An article on broadcast HDR was just released and it sounds like a lot of things will be decided this October

Any current releases have branching?
What's the longest movie released or announced for UHD? Any of the "largest size" discs been produced? Will really long movies like Spartacus be a problem for the format? Thanks to anyone who knows any of these questions. |

Bolty, I was wondering the same thing about Lawrence of Arabia just today when I was adding it to my site. Amazon has the movie in their UHD collection. The cut of Lawrence of Arabia that they have is 3 hours and 47 minutes. Even with HEVC, I am assuming since we don't have the triple layer discs out yet that LoA would be a 'flipper' if it was released now.

The current Japanese Mi4K Blu-ray version of Lawrence is split over two discs for optimal quality, if we were to get a UHD release now I think it would also be split over two discs. Sony have previously indicated that they're further along with 100GB disc replication than other companies, but using two 66GB discs would be a total of 132GB which would give the movie more room to groove. The movie can be split naturally at the intermission, after all...

![]() ![]() Regarding the HDR timeline and the ITU, kudos to all those who’ve volunteered their time and expertise as it’s been a long, arduous journey where patience is indeed a virtue. For the historical record, and to expand a little upon the author’s comment - “ITU-R has been discussing HDR for over two years, with a new recommendation finally agreed in February” ….. Actually, the initial submission leading to the discussion of high dynamic range as an upgrade to traditional television dynamic range parameter arose in ITU-R on a proposal in April 2012 from the United States ![]() P.S. Forum Promo: For that matter, Blu-ray.com has been accurately discussing for longer than 2 years, the next gen video parameter of HDR anchored by specifics from developers in the field, rather than simply with anecdotal or marketing dept. generalizations. Something else that new readers to this or the other sticky threads in the Ultra HD Blu-ray and 4K forum perhaps may be unaware of with regards to all these standards organizations is that it’s not like no work is being done until the next meeting (October) and then everyone all of a sudden shows up to vote in person or via remote access to decide on some issue at that time. Tests are conducted in between meetings all the time. For example, starting in several days at labs in Sweden and Rome, the current state-of-the-art HEVC Main 10 coding of HDR vs. the HDR Call for Evidence cc from the version 1.0 anchors….will be compared in subjective testing. So, in the interim of formal meetings which the press hears about eventually, investigators devote a lot of time and effort into testing under scientific conditions/methodology (example in the above alluded to project, all viewers will have prior specific formalized training for assessing the quality of the content and are pre-screened to check visual acuity (Snellen chart, etc.) and even for partial color blindness (Ishihara tables), just for starters. |

With regards to SMPTE standards, a full quarterly report for Feb.- March of the latest block meetings has at this moment not been posted on the official site, with Dec. 2015 being the last available for public access….
![]() from https://www.smpte.org/standards/meeting-reports But, the Feb. – March report should be up soon. In the meantime I can inform folks that roughly 60 members attended in person during this latest 4 day meeting round up in Silicon Valley and there was additional participation by remote access. With regards to HDR/WCG, a project proposal was introduced for signaling the carriage of HDR and/or WCG essence on interfaces. The project is expected to be underway by the next meeting round. In regards to the ST.2094 document suite (think Content-Dependent Metadata for Color Volume Transformation of High Luminance and Wide Color Gamut (WCG) Images, or Geoff’s fav), well, five of these parts have been balloted and are in the process of comment resolution. It’s possible for more parts to be added if any new proponents have dynamic metadata processes they wish to standardize. Any takers? |
