When this was discussed years ago I remember hearing that Lionsgate was aware of the problems with those initial films and corrected the issue. One would assume that unless you somehow manage to get a sealed copy from 2007/2008 that the issue was corrected in subsequent pressings, regardless if the same facility was used or not. If I remember correctly, the thought was that since the Blu Ray format was still so new, there were production issues with the glue used between layers during these initial print runs. The problem was identified in 2007/2008 and corrected. More troubling recently has been Lionsgate's use of BD-Java and the BD-Live content. In many cases, turning off the internet connection to the player will solve problems where the disc locks up or hangs during loading. I own a large amount of Lionsgate titles and typically check them each year after someone brings the issue back up. To this day I've still only had one title fail on me.. an original pressing of the first Saw film. There are always going to be bad batches of discs, however typically when people have problems it's with the first 10 titles Lionsgate issued (with the occasional newer release cropping up occasionally.)

I think a more inclusive title is warranted for this thread
Also a reformat.. (makes it easier to read at a glance) below is my suggestion / applied to each studio Fox/MGM BDs: - Die Hard 2 - (missing DTS-HD MA track; Fox just sent out the same bad disc as a "replacement"); - Sunshine - (video commentary can't be turned off; replacement available); - Speed - (compatibility issues with some Samsung players); - West Side Story - (all versions affected; opening credits are altered; replacement discs are still incorrect; Fox did not replace the DVDs in combo sets); - X-Men: Days of Future Past Rogue Cut - (audio problems due to branching technology; no replacement/exchange program yet; call Fox to complain) |

I noticed you included old discs that were packaged in new releases (Example: The Fifth Element), so here's one to add to the list...
MGM: The Terminator (2015 Comic Con Packaging/Best Buy Exclusive) - It includes the 2006 release and not the re-mastered disc. |

![]() The old Fifth Element disc was supposed to be taken off the marketplace entirely. MGM/Fox are still selling the old Terminator disc. It's an active SKU. |

I just bought Repulsion in the B&N sale. I didn't think about it being an older release. It's First Printing 2009. I have not opened it yet. I'm wondering if I should return it. Is it possible that Criterion has produced a newer batch of the bad titles since 2009/2010?

Just a heads up. Heard from Criterion today about replacement Sanjuro discs. They got them in last week and will start shipping replacements out this week. So if you're waiting for a Sanjuro replacement, you should have it shortly.

A gigantic error is present on Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie (Lionsgate)'s bonus features: On all SD material, the encode is terribly messed up, squishing the picture into a small area in the top-left corner of the screen.

I just got my Criterion Paris, Texas.
On the back cover it says "First Printing 2009", but in the disc the code is IFPI L322. So, since I have this code I guess it's one of the unaffected discs as I saw here? (although the "first pressing" worried me a bit) |

It seems counter-intuitive, but when it comes to Criterion, "first pressing" only changes to "second pressing" when they actually make mastering or encoding changes to the file on the disc, not when when have the same encoding re-pressed.

Torrente, do you have any news about the extensive French disc rot problem?
Can the problem with the French discs be categorized like this?: If the glue in the middle of the disc is brown, then the disc will become unplayable. If the glue in the middle of the disc is white, then the disc is healthy. |

I've seen discs from multiple countries with brownish glue in the center, so I certainly do not believe that statement to be true. |

THANK GOD FOR THIS THREAD. After stumbling upon it, I went and checked the only Criterion release my family owns (Paris, Texas) and indeed it was all bronzed up. Mailing it asap for a replacement.
EDIT: For the record, I bought the movie only last year. Last edited by Oniros; 09-10-2015 at 07:59 PM. |
