Very informative Robert, seems like a good year to buy a TV. I differ though as to your thinking about the HVS at ~ 26:15 timestamp in conversation with the FOMO.

When illumination is higher, pupils constrict and peripheral portions of the refractile elements are excluded from the optical pathway. The result being fewer aberrations are encountered by image forming light rays, and the image on the retina becomes sharper. Additionally, bright images allow for photopic vision of the retina which provides capability for seeing color and resolving much finer detail than that of scotopic (low illuminated) vision. Cones shut down at ~ 0.003.

It’s a known fact that if you increase the stimulus strength during a visual field test, people will be drawn more to/and be more comfortable with the brighter stimulus dots in a perimetry dome, which is analogous to highlights with HDR video displays. Dolby viewer preference study showed that blacks asymptote around between 0.01 – 0.001 which was actually already achieved by the Sharp Elite PRO-X5FD LED TV back in the day -



With regards to blacks, 90% of observers were happy with not even ten to the negative three nits (three orders of magnitude), whereas it took MORE than three orders of magnitude on the plus side for 90% of observers to be happy with white stimuli and even more than four orders (10,000 nits) for 90% of observers to be satisfied with highlights. Brightness is at least equal to and probably of more importance than darkness in regards to viewer preference, whether or not videophiles realize it.

Amazon is reportedly planning to launch its own TVs

Amazon could launch its own Amazon-branded TVs, ranging from 55 to 75 inches, as early as October in the US, according to a report by Business Insider.

The TVs will be designed and manufactured by third parties, likely China's TCL. In addition, Amazon is designing a separate TV in-house, the report said.

Nanotech OLED electrode liberates 20% more light, could slash display power consumption

A new electrode that could free up 20% more light from organic light-emitting diodes has been developed at the University of Michigan. It could help extend the battery life of smartphones and laptops, or make next-gen televisions and displays much more energy efficient.

The approach prevents light from being trapped in the light-emitting part of an OLED, enabling OLEDs to maintain brightness while using less power. In addition, the electrode is easy to fit into existing processes for making OLED displays and light fixtures.

The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA®) announced that it has added a new 600 performance level to its DisplayHDR True Black high dynamic range (HDR) specification and standard. Based on VESA's widely adopted High-Performance Monitor and Display Compliance Test Specification (DisplayHDR), the DisplayHDR True Black standard is optimized for emissive display technologies, such as organic light emitting diode (OLED) and future microLED displays.

The new DisplayHDR True Black 600 tier offers higher luminance than the existing DisplayHDR and DisplayHDR True Black 400 and 500 tiers. DisplayHDR and DisplayHDR True Black are the display industry's first fully open standards specifying HDR quality for LCD and emissive displays, respectively.
