Panasonic Commercializes Transparent OLED Display Module with Superb Image Visibility

Quote:
Panasonic Corporation announced the commercialization of a 55-inch transparent OLED display module that boasts high image visibility, with plans to release it globally, starting from the Japanese and Asia-Oceania markets*1 in the beginning of December 2020.

As the display panel is see-through, objects behind it are still visible allowing a variety of image presentations such as display of images over actual objects in the background. With such a unique feature, the transparent OLED display is attracting a great deal of attention as a next-generation visual display device capable of enhancing the value of spaces.

'World's first' 55-inch AMQLED display developed by BOE

Quote:
China's BOE, the display panel maker, has announced the successful development of a 55-inch electroluminescent AMQLED display with 4K resolution, the first of its kind in the world.

Not to be confused with existing "QLED TVs" that are conventional LCD TVs, BOE's AMQLED is electroluminescent QLED, meaning that clusters of quantum dots, acting as pixels, emit light when an electric current is applied – much like OLED and microLED.

I don't think the 48" panel LG released this year can get that bright. Most reports were around 600nits max.

30inch qd-oled monitors sound like a dream though. Sounds like they're going to be difficult to obtain but it's a step in the right direction at least. PC space hasn't had a proper display for a long time

Decent HDR peak brightness. The LG 48 CX OLED gets bright enough to make small highlights pop in HDR. However, it quickly loses its brightness as larger, bright areas cover the screen due to the very aggressive ABL.

Ah, see I'm talking about a D65 white point on a 10% window. I think rtings is treating the 48CX as a PC Monitor first and foremost and tested HDR for game mode.

Vincent has tested the 48" LG panels in the CX and A9S and says they come out a little more dim than contemporaries. Here's a link

According to FOMO's video, burn-in is still a possible with QD-OLED.

Supply Chain of LG Display’s “Transparent OLED” Expands Continuously
https://english.etnews.com/20201123200001

Panasonic announced that it would begin selling 55-inch transparent OLED modules in Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, Australia, and New Zealand starting from this year. This OLED module is based on LG Display’s transparent OLED panel and is less than one centimeters in thickness.“Panasonic’s module was developed to target B2B (Business to Business) digital signage market in its native country and the Asia-Pacific market.” said one industry official. “LG Display supplied transparent OLED panels that are the key to the module.”

While in unit terms Advanced LCD fared better than OLED, in revenue terms the reverse was true. OLED TV revenues increased by 39% Y/Y in Q3, while Advanced LCD TV revenues increased by only 27%. As a result, OLED’s revenue share of Advanced TV increased to 39% in Q3 compared to 37% a year ago even while unit share decreased from 30% in Q3 2019 to 27% in the most recent quarter.

OLED doesn't look that drab in person, no way. The QD screen also shows blown whites and a lack of any nuance.

I just don't think such images are helpful at all, they don't show any screen particularly well. It probably illustrates more the limitations of cameras and SDR photo display rather than the TVs themselves.
