Not surprising really. MJD is making far less than his true worth but the way the system is setup RB's typically get screwed unless the team in generous enough to draw up a new contract. MJD will be 29 at the end of his current deal, and at that age RB's are on their last legs and won't get a big new contract.

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/80...new-deal-wants

Quote:
The Jacksonville Jaguars have no plans to renegotiate running back Maurice Jones-Drew's current contract.

General manager Gene Smith confirmed Monday that Jones-Drew wants a new deal, but made it clear it's not going to happen.

"Obviously, he has expressed that he would like to renegotiate and we have expressed again that we feel he has a contract with two years left that we expect him to fulfill those obligations," Smith said.

Jones-Drew, who led the NFL in rushing last season with 1,606 yards, has two years remaining on a five-year deal worth $31 million that he signed in 2009. He is scheduled to make $4.45 million this season and $4.95 million in 2013.

That's considerably less than other top tailbacks. Tennessee's Chris Johnson is getting $13.5 million annually. Houston's Arian Foster is making $8.7 million a year. And Seattle's Marshawn Lynch is earning $7.75 annually. St. Louis' Steven Jackson, Carolina's DeAngelo Williams and Minnesota's Adrian Peterson also make more than Jones-Drew.

Jones-Drew has 6,854 yards rushing, 2,473 yards receiving and 74 total touchdowns in six seasons. He carried a career-high 343 times last year, averaging 4.7 yards even though defenses knew he was the focal point of the NFL's worst offense.

It makes sense that the 27-year-old back would want a new deal after a career year. But the Jaguars certainly don't want to set a precedent of paying players already in the middle of lucrative contracts.

"Our expectation with any player that's under contract is for them to fulfill their obligations," Smith said. "In terms of our position, he's got two years remaining."

I don't like it. I hope he doesn't make the team. I'd rather give the 5th roster spot to one of the rookies we drafted this year(6th and 7th round).

First 4 spots will probably be filled by: Bess, Hartline, Naanee and Clyde Gates.

The Florida Times-Union reports Maurice Jones-Drew will not attend this week's mandatory minicamp, and that it's possible he'll hold out into the regular season.
Jones-Drew can be fined up to $60,000 for skipping minicamp, but is ready to dig in as he seeks a new deal. MJD believes he's outplayed the five-year, $30.95 million pact he signed in 2009. GM Gene Smith said Monday the Jags have no intention of renegotiating. There's still plenty of time for MJD to be convinced to report to training camp, but if things continue down the path they're headed, a lengthy holdout is a distinct possibility. The fact that he's willing to sacrifice money says a lot. It's a serious problem for a team coming off a 5-11 season.

If he has another solid season (most likely) since he's 95% off the offense. I think Gene Smith would be forced to give him an extended contract. I mean he did workouts with Fred Taylor during the offseason. Taylor played a long time in the NFL despite being injured but if MJD takes care of his body he could play at the highest level at 32.

But Gene Smith is somewhat right. If he can't build a solid offense for the passing game. MJD will get the full load which will put more wear and tear on his body and would be prone to injury. Fred Taylor lasted long because back then we had a very good QB, and a good WR core and didn't have to rely on the run game so much.

Ballard is almost definitely out for the entire 2012 season but he's got a cheap contract and could help the Patriots in 2013. Ballard is a good player and the Giants might regret putting him on waivers, which was required before they could put him on injured reserve because he had less than 4 years experience.

CBS Sports' Rich Gannon suggested that Chad Ochocinco may struggle to learn the Dolphins' offense after having similar trouble in New England.
Gannon went to a Super Bowl in Jon Gruden's West Coast system, so he knows a thing or two about it. "You would think a veteran guy could learn a game plan," said Gannon. "(The Patriots) kept him around in the offseason program this year and he was still struggling. Now, going to a West Coast offense, he may struggle there." Gannon hinted that old Bengals OC Bob Bratkowski often dumbed down Cincinnati's offense to account for Ocho's limited offensive knowledge.

Lions running back Mikel Leshoure has been suspended two games after being arrested twice this offseason for marijuana possession. Leshoure was a second round pick of the Lions in 2011 but missed the entire season with a torn Achilles tendon.

Leshoure likely won't be the only Lion to start the season suspended. Fellow 2011 pick Nick Fairly will likely be facing a multi-game suspension due to arrests for marijuana possession and a DUI.
