Default Setup Disc

Does anyone know of a setup disc that has specific black level and contrast adjustments for DLP TV's? I have the old Avia and Video Essentials, but was wondering what the advantage of Digital Video Essentials would be over the older version and if it has specific test paterns for black level and contrast.

Also, my Mits. has seperate color and tint adjustments for red, green, blue, yellow, cyan, and magenta, along with the standard tint and color controls. Any discs have patterns and filters to calibrate the 6 seperate color/tint controls?

So, I've been doing some digging and talking on the phone with several people. It appears that the setup discs (Avia and DVE) do not work (tint/color) for a DLP. Best bet is to have a tech come in and calibrate the user and service controls.

Question dvd/bd for calibrating your set

Any suggestions on a tool for calibrating your tv to a particular room in terms of the lighting and such? Just want to get the best picture out of my current set and hopefully a SXRD model in a few months.

Or is there a site that you can put in your model number and they will give you suggestions on what to do in terms of gray scale/lighting, what settings you should screw around with and such?

It's different for every person. Best thing is moderate lightning, and just experiment with the settings.
Personal tweaking is the best... Always has been.

I figure it's just a matter of time before we see a "Digital Video Essentials" and/or Avia versions for the new HD formats.

I see on amazon they have one coming out for hd dvd. I really don't want to have to pay someone to come out and calibrate my set for me, so keeping in mind that I'm sort of a novice when it comes to adjusting settings I see avia has an hd dvd coming out from amazon http://www.amazon.com/o/ASIN/B000IHY...057715-5007143

Would it be wise to get this to calibrate my current Sony 1080i tv through the hd dvd add on for the 360 and later on for an SXRD?

You'll need someone to come and adjust your set, if you want the gray to be correct. Unless you buy a spider and get the code to access your TV's service menu.

I could give you a long Decipost about this but i'm kind of Decibusy

paint the ceiling and floor and all the room walls facing the display black! the one behind it true grey or white

level 16 should be true black if the people mastering the disc knew stuff.

and 10,000 words more that I may write later

Your best bet is to get an ISF tech to calibrate your set. After that, there is nothing to worry about.

These guys make Digital Video Essentials. I emailed to see if they were going to release a BD version. I'd suggest others do the same, start a campaign.

Problem is Joe Kane (the producer of DVE) is a long time paid consultant of Toshiba.

I haven't heard much from Joe since his rediculous anti-MPEG-2 statements last June. I do know DVE was delayed because it wouldn't work in the A2 despite working fine in the A1.

I hated to say it but ol' Joe definitely took some serious credibility hits in my eyes with some of those comments you are referring to.

Absolutely. It's as if he was taking a page from the Amir playbook. Create anti-BD propaganda by making some outlandish conclusion based on the situation as if he were a total noobie, and then let his reputation sell the statement.

Geez, he put out DTheater tapes. He knows what CBR MPEG-2 can do. And he's making fanboy-like conclusions based on a few releases at BD launch. Absolutely unforgiveable for someone of his stature.

I'm curious about the Avia BD also. This is the first I've heard anything about it. Any info?

The Avia discs have test patterns and tones, so you can calibrate your display/home theater/sound system.

Besides the regular color bars you see on some DVDs and tv, it has much more advanced patterns and images.

You use it to set black level (brigthness), whitle level (contrast), saturation (color) adjust the sharpness settings, check for overscan (check if part of the image is missing and how much, on your display) and if you have instruments, set grey levels (color temperature) and other nifty stuff. If you follow the standards you'll get your display to look as close as possible to the way the displays are set where they do the film transfers.

Well at least that's the theory. I sometimes wonder where do they set their black level
