We might be asked to enhance that in 3D if/when the time comes.
On a related note, if you ever watch Top Gear, the Cruise/Diaz episode was fabulous...

Speaking of films to look out for, many on this thread will quite enjoy Animal Kingdom - I described it (facetiously, but amusingly) as the first half of the Godfather meets Goodfellas, set in the near-past of Victoria, Australia.

It won a major award at Sundance, and is well worth checking out. And, yeah, the palate was dull and murky, with some truly stellar ("glossy"? "3D-like"?) performances by the ensemble cast.

One thing about this whole issue on color accuracy....

I'm not referring to anyone in this thread, but it just makes me laugh when some people on the forums will sit and claim how this title or another doesn't have accurate color when they are viewing on a display which has not been fully ISF calibrated by a reputable technician. This should be their number one concern because quite obviously, if your display's color saturation, primaries, and/or grayscale is off, EVERYTHING you ever watch will be off in terms of color. Not to mention, many displays - even perfectly calibrated - still don't produce 100% accurate color. Many have slightly over-saturated primaries which is many cases cannot be corrected. This entire issue, of course, extends to the screenshot science on various LCDs, as well.

Anyway, just wanted to point all of that out. It should be obvious, but many forget.

what are you talking about? I shouldn't need to calibrate my TV, it should just come out of the box, I set it on "VIVID" or "DYNAMIC" (if anything, I crank sharpness a bit) and then forget about it.

Or, better yet, I do the same on my laptop, usually viewing things outdoors with my glossy screen, and like to crank brightness and contrast, and watch on at least a 45 degree off-angle before passing any judgement on PQ.

Vincent's comment in that thread is interesting - again, it's great that Ridley's happy with the new transfer (the benchmark, naturally, for what should be done). However, and admittedly this is only from screenshots, it seems clear that there's a difference in colouration.

So, not sure questioning the change is "nonsense", as it's hardly a kneejerk reaction to the new version.

I guess we can ask Charles (he shows up here once in a while too, I guess) - was this new timing a revision from the original palate, or a better representation of the (preferred) theatrical palate, finally able to shine on this new transfer?

ie., is this director's approved colour timing circa 2010, or 2000? I wouldn't necessarily mind either way, but it's certainly not nonsense to ask that sort of question (while it would, I grant you, be nonsense to continue to suspect somehow this presumed change wasn't done with the explicit intentions of the director of record).

ps. On a semi-related note, good to see that Apocalypse is getting the release it deserves (well, two of them), and that the framing better reflects the theatrical representation, as per our discussion way, way above.

In this case, the Auteur Fight Club had another round, with the DoP "losing" to the Director (at least, that's the way it's being "framed", to use a bad pun...)

If I check in here, I’m compelled to do at least one 3D plug for the day.

"More importantly, this revelation certainly establishes a precedent as to the acceptance by the videophile “enthusiast” community that any color, gamma, or contrast tweaking of a “new master” which is “personally supervised and approved” by the Director is completely kosher even if it is a marked change from the appearance of the original theatrical presentation."

This is not true as the "enthusiast" community was definitely not happy with what Friedkin did to The French Connection blu-ray release.

Hah!...and neither, for that matter, was the DP.
I said “marked change” (at least to the eye of film purists/cinephiles), not extreme revision or reinvention.

hrm. Well, not sure this is going to be productive... Sounds kinda like the stuff Ice didn't want brought up in any of these threads. I do think that the smiley face just might had been an indication that he was joking...

At any rate, VP, did you see this post?

What's your own view on the remaster? I've not seen it, nor probably will I, but I'm curious if you feel that this is a departure from the version that played in theatres.

Thanks, bit not really my favourite large format movie (not a big fan of most musicals) although I am happy for every one of them coming to Blu-Ray.

I would however be extremely curious to hear everything about these two topics/papers:

70mm Projection and 4K Digital Projection: Comparison and Contrast

and

Adventures in 65mm Restoration

So if you could sneak out a paper or two for me as I won't be able to attend...

Seriously, anything you can share please do, I am also sure the Vincent P and Bobby H would be VERY interested.

I guess my original assumption was correct then! Personally speaking, If Ridley's happy with it, so am I.

I did an "on-the-fly" comparison of the two Gladiator discs and the new one is a big improvement. The edge enhancement is completely gone leaving a more film-like image. The improved color saturation really helps too highlighting the great costume design. Purples and reds are much more vivid and flesh tones look lifelike versus the pasty (more like sickly) tones on the original disc.

I’ll see what I can do.

I will be absent from one of the day’s festivities. In regards to your love of large format theatricals, I’m surprised you didn’t mention Andrew Oran, whose on the Speaker List and if memory serves was rubbing shoulders with some of you guys at last year’s Berlinale’s 70mm Retrospective.

Well, it’s good to hear confirmation that your friend John isn’t suffering from some form of color blindness but, I question whether there is as much red push in the 2010 version as was posted on that set of screenshots which OliverK linked to here…several pages back, as I still don’t trust dem screenshots, even for evaluating static things like colors.

Can you run that scene in real time on your calibrated display and see if the color change is as dramatic as it is in that screenshot comparison?
