true dat... like I said when this broke out, it was only a matter of time before we found other companies with this issue, because I guarantee you that LB42 plant didn't JUST print those 10 or so titles for Criterion, they were most likely printing for every major out there at one time or another over those 2 years....

it'll just be a lot more hit and miss as the majors use half a dozen or so printing facilities AT ONCE for a title because of the quantity. so we'll have a handful here and there rotting while a good chunk of the others won't be affected.

I've also heard that the BD-Java software can cause all sorts of bugs which has been confirmed by several users. In this case the best I can say is to ensure your players firmware is up to date, and if it is, to try turning off the network connection as sometimes that can cause issues with loading as well.
My player doesn't have wi-fi, so I know it has nothing to do with that. This also means I can't update firmware and I think I don't have BD-Java either.

Does it have an Ethernet port? If not, you should still be able to update the firmware on your player with a USB thumb drive. What make and model player do you have?

Nope, there is no way to get Internet on my player. I have an LG, I don'the know the exact model. My player does have a USB port, but how do I get that version of the update.

Model number should be listed on a sticker (or printed) on the back of the player. You'll need that to determine whether a more current version of the firmware exists since firmware is player specific.

What's crazy is that The Big Lebowski was released on 08/16/2011, more than a year after the bad batch of Criterions.

which means that pressing plant may have had bad discs going on for YEARS... something that they were doing probably raised a red flag with Criterion and they left, but the plant probably didn't fix it for quite a while

Last firmware update was on 09/23/2011 and 10/06/2011. You can find the latest firmware and instructions on how to install it, if necessary, at this site:

http://www.lg.com/us/support-product/lg-BD610

It appears you can also burn a CD/DVD with the firmware and install it that way as well.

As an update to my Big Lebowski post, I have gone through all of my blu ray collection, and it is only the Big Lebowski disc that has bronzed. Luckily I don't have a huge collection, it only took me an hour to do.

As previously stated by others, it seems like this is a pretty isolated case of specific discs. I am personally glad it's only two or so discs that have this issue.

If only we had some insider info into which companies used Arvato for which discs at that given time period 2010-2011, then we could narrow down which copies have the possibility of being affected.

Last edited by Animatic33; 10-19-2014 at 03:34 PM. Reason: Removed my non-affected IFPI codes in case of future confusion. Most/All my discs are fine.

I did learn a good chunk of my discs had 78 or 79 at the end of the IFPI barcode.

Many Criterions from 2009 and 2010 were affected. The Big Lebowski was released in 2011, so who knows what else is going to go bad? At the very least we know that Universal also used that facility.

I had started the original Summer Hours thread but I didn't get a chance to go through the rest of my collection to see what discs were potentially affected. I finally looked through all the titles in the affected period to check their IFPI codes and to scan (using VSO Inspector) any titles that may be suspect. Here's the outcome

The Wages of Fear L321
The Seventh Seal L324
Last Year at Marienbad L322
Repulsion L324
Kagemusha L323
Pierrot le fou 10K6 GOOD
Wings of Desire L323
Gomorrah 10K6 GOOD
A Christmas Tale 10K6 GOOD
8 1/2 L323
Paris, Texas L323
Revanche 10K6 GOOD
Lola Montes L324
Hunger L324
Yojimbo L324
Sanjuro L325
Days of Heaven L322
Bigger Than Life 10K7 GOOD
Vivre sa vie 10K6 GOOD
Summer Hours 10K7 BAD
M L324
Walkabout L322
Stagecoach L325
Close-up L325
Red Desert L323

I scanned only the discs with IFPI codes of 10K6 and 10K7 - has anyone seen problems with any of the discs with IFPI codes of L3* ?

Are there any specific batches of discs with IFPI codes of 10K6 and 10K7 that are bad ? If you have such a disc are you pre-emptively sending the disc in for replacement (even if it plays fine at the moment).

Only Summer Hours has an obvious problem in my case. There is some light bronzing and playback issues halfway through the movie.

One of my WellGo titles (The Man from Nowhere) played fine before but seems heavily bronzed now and gives me errors when I scan it using VSO Inspector.

You're lucky, then, as some people have 10-plus bad discs.

I have 5 others that may potentially go bad in the future but yes, I was expecting much worse. I was a holdout for a long time - not willing to jump on the BluRay bandwagon. It was only in early 2013 that I decided to take the plunge and upgrade everything I had on DVD plus buy new releases (which I did over 3 BN sales). This may have helped because in the case of a lot of the affected titles I didn't get the first batch that turned out to be bad.

Corpses still doesn't work, back to Wal-Mart I go. Thanks for your help though, I probably still needed that update.

However, not sure if you guys are aware of a completely separate issue with Howard's End... where the movie skips at the 1:52 mark (one hour, 52 min), and jumps back to about 2:10 or so. Completely unrelated issue, though. Mine suffers from this playback problem, unfortunately.
Any reason about this? My disc just started doing this tonight, and there's some slight bronzing on it. I've watched the disc a total of 4x, counting tonight, since I bought it in 2011, and this is the first time it's done this. I'm going to test it in my HTPC, because it skipped in my Panasonic DMP BD-65 player. Frustrated, because I've used that player in the past with no issues.
