35mm film)…….even if studio film preservation departments desire to.

You know, all the forum talk regarding inter-cutting 35mm and IMAX’s 15/70 format and whether people like the changing aspect ratios, etc. would be alleviated if good ole 70mm theaters still existed in a plentiful fashion today, or at least were as commonplace as IMAX theaters.

Despite what is listed on the site…………………..
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0893382/technical

For some of the wide shots ^, Marty S. also used an Arri 765 camera (which is a 5-perf 65mm camera).
Heck, the resolution is similar to IMAX 15/70 and if you intercut that with 35mm, aspect ratios no longer become a real *issue*.
I would have liked to have seen Marty’s utilization of that camera (which is a lot lighter and less noisy) also spur some sort of interest/movement in the direction toward that larger format ; however, I think word got out among DP’s that Marty’s team experienced considerable focus issues with that old camera, which is now long in the tooth.
I see we’ve got another Marty around who has posted an excellent review of another feature film here…..

For the record, this film marks the first time that Steven S. tipped his toe into the digital intermediate process (after having evaluated a DI test scene-while the movie was still in production)…………and he liked it.

I don't whether to be pleased or sad about that.

As you've already pointed out, unless the DI is done 4K, it's damn hard to recover it later.

Will we ever see anything shot on 65mm again? Or how soon will 8K cameras be used?

Hello Mr. Penten-Man, let me just say that I had to sign up here and thank you for all the work you do here in enlightening us forum members in the ways of hollywood.

I however have an important (at least to me) question that also comes with my registration. You might be the only one who could possibly help me in my dilemma, so please, please help me or at least tell me how I might find my answer.

Here it is: Is Paramount talking or at least thinking of a new release of the Friday the 13th films on blu? I heard that they may release the first one with all the uncut gore on dvd, but not blu. Could they be thinking blu, even to coincide with the dvd and remake in theaters? Any info you might know would mean the world to me. I'm a die hard fan of these films, and to see them get the attention they deserve (like all the uncut footage and digitally restored) before I die would be such a wonderful thing.

You are my only hope..... I appreciate any info you could spare, and thank you once again for your time. I know these may not be classics like LOA or Gone with the Wind, or even comparatively good cinema, but they are some of the best films that I like from my childhood....

It was a needed pragmatic choice given the fact that there is a tad over 45 min. of VFX (from ILM) screen time that had to seamlessly flow with the non visual effects sequences, plus it served as an aid to the complex cinematography in regards to lighting of the action sequences on location.

NHK has a prototype 8K camera now that they’ve used to show clips.

But a camera is just one piece of the final outcome, as a presentation ultimately hinges on things like workflows and demand.

Given the fact that as we speak, there is relatively little demand (except for archival uses) or even opportunity for 4K finishing or delivery elements (DCP’s), I wouldn’t hold my breath on seeing 8K theatrical presentations arising from 8K digital camera capture.

Sorry, I have no knowledge of those particular titles.
I would suggest you ask Jeff Kleist (on the Digital Bits Insider Thread) and if he doesn’t know anything, perhaps he can contact Bill Hunt to see if he’s heard anything about it.

b.t.w. –Welcome to the forum and you needn’t make excuses to me for any “of the best films that I like from my childhood”.
Statements like that demonstrate film enthusiasm.

People, you know our forum has become a world power when a North Korean type segregated society has developed to prevent direct access to the outside world.

Forums gain and hold membership based upon their merits, not on North Korean type isolationist mentalities or accepting advertising dollars to turn their web pages into mini-billboards……at the top, the middle and the bottom.
I've gone from a regular lurker over there to an avid poster here. I rarely if ever go over there these days.

On a similar note, what are your thoughts on "The Thing" and the claim by the janitors that it has been digitally scrubbed once again? I absolutely love this movie and will be picking it up, but have not seen it yet. I was curious if you (or any other insiders- feel free to chime in) had any thoughts or insight on this title.

Any help would be appreciated. Perhaps a "step-on-it" nudge to the Samsung engineers who need to come up with a firmware update to fix the first Blu-ray player consumers could get, the BD-P1000, so it can play "Iron Man" (Blu-ray).

All you get is a black screen!

You would think that compatibility issues would have been ironed out before the release date. on such a popular title.
(No pun intended. )

Fortunately, I had used a PS3 in my theater room for a premiere showing, but later couldn't show it to my wife, as she rested in the bedroom.

Feel sorry for consumers who only have the Samsung.

The entire problem with that title lies in BD-Live. Disconnect your network jack or otherwise remove the player from your network and it should load up without difficulty.

To be honest, it should load up either way without issue now that people have downloaded the initial BD-Live Iron Man package.

Not connected to the network in the bedroom.

Excerpt from Samsung Chat last night:
Davin S: Yes, actually we are having compatibility problem right now with Iron man
Davin S: Engineers already aware of this and working to release the firmware soon to fix this.

Nothing in the near future. We're probably talking Halloweenish next year when the remake comes out if there are plans

Actually, a company just opened a little while ago that will be testing such things for the studios. Typically the first the hardware people hear about it is when the disc hits retail, and then it takes 3-4 weeks to fix the problem and to make sure the new firmware doesn't introduce new ones.

Not really, as I don’t know anything about that Uni title.

Have any reviewers found a significant difference upon viewing the Blu-ray version vs. the HD DVD version in motion or is this just another case of screenshot *scientists* that have way too much time on their hands comparing static screenshots purposely searching for minute changes…..resulting in the invariable *we was cheated on PQ* syndrome?

Sometimes any minimal differences in encodes can be attributed to variances between individual compressionists, or technicians working under a deadline, rather than any concerted effort to advance some fictitious widespread Hollywood agenda that screenshot *scientists* come up with……….if the title was prepared from the same HD master by the same post house on the same encoder with the same software version.

I would just like to give a tip of the recognition hat to fellow Blu-ray.com member “film mixer” (I’m not exactly sure of the spelling of his handle here) as he and Tony Lamberti from Todd-AO just recently picked up an HPA nomination in the category “Outstanding Audio Post- Television” for…..

John Adams, Episode 3: “Don’t Tread on Me”

Good goin Marc !

Seems to be another static screenshot comparison. I would agree that there are differences in the screenshots, but I would greatly hesitate to call one of them "bad" or over-processed. I'm holding final judgement till I get a chance to pick it up, but was just curious of your thoughts.

My reservation about the Panasonic player that I bought: no bitrate meter (at least not that I can find). For that reason (among others) I use my PS3 instead.

And I also bought a Samsung player in September of 2006 because that was the only player available to buy at that time.
