I took a look at my copy of In the Realm of the Senses, which was another very early purchase in my collection, years back. Although I did not test it in my player, there are no discernable signs of discoloration on my copy. It looks like I got lucky with that one.

It looks like tomorrow I'll be going through each and every one of my Criterion discs form this time period and testing them all in my players. UGH.

I probably should not have posted In the Realm of the Senses, yes it has a bronze color but it does play. This forum seems to have become a runaway train. It should not be counted as defective at this time.

And I have not added it to the OP.

I'll probably just play the OOP ones in the upcoming weeks. With the Warner HD DVD rot, I just got depressed seeing a failure rate of about 60%. I gave up eventually.

FWIW, I don't see anything wrong in posting ITROTS. Just because your bronzed copy works, doesn't mean that other bronzed copies out there also work fine. If anything, it gives others notice to check out their copies.

I will add it to the OP if one person has a bad copy. Otherwise, it's just speculation at this point.

Feel free to add my post about Gomorrah to the OP if you want as well.

I'll let you all know what I discover tomorrow.

Well, my Summer Hours and Pierrot Le Fou are starting the dreaded bronze ring on the outer edge.

The first one I checked was my OOP Third Man, luckily its fine.

darn Criterion and they're Flexplay and Divx discs, GRRRR!

Oh, I did already.

You're not the only one with a Gomorrah that won't play. Someone else reported it as well a few posts back.

I have all of these and am quite concerned. Of course, I'm most concerned about the OOP titles. All of my movies are packed away right now due to a move, so it will be a little bit before I can check. Fingers crossed.

If its guaranteed to never rot and outlive me I dont care if its a "fancy BD-R". I dont see how that matters.

Well I guess I'm saying that I don't believe their guarantee.

I'd absolutely concur with this, although I do generally use this method to check discs quickly sometimes. I did have an inexpensive Mill Creek release with a visible nick seemingly below the protective layer - it caused the disc to skip at a very specific point, though the scene could absolutely be fast forwarded through reliably without any issues. A replacement disc solved the issue in this particular case.

The only one I have from that list is "M". It's def first printing. Says it on back. Picked it up a year after its release in May '11. No discoloration whatsoever. So should I still play the disc to see if it's faulty?

I also have the same Stagecoach as well as an original-release Third Man (in the cardboard container) and Fellini's 8 and a Half. All look and play just fine with NO sign of deterioration.
Not taking a stand. Just reporting on what I have and see.

Might not be a bad idea. Brent L.'s copy of Gomorrah does not have discoloration but is not playing.

Someone has a copy of Stagecoach which plays fine except for one of the Bonus Features. It's not the main movie, but still.

This is a nightmare. How in the world are we ever going to sort all of this out?

There is no way to 100% confirm that a disc is undamaged besides scanning the disc in a computer. There is no other way to guarantee that you're hitting every sector of data on the disc.

Maybe that is a technicality for most here - perhaps playing back the movie without freezing or skipping is enough for one to be happy with the quality of the disc. However, I am interested in truly knowing if my discs are affected or not, and I will be scanning each disc in my computer as soon as I hook up a BD-ROM drive.

How do you do that exactly?

It says so on the fine print on the back cover.

I don't have any of the titles affected, but I just checked and every single one of my Criterions is a "first printing".
