heavily dependent on the quality of the active local dimming in the panel.

the LG tvs have really good local dimming for edge lit tvs.

I was looking at Samsung. Think Il'll wait till 4K Blu Ray kicks off so the Panel and player will be cheeper.

Same here. I love my Sony 4K LCD. I still have the (Panny) plasmas in other rooms though.

I still have a 2010 50" Panny Plasma G25 going strong but I know one day it'll die and it won't be worth fixing. I'll hop on the 4K TV bandwagon then. (not sure between LCD vs. LED vs. OLED since I haven't done research)

Most plasma owners will move to OLED. They consider LCD an expletive.

The UHD Alliance should not ignore OLED technology nor relegate OLED displays to a non premium category for its decal, simply because it does not reach 1000+ cd/m2.
LCD TVs dominate the 4K market . OLED has probably less than a 1 percent share. I don't see what there is to disagree with. Why wouldn't most testing be done with LCD?

the Samsungs are really good once you get above their entry level.

They've made a few panels that were "store exclusives" for Best Buy that were not very good.

If I were buying a Sammy I would make sure it was 7000 series or higher

Yeah, every time I pop into currys to check them out the Samsung always look the best for some reason. Is it still right that minimum size should be 65"?

I'll vouch for this statement. My mother has a 7100 series. 3D, nice features, very nice picture quality. I still like my Sony XBR 65 X850C better though.

eh, totally depends on your preference.

I have a 55" and it's great. "Screen size" charts are bollocks, but we've gone over that a billion times on this board already.

Get what size looks good to you.

The Samsung 8500 SUHD and higher model displays definitely have the 10 bit panels necessary for UHD Blu-ray, though. Not sure about their 7000 series.

I was in the store with them side-by-side and it was a very hard decision to make. Ended up with the LG mainly because I was able to get one 2 model levels higher for the same price because it was a floor model. If I were looking at a straight up new to new, same price, decision I would probably go with the Sony.

No.
But there were other challenges involved….

J/K folks.

I agree with your lack of disagreement, plus, I think Geoff’s point was simply that there will be more HDR-capable LCD tv brand/models available for consumers to choose from as compared to HDR OLED tvs.

For instance, with regards to another assessment get-together there was to subjectively evaluate HDR video quality, but in this case not involving consumers, but rather, filmmakers and a wide collection of other industry professionals last May at the Clubhouse (http://www.theasc.com/ac_society/index.php), when you don’t count the ultra-expensive Pro model Sony BVM-X300 which was present in the group of contending HDR monitors submitted by leading manufacturers for evaluation by experts…..

the remaining HDR exhibiting displays (all showing the same high quality HDR graded material produced to specifically leverage the extended dynamic range of HDR) consisted of…..

5 LCDs as opposed to only 1 OLED.

Although optional, the Digital Bridge is the only element of Ultra HD Blu-ray that offers the consumer convenience over the currently available BD format, since Ultraviolet is not that convenient with the need for a redemption code. And the ability to copy UHD BR bit for bit to a HDD is an added benefit.

My impression is that Fox and Samsung are the only ones pushing this at the moment. Seems odd that DTS would make a presentation about the Digital Bridge.

I'm thinking the bit for bit Digital Bridge copy of UHD discs will be used by the studios about as much as Managed Copy for Blu-ray.

It's all talk and little action.

And not much talk yet. The BDA says they will have a webinar on the digital bridge later this year.

Here are some positive comments from MESA members:

[Greg] Johnson also praised 4K Blu-ray’s “digital bridge” feature, which aims to offer a 4K-resolution digital version of the content consumers would buy on discs.

“In general, we see this as a technology that’s very similar to [Blu-ray’s] Managed Copy, with media output similar to CFF [Common File Format],” he said. “Consumers will enjoy Blu-ray quality streams, something they don’t get right now.

“Managed Copy was held back by the need to transcode content on the disc, and that’s a real burden for the players. With digital bridge, there’s no transcoding involved.”

Ramón Bretón, CTO at Culver City, Calif.-based quality control company 3rd i QC, said two of its biggest clients, one on the physical disc side, one on the OTT side, are both committed to 4K/UHD, as well as HDR. And the addition of UHD Blu-ray is creating some unique testing hurdles.

“Out of what has been announced so far, the ‘digital bridge’ presents the most unique challenge,” he said. “We currently do extensive digital copy and digital redemption testing on a variety of devices including computers, tablets and phones, so when approaching testing of the digital bridge on Ultra HD Blu-ray, we already have a strong starting point.

“The ability to transfer a movie or television show from the Ultra HD Blu-ray to a mobile device is an extremely smart feature of the Ultra HD Blu-ray, and I commend the BDA for including it.”

There's also been talk that it's a 1080p copy, possibly compressed further, and not a direct disc rip replete with full UHD video and lossless audio.

will enable you to watch CP with more clarity. (currently, when the players come out prior to kick-off at Selhurst Park, the camera pans too quickly for my taste (causing blur) for when they go past your cheerleaders).

Plus, to this day, I still haven’t seen a good image of your eagle.

There's no HDR when I'm sitting in the stands, at certain times of the year the sun gets real low and I can barely see the action for the sun in my eyes, never mind the eagle!
