And BTW, I completely agree with your man on how HDR has transformed my viewing experience. Some may think he's blowing it out of all proportion, comparing it to the jump from B&W to colour, but I've made similar bold claims as to how much it's impacted upon me: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...t#post15574158

I also agree with him on the AI thing: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...i#post16496646. There are absolutely some areas where it can make inroads but will the day come that a movie will be completely graded by an algorithm? Dunno.
Good someone red the post, he's only one of the best colorists in the world.

Speaking of Netflix, they came up with a "vibrator" app to watch some of their HDR shows.

It doesn't come with a pole.

Here's a funny anecdote our older members, Maverick and the metal pole can relate to. I dug out, dusted off and connected our old Wii tonight. My youngest has never played it. So we played several games of bowling, tennis and baseball. Then I started feeling this pain in my shoulder. I actually threw out my shoulder playing Wii sports. WTF!? Family is still laughing at me. It hurts. Lol. So now I'm going to make a cocktail, retire to my fortress of solitude, lick my wounds and watch something in HDR. #GettingOld

Yeah, these young whipper-snappers don’t realize how good they’ve got it with their virgin bodies and near perfect vision - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...n#post16463278 .

I have a bulging disc in my lower back that sits close to a spinal nerve. Once while in Home Depot I bent over to pick up a bolt I’d dropped on the floor. That action irritated the nerve and I dropped to the floor in SEVERE pain like being shot in the back. Finally got up and walked out stooped waaaay over like a guerilla in order to try to lessen the pain by positioning. Then with some shoppers looking at me like WTF and someone’s dog barking at me as if I was doing something I shouldn’t be doing, added an embarrassment factor to the whole painful incident.

Luckily my wife was with me because it all would have been worse if I had to drive myself home.

P.S.
I left the bolt on the floor.

Netflix is using AI to compress their files from the studio masters. Dolby has plug-ins to generate Atmos tracks from 5.1 tracks. It appears to me anything that will save $$$ will be used.

Lets hope humans continue grade movies but I will not be surprised if DaVinci Resolve 17 or 18 has provisions for “Auto” grading. IMO, a day.

Did they utilize a standardized subjective assessment method like SAMVIQ - https://www.itu.int/dms_pubrec/itu-r...1-I!!PDF-E.pdf to come up with that 30% figure or what?

Did anyone ask at that recent 8K summit?

For meat and potatoes technical stuff I'm not surprised at all, ditto for quick Atmos or HDR upconversions, but the actual creative decisions at source will still come down to what the filmmakers specifically want to see/hear from it, so as long as humans are still making films then the human factor will never be removed completely.

Given that grading is sometimes done by the filmmaker setting a 'look' on a reference frame which the colourist then goes away to match for the whole scene then AI could aid that kind of process, particularly once it learns what X filmmaker likes to see, just as flesh and blood colourists develop a strong working relationship with certain directors or DPs over time, e.g. Stephen Nakamura and Ridley Scott. But even if the colourist is put out of a job by the grading equivalent of HAL 9000 (which will hopefully be slightly less murderous) the director will still be there to guide it.

doubtful,
probably only surgery.....as if I need yet another. So I just deal with it when it occasionally happens (every few years or so when I tweak the spine just a certain way).

Unless they parachute in or something, all the celebs generally walk in from the back of the civic center and use the service elevator. The pole won't fit in said elevator.

For you camera geeks reading, people are rating the Venice at EI 400 with a latitude in the highlights of
