I applaud Criterion for their quick acknowledgement of the issue and a possible program to replace defective discs.

Based on their email, there is no way to be sure, they certainly did not say that, but also didn't say the replacement would be the same film

For the record, I've recently played both my Pierot le Fou and 8 1/2 disks including special features with no issues.

I visually inspected Seventh Seal, Kagemusha, Repulsion, Howard's End, Days of Heaven and M among others and saw no evidence of bronzing or pealing on any of them. The issue still worries me though, and maybe I won't be so lucky in the future. That said, perhaps there is a regional link to who received disks from what distributor? I'm from the north-east with all the disks purchased from either Barnes and Noble or Amazon.

Check your discs to see if you can see any alphanumeric codes starting with L0 or LB, as stated in the OP. If yes, then the discs came from a factory that created most of the faulty discs.

Not unless Criterion changed the disc master, as they do for instances when there's an authoring error (Carlos, Eraserhead, White, etc.).

-They are however already actively doing research into this problem and will then come up with a way for them to deal with it.

-She assured me that everyone with defective discs will receive replacements. It may take time, but they will take care of every single customer.

-The only exception to this is, unfortunately, for people with OOP discs. They have absolutely no stock of any of the OOP titles anymore, and they have no options to print additional copies for replacements. They will offer some sort of solution for those people though, which may be another Criterion title of your choice to replace it.

-She told me to remove all of my damaged discs and to put a sticky note on each and every one of them giving exact details of the problems that they are having. I am then to take the discs, and only the discs, and mail them to the address that she gave me.

-They do NOT want people to just randomly start mailing discs to them.

-They are going to deal with this on a case by case basis. Once you hear from them, have it be on the phone or in email, they will then instruct you exactly what to do as they did for me just now.

-They are aware that they have had issues with some of these titles in the past such as M and Walkabout. However, if you have bronzing and that sort of thing, this is a completely different and separate problem and they recognize it as such.

-I'm going to add one more thing to my list, which explains why they have yet to make a public statement on this issue...

-She told me that they are hesitant to publicly say anything yet, other than on a case by case basis, because they have yet to complete their research into the problem. They do not know the exact case of the issues as of this time, but they are currently looking into it. Unless, or until, they can narrow things down to where they can say exactly what the issue is, they will be dealing with this on a case by case basis as they have almost always done in the past. Long story short - if you have a defective disc, it will get replaced, and if they do discover the exact problem, they will release a public explanation at that time.

-They will be responding to each and every email soon. They have simply been slammed and that, mixed with Eraserhead, they are behind way more than ever before. Be patient, and they will take care of all of us.

Similar problem as some Criterions from 2009-2010.

The date range for these appears to be April 2010 to October 2011.

Look for alphanumeric codes IFPI L606 (both) Mould IC0Z or 1C0Z.

Me too. Good news, since I tried to watch it last night and I was bummed that it's OOP and I won't be able to see the 15 minutes that froze up near the end of the movie. I'll send in my toasted Walkabout as well.

I've only had the chance to buzz through IP Man and it didn't hang. I don't have the ability to scan them on the PC. I did send an e-mail to Well Go USA describing the issue and asking about known problems/replacements.

Hmm...interesting. They've identified 7 of the 18 titles that have been reported as being problematic in this thread (see first post of this thread).

Also, 2 of the 7 titles they have identified as being faulty are OOP titles and they are able to replace them. Would be interesting to read more about how that works.

Finally, I assume if someone were to contact Criterion directly about one or more of the other 11 non-identified titles they would be willing to replace those as well?

Glad to see they posted that. Odd that they don't have Stagecoach listed, as that one is bronzing for me. Wonder if I should just send it in with the rest..

EDIT: Are there certain moments during M and Paris, Texas that skip/stop playing?
