But again, even if this sort of thing was done, what side should face up and which side should face down?
Do you think the mainstream public will be able to make that correct determination?
No. They don't read the manuals for anything. Even if you were to color the hub label blue on the correct side, the vast majority wouldn't even realize there WAS a correct side

You mentioned before that you were anchored off Salt Island.

I remember doing some night diving in a bunch of caves (shallow water).
Was that Salt Island or some other place in the BVI’s?

Any female divers on the trip?
Many female divers, including the divemaster. Why do you ask?

The caves aren't off Salt - there was some snorkelling going into some of the small caves on a few of the other islands. With the full moon the current was a bit of an issue, and I actually pulled out of one of the night dives due to it on the Bow of the Rhone (didn't feel like fighting my way down, exhausted, to 80ft).

But, yeah, that's a hell of a wreck, it's in beautiful shape considering the water it's in and how often it's been visited... Spectacular, as you had indicated.

Lots of life, only saw a sleeping Nurse shark (pretty damn adorable, I must say), but had an awesome experience with a turtle that almost swam right up to my mask... The group was incredible as well, really great mix of people...

Default Riding Giants

Dr. Penton,

Riding Giants is now only a month away.

Please tell me everything you know about how this film was captured and the work flow to bring it to Blu-ray. I'm trying to get a feel for what we might expect.

Gracias

So, you’re telling me that somebody stole from my vault at home our *private* honeymoon video which documents every day (and night) in which the wife and I repeatedly consummated the marriage?

I’ve got to make a quick phone call!

Oh, you mean the surfer movie.

It’s an eclectic mix of modern day (well, 2003 at least, the year it was shot) and archival footage. It will drive the ‘consistency’ picture quality gurus nuts as the *new* footage is basically split into four sections with each particular section shot on Super 16 with different film stock and different lighting to emphasize a different ‘look’ applicable to each section/topic……………purposely by the filmmaker.

Add to that, the archival portions consist of multiple formats including Super 8, 16mm, still photos and Betacam, you’ve got yourself a true potpourri of different formats and different film stocks…..the conglomeration of which received a fabulous ovation at the opening night of the Sundance Film Festival in ’04 and was quickly acquired by Sony Pictures Classics.

I can go into a little more detail at a later time, as it’s after 8:00 P.M. and I’m leaving the office now.

no you did not, and you still have not. before all you made was an unsupported comment that it was true for DVD18 and then jumped to the conclusion that it was true for BD59.

IN the end the problem is easy. The cost of production = bill of materials + time. tme is very small and should be relatively even, bill of materials, should be 2x for the plastic for separates instead of a combo.

Then comes the next step, one of usability (i.e. rejects) obviously BD59 will have a higher reject rate then BD50+DVD9, but it needs to be substantially higher to counter the much higher cost.
For example if we assume that the cost = 1.5x higher and 10% rejects for splits then combos need to have 40% rejects to make it balance out. if we have 2x and 5% it is 53%. if 1.2x and 7% it becomes 22%. The question is what is the difference in cost (which should be in combos favour) and what is the reject rates for both. The issue is that if the reject rate is too high (let's say 40% or 53%) no one would offer it, so it can't be that high. The issue is that when DVD came out replication time was much longer, so it would have played a larger factor, but as time gets smaller it plays a smaller effect in cost. And as you pointed out earlier, it is not only disks, fancier cases that hold more disks also cost more

Hey Penton - thought you might enjoy reading this post from the NIN community, they've been doing some pretty amazing things over the last two years since TR parted ways with Interscope...including offering the last album for free to anyone in multiple formats including 24/96 .flac files.

Big project here, in case anyone you know might be interested in helping out, or just have any comments in general?

Definitely one of the coolest fan communities around.

Why wouldn't the same be true for BD59?

Anthony, you admit you don't know the pricing structure for optical disc replication, be it DVD, BD or an arguably experimental bonding of two BD and DVD platters into a single BD59. Yet you keep rejecting what I've wrote without offering any proof or logical reasoning to back up your defense of BD59.

Also, your math of percentages is a little suspect, especially when you have no replication cost numbers to fill in the blanks.

You're trying to treat BD59 as if its production and handling amounts to only one disc when that really is not the case. The disc replication plant is making two thinner, more fragile discs and sandwiching them together. BD59 is more complicated and far more prone to error than producing two separate BD50 and DVD9 discs.

The only difference at all in favor of BD59 is the tiny difference in product packaging. That's it. Let's not forget a 2-disc BD case is much closer in size to a single disc case than the 2-disc Amary DVD cases of old. The small savings of packaging a single disc is in high danger of being more than offset by numerous returns and refunds due to defective discs and discs that develop laser rot. Compound that with negative word of mouth on those types of discs that is sure to spread when the failures occur.

It bears repeating that more than one combo disc format has met with failure this decade. DVD-18 & DVD-14 flopped. HD-DVD/DVD combo discs flopped. TotalHD flopped. DualDisc flopped. Do you see the pattern? What technological miracle occurred that will make BD59 any different?

Thank you for the detailed response on the "capture" portion. Eager to hear more about the transfer portion when you get a chance.

I would have to dispute your claim that DVD18/14 flopped with evidence of Warner Brothers still ordering millions of these discs every year. The point that everyone is missing that even a BD59 will be sold with the extra DVD for downloadable content per AACS spec until managed copy is finalized.

I'll choose "A" and "C" to perpetuate the facade.

Oh... and when the heck is Duke going to release that Isle of Man Blu-ray?
