EVP of football operations Troy Vincent said the league is not looking to get rid of the kickoff, but they hoping to modify it.

Vincent said those modifications could be in place in time for the 2018 season. The specifics will be ironed out during the two-day safety summit this week at NFL headquarters -- the new helmet rule will be discussed on Tuesday followed by kickoffs on Wednesday. Vincent said he does not want to turn the kickoff into a ceremonial play, but there are still too many dangerous hits even on kicks which result in touchbacks.

Kickoffs now are a waste anyways
most the time they get tackled before the 25 or get a penalty
just stay in the endzone & take it at the 25.

I disagree completely...with kick offs, there's always a chance for a big/explosive play that can get a team and crowd back into a game.

I remember seeing Percy Harvin run back that 100 yarder against Dallas when I went to a Minnesota game. You could just feel the entire game shifting to the Vikings.

Theres a plus & minus to almost everything & in running it back the minuses far outweigh the pluses.

Thats why belechick likes the kick to go to 5 yrd line so the other team has to return it.

In my opinion, in recent years, I've seen far more injuries happening on passes over the middle and its in the trenches than I have seen on kick offs.

Two-hand touch on kickoffs and punts, you heard it here first.

Funny you mention that, last night when I saw this story I was thinking that we may not be that far off from that.
It seems like 9/10 kickoffs are touchbacks anyway so as much as we like them as fans I think the writing is on the wall that these will be eliminated sometime in the near future. I just don't know how else they can be modified without just doing away with them all together.
A lot of the injuries aren't necessarily on the returner himself but happen away from the ball, on the insane blocks and collisions with blockers.

Edit - I just read that NE was looking at the possibility of moving up to the #2 spot to draft Mayfield last week. Just seems weird to me as he just doesn't seem like a NE/Belichick type player. Weird

The cost for the Patriots to move up to #2 would have been astronomical. They would have had to give up both their #1 picks, a #1 next year, and multiple #2 picks. I just can't see them giving up that much for any player. It'd be one thing if they were rebuilding and going for a Peyton Manning/Andrew Luck type that was considered a can't miss prospect but they're still a championship contender.

Right but just in general it doesn't seem like a Belichick/NE move.

It would have been from the standpoint that they could've effed the NYJ out of a QB AND done so with the NYJ crosstown rival, the NYG. Bellicheat would have savored that one. Regardless the NYJ would have gotten a QB (Rosen) just not the one they coveted.

Patriots aren't the draft day juggernaut they used to be. Excluding this year, since it's way too early to have a true opinion on anyone's draft, Belichick has not drafted well in recent years.

He has drafted tons of starters in the last few years.

Very happy with Philly’s draft. Was glad to see them trade out of the first round and it should be interesting to see how Guice works out for Washington, after Philly passed on him...twice.
Also very happy for see Sproles back!

David Akers absolutely stole the draft.
Philly jumps over Dallas to take Dallas Goedert, in Dallas, as news of Witten retiring hits. Epic!
Ertz and Goedert could be a matachup nightmare for one of the league top offenses.

Not so sure about Guice...reports came out that he got into an altercation at one team's facility and it was also reported that he seems lazy and just wants to play video games.

I think that altercation report was denied by Howie. Every team passed on him for a reason.
Will he turn out to be a good player/teammate, I can’t wait to find out.

And I can't think of a better place for him than at WAS.

Never had a god impression on Guice... Eagles don't need him anyway, right? Ajayi?

I do like Ertz and Dallas though!
