I thought they explained that there were two players that needed to report. Only one player reported.

Few years ago it seemed like the refs were screwing the Lions every other game.

Yeah, only one player was being reported as eligible, but the ref was too busy looking at number 70 (was just running toward him and doesn’t really seem like he got a chance to talk to him) instead of Decker, who was in front of him reporting, as eligible. The ref wasn’t paying attention and probably thought Decker was reporting number 70 and not his number (68) as eligible.

This doesn’t make sense when you see that 70 is lined up as the guard with a TE and WR thus making him ineligible to be a receiver from the get go. I imagine that the ref thinking 70 as a receiver was the possible illegal formation as a possible reason for the flag along with ineligible man down field and illegal touching.

Yep. Ref clearly got confused, IMO, as you describe. That just shouldn't be able to happen.

Refs ****ed up and clearly wanted Dallas to win. This was almost as egregious as that contact play when the ball was thrown 40 yards over the receiver. Yet another game stolen from Detroit.

Granted I could now go back to that 4th down and say WTF take the points, had the Lions taken the 3 in 2nd Qtr instead of going for it they would have won and play would not have mattered.

This is why you take the points.

After the Lions scored a touchdown with 23 seconds remaining to pull within 20-19, offensive tackle Dan Skipper was announced by the official as an eligible receiver prior to the 2-point try.

Only one problem: The Lions claim that a conversation between Skipper and the official never happened, and that it was actually left tackle Taylor Decker who reported as eligible. So when the completed pass went to Decker — and after much celebration — a flag was dropped for illegal touching to much confusion on the Lions sideline.


"They didn't tell me anything after the play," Decker said. "All I really want to say on it, just so I don't get myself into trouble, is I did exactly what coach told me to do.

"I went to the ref, said, 'Report,' and yeah. I don't know. It was my understanding, too, that (head coach) Dan (Campbell) brings up the possibility of those sorts of plays pregame, so I did what I was told to do, did it how we did it in practice all week, and that's probably all we can touch on with that."


Campbell said postgame that he did inform the officials pregame that the play could be coming.

"I explain everything (to the refs) pregame, to a T," Campbell said. "OK, I did that. (The explanation was), (Skipper) reported, (Decker) didn't. We threw it to 68 (Decker)."

Referee Brad Allen, meanwhile, doubled down on his own story to pool reporter Calvin Watkins.


"On this particular play, (Skipper), who had reported during the game a couple of times, reported to me as eligible. Then he lined up at the tackle position, so, actually, he didn't have to report at all," Allen said.

"(Decker), who ended up going downfield and touching the pass, did not report. Therefore, he is an ineligible (player) touching a pass that goes beyond the line, which makes it a foul. So, the issue is, (Skipper) did report, (Decker) did not."

Adding to the confusion was the fact two flags were thrown on the play. Allen said that there was an additional flag thrown for an illegal formation because Skipper reported as eligible while being covered on the line of scrimmage, though the second infraction in itself seems to indicate the possibility that Allen had, in fact, gotten his signals crossed.

There were terrible calls on both sides, something needs to be done in the off-season to make refs more accountable for having such a huge impact on the outcome of games.

Campbell handed the game to the Cowboys by refusing to kick the PAT, not sure why he was so stubborn.

ill agree with you he was stubborn, had he kicked the FG in the 2nd QTR we wouldnt be having this convo. However even the announcers said it was Decker who reported and number 70 was running toward them but did not talk to them. The refs screwed up and once again it was against Detroit which is going to lead to a rule change again. But no acknowledgement by the NFL or Refs they ****ed up and cost Detroit the game. Its almost as bad as the what 60 false starts KC was allowed game 1 this year.

You can clearly see 70 run in to the right of the screen as 68 was reporting. Nuff said Refs ****ed up, NFL needs to do this right and give the game back to the Lions.

I don’t mind Dan’s gambles at all. People can’t complain when they don’t work but celebrate when they do work. Yeah he could have gone for 3 but they were not far from the end zone and if they didn’t get it then Dallas is already backed up. Problem was defense didn’t have much when it came to CeeDee Lamb.

Can’t kick EP and force a likely overtime. Detroit was already burned by this earlier this season against Seattle since NFL doesn’t know how overtime should work. Lose that coin flip and game is likely over. It’s stupid.
