Haven't seen the film since I was a kid, and still haven't spunn the blu-ray, but I'll take a stab at it.

Just going on the known personality traits of the actors involved, since I can't remember the characters of the film, Steve Harris. He was involved in more than one bar room brawl in his day.

C'mon man! It's bad enough I've started getting mailings from AARP, but to use my name and 'ole geezer' in the same sentence is harsh.

Hey man I just turned 20 this August and last year I got one of those signup cards from AARP with my name on it. I kept it for laughs. I can only imagine it was because I subscribe to Pop Science, Pop Mechanics, Smithsonian, Nat Geo etc.

Unfortunately, I've never seen the film (), and my familiarity with the six primary actors named is lacking. I note the four out of the six had stunt doubles, so I would guess that it might be one of the two that did not: Darren or Baker. Given that Darren was trying to escape his teen idol reputation, I'll guess Darren.

BTW, in case it was not mentioned (I'm just catching up after a several month absense), here's an interesting factoid from IMDB regarding The Guns of Navarone. Not sure as to its veracity.

Quote:
The original 1961 road show release used Technicolor prints made in London, which gave the film eye-popping clarity and disguised many of the imperfections of the sets and special effects. When it came time to turn out mass runs of prints for the general release, Columbia shipped the original negative to a bargain-rate lab in New York, where it was reconfigured for normal Eastmancolor printing. This meant re-cutting the negative to insert standard opticals to approximate the Technicolor process's smooth dissolves, etc. No preservation separations were made and the negative wasn't properly protected. Poor-quality dupe sections were soon patched in to replace damaged pieces of the negative. Eventually two entire reels would have to be replaced in this way, after that New York lab accidentally destroyed the originals through handling errors. Columbia also discarded the film's original sound elements and stereo tracks. A collector's magnetic print was used to recover the original four channel stereo mix.

Well, since it seems that our German-speaking Torsten is not in the clubhouse currently…
https://forum.blu-ray.com/insider-di...ml#post5259210

Does anyone else here understand/speak fluent German? Reason I ask is that it seems it’s becoming quite evident to many that I’m an animal lover, esp. domestic and wild canines. On that note, I was PM’ed this YouTube clip with no explanation whatsoever, other than “Enjoy, do you think it will work?” I have no idea what the point is, as it just seems to me just like a typical commercial for dog food.

Especially confusing to me is one of the top comments which says “Guys, of course it's not gonna work. Youtube's crappy sound compression won't make your tweeters sing at more than 20kHz."

Anyone have any thoughts as to what’s the significance of this clip?

And speaking of PM’s, Kris, someone sent me a PM stating that on some other forum (AVS?) you were ‘praising the Red Epic at the expense of belittling the Sony F65 in the process’.

I doubt that to be true, but just in case you or anyone else has some early reservations about the imaging capability the F65, amongst other things, it sports quite the technical features, such as the only digital camera which records out to 4K using an 8K image sensor (The actual, active 18.3 Megapixel image area is 24.7mm x 13.1 mm, which is 28 mm diagonal). This being the first sensor in the camera industry which will provide a dedicated green photosite for each pixel in the 4K (4096 x 2160) output image. Having a 1 to 1 green photosite to pixel ratio as compared to traditional 4K Bayer pattern sensors enables a significant improvement in image resolution.

That’s a quick tidbit about the resolution of the most ‘True’ 4K digital camera there is and I’ll supply you with Curtis Clark’s thoughts about its color reproduction…

People may ask… well who the hell is Curtis Clark? Fair question, as the article states, “he is the longtime head of the American Society of Cinematographers Technological Committee

... and just one of the reasons it should handily best the Epic (among other competition).

I figure things pretty much go downhill when everyone you meet at commonplace locations like the grocery store, Home Depot, etc. all of a sudden it seems…without having any prior knowledge of your *station* in life, all at once, start addressing you as ‘Sir’ while conversing with you.

I imagine women feel the same way (unless they are in the service and officers) when people begin addressing them as Ma’am.

Well, zee correct answer to the question as to whom stepped forward to volunteer for that scene in ‘Guns’ which we’ve all been discussing, is the actor who actually, as a young man boxed professionally to earn $$ and then studied art and architecture under Frank Lloyd Wright…

I think that IMDB bit of film history was captured from this old comprehensive review of the DVD iteration of ‘Guns’ back in the day….
http://www.dvdtalk.com/dvdsavant/s2272guns.html

Way before my time, but after a very quick perusal, the paragraph in question appears to be pretty much an accurate portrayal of the events. On that note, because of the 4K restoration, if fans are looking to ‘Guns’ as to being some kind of *eye-candy* to show off the prowess of their home theaters to friends and family....look elsewhere.

Yeah, there is a thread that got into 4K speak over on AVS. It started out talking about Red Ray and basically degraded into a few members saying Red was not a serious camera company. I pointed out that Red is getting quite a bit of attention right now from some big players: Fincher, Jackson, Cameron, etc. and I was surprised that some of Sony's biggest upcoming films (Dragon Tattoo, Amazing Spiderman) were being shot with the Red Epic vice the newer Sony. I think I asked you about that earlier in this thread somewhere. Have no issues with the Sony at all, haven't seen any footage with it to be opinionated one way or another. But I have seen enough Red footage to know I like what I see in capable hands and I'm just as excited about seeing the Epic footage as I am the Sony (and the Alexa for that matter).

After cjamescook posted that paragraph from IMDB, I went over there to check out the website…it’s a nice Trivia page with many entries, and one entry which I read, specifically “Some members of the Greek royal family and their entourage were extras in the café scene as they were visiting the set on the day that scene was being filmed” reminded me of an old B&W photo from the set which I have seen in the past.

As described to me, it demonstrates how intense the chess matches among the cast had become. In the foreground, one of the primary filmmakers is speaking to Princesses Irene and Sophia (daughters of the King of Greece) accompanied by two of their naval entourage who are in the far background and looking on intently but, in the very immediate background (like seated right next to one of the Princesses) is Anthony Quinn and Jimmy Darren intently staring at their chess board pieces and completely oblivious to the VIPs visiting on the set.

I’m actually a fan of chess, as it requires you to think several steps ahead of your opponent to be ultimately successful and it is especially rewarding when, at the end, you turn the tables on some aggressor who is totally convinced in his own mind that he has you cornered because of his lack of foresight and overconfidence.

The principal filmmaker aspect of ‘Guns’ is so rich in history (and I’m speaking about political/social history) that it deserves special mention. What I’m talking about is, Carl Foreman (Producer and screenwriter for 'Guns') was blacklisted (unjustifiably in my opinion) by all of the Hollywood studio bosses for not *naming names* to the Congressional House Committee back in the day……

Other than mentioning that you just painfully reminded me of a scene from Pulp Fiction , I’m pretty much at a loss for words.
Moving on.
