odd. I've watched a ton of 4K content on Netflix and Amazon Prime, and also streamed Youtube 4K content from my PC and never noticed anything like that.

Maybe you have keener eyes than me?

I'm not sure why you would think that. Plenty of movie theaters in the US advertise 4K projection, yet many of the movies are being played from 2K DCPs. No one complains about it.

... except for a handful of malcontents on the web.

4K is not usually offered as a premium format at movie theaters. Nor is anything claimed implictly or explicitly about the resolution for a given film.

It is in the UK, I have seen both 4in projection and 4k on a set and both look great

I'm surprised... The only premium exhibition formats in my area are Cinemark XD, AMC ETX, and IMAX (soon to be laser). None of those says anything about 4K specifically in their marketing materials.

AMC ETX uses 4K projection and Dolby Atmos sound. Recently they've been upgrading them to Dolby Cinema with 4K Laser.

I believe Cinemark XD has similar specs.

“The criteria mainly are peak brightness, contrast, 10-bit depth and the colour gamut but if you combine these parameters you’re also basically addressing a much bigger concern which is called 'colour volume'……So it’s a three dimensional thing combining a two-dimensional colour gamut and the third dimension which is brightness and contrast.”

For new readers to the concept mentioned above ^ by Hanno, and those with a greater than 8 sec. attention span, this was first explained (by ‘first’, I mean before any other consumer audio video forum/website on the internet) and illustrated here

.....“There’s a number of questions that are open right now, so we’re talking to a number of broadcasters in Europe as well as in the US and elsewhere, to invite them in to start that discussion.”

With the leading answer , so far at this point in time, being summed up with a new acronym

same here. I've taken to asking the Alamo Drafthouse on twitter if a movie is using the 4K DCP.

I'm actually working with an acquaintance of mine who runs the site The Projection List to see about adding an icon next to films that are getting a 4K DCP.

right now it's damned hard to sort out which movies have true 4K sent to the theater.

Samsung had an actual disc playing in their UHD player at IBC.

Perhaps it was just a basic transport stream burned onto a disc rather than a properly authored platter?

That be a discussion for another day…..on down the HDR highway.

For the time being, sort of think of it like this….OETF+ EOTF = OOTF in trying to deliver the best live HDR from acquisition to home display.
