Now I only hope that it will not be all snowy tomorrow as I do not actually live in Berlin and I have to drive there by car

If only the Germans had learned to build good roadways and decent automobiles...

Oh, wait. Never mind.

You got a point there Unfortunately heavy snow has absolutely no respect for our very nice roads and not even for the famous autobahn

Some Germans are too busy making high quality firearms (Sig Sauer and Heckler & Koch to name a couple examples).

Thank you, thank you Ice.
I’m actually quite surprised we surpassed the 1 MILLION milestone mark before my wife and I left for Vancouver, which is imminently.

I guess this thread is actually averaging around 1,500 views per day.
Blu-ray.com is a forum example of Ostwald ripening.

I think photo number 9 provides you a nice confluence of interests...
I love it. The universe is now in harmony.
The only Olympic downer is that I heard on the news today that Lindsey has an injury to her tibia.
They’re saying at least it’s muscular rather than being a bone bruise.
The Olympic drama begins.

Looks very interesting - I will have to keep an eye on that site to see if indeed they will have a special screening of LOA in 4k and/or 70mm - after all in 2007 you brought Dr. Strangelove for projection in 4k

Wishful thinking aside I will be waiting to see the finished schedule by the end of March/beginning of April and then I will decide If I want to go or not - I hear that Oslo is beautiful in May...

And to follow up on the secret identity thing: You better not wear your penton cap when I come to Oslo but think about something more like this: or this emoticon might be rendered obsolete:

Source: with pricing goodness

Just saw a wideshot of whistler village, and couldn't help noticing a lack of snow... And, for that matter, a lack of anybody wearing a Penton hat...

Is that what we should be looking for, chief?

Thanks for the word, Slec. Hopefully the new 3D capable Samsung TV sets will receive very positive reviews, although it may be awhile before those TVs can be evaluated for their 3D performance. A 3D TV isn't going to show 3D without the software (Blu-ray 3D movies), the glasses and emitter. So I'll probably still be tempted to wait at least until summer before buying.

As aggressive as electronics companies seem to be with bringing 3D gear to market promptly hopefully that will also mean they'll price the gear at attractive levels too.

With Avatar breaking box office records (at least in monetary terms) I sense electronics companies may see a limited window of opportunity to have 3D TV sets firmly established in the marketplace. In the past 3D movies have come and gone as passing fads in movie theaters. Electronics companies don't want the same happening with regards to full color 3D in home theater systems. With enough good movies in 3D and more 3D movie projects put into future development that could make this latest surge of interest in 3D stick around permanently. I think Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo could do much to make 3D stick around for good in electronics with a supply of 3D games.

I had luck as the German autobahn was only blocked when I got back from the Berlinale so I was in time and could enjoy Metropolis with about 1800 other patrons and I have to see that the biggest impact on me was the big orchestra that accompanied the movie - it was really impressive

It also showed the visual limits of such an approach however as for the orchestra a venue with stadium seating around a ca 150 degree arc had been selected, the Friedrichstadt Palast. That meant that the seating was so drawn out to the sides that the screen was at a very awkward angle for many viewers that would not be considered acceptable in a normal cinema plus there was a lot of additional light in front of the scren and on the screen - the musicians need to see there notes after all and the conductor, too.

Regarding the missing parts they indeed did not draw out but only flesh out the movie and it is hard to believe that back then somebody did think that it would work better without them - good to have them back

The picture quality of the elements that are derived from 35mm material looked pretty good by the way and I would think that people will be happy to get this kind of quality with an eventual Blu-Ray release - actually the projection was digital and in the same resolution that the Blu-Ray will have so I got a pretty good idea now how the Blu-Ray of Metropolis should look.

The parts that came from the 16mm print still looked very bad but as Grover Crisp told me after talking to somebody who worked on Metropolis they had looked much worse before. Hopefully they will have some footage on the Blu-Ray that shows this, it certainly would make for an interesting extra.

So I am happy to have been there - it is always special to enjoy a movie with so many other people but it is so much more impressive when you also have a whole symphonic orchestra that accompanies the presentation.

Sweet, danke for the review... I didn't realize it was a -full- orchestra, no wonder there was so much light spill... Off-angle viewing would have been equally annoying.

Still, it's a downright miracle that the film's in as good shape as it is, and I continue to hope that we'll get a theatrical presentation at TIFF with live musicians, and that the BD includes an appropriately lush score...

So, did you talk to Grover about Sony's plans for the disc?

Yep, the light spill and off-angle viewing is something I usually would not tolerate at all but this was a very special occasion.

And as Kino will come out with the Blu-Ray this year I did not really need to talk to Grover about this release but we talked a bit about other things and especially about a little film matinee I have been planning with a filmclub that I am a member of. Grover has been very helpful there and put in a good word for us with the people who handle those rights over here which has helped a lot.

So here is a big thanks to Grover for helping us out and taking the time to do so - shows that it isn't always about money at the big studios

I hope they recorded this for the Blu-ray, I love live score presentations.

Bugs Bunny on Broadway, if you can ever experience it, do so
