He's definitely got guts announcing prior to the draft. Either way I doubt it makes much difference as he seems to be projected to go no worse than 2nd round. I wonder if having another active player openly gay will push Aaron Rodgers towards coming out.

The linked SI story thinks Michael Sam coming out has severely hurt his draft stock, and one current GM anonymously told Peter King that he doesn't think Sam will get drafted. The public excuse from teams would likely be that Sam doesn't have a position in the NFL, because he's too small to be a defensive end and struggled at the Senior Bowl as a linebacker, but there's no doubt if he goes undrafted his coming out will be a major reason.

Ehhhh.. I know this kid is getting all the shine because he came out on SC but there have been hundreds of gay players in the NFL. Maybe thousands..

I could care less about one more gay kid.

If he can play, he'll continue to be be Tebow'd by the media. If not, it will be another Manti Teo 'who cares-type' story and be mentioned here and there.

Anyone remember Jason Collins?

No, me either. He can't play. I could care less if he's gay or not but if you can't play..it doesn't matter. The first I've heard from Collins after "being the first player to publicly come out in the 4 major sports" is now, today. He talked with Sam about something, yada yada. I could care less.

There are currently zero confirmed current gay players in the NFL. Zero openly gay athletes in the biggest sports in the US.

And Jason Collins is a guy who was done with basketball. It's the only reason he came out. But a solid 3rd round draft pick coming out is HUGE news, inside and outside of the sports world. If you don't want to hear about it, then go watch something else.

I don't buy the "distraction" argument for a minute. Ya, I'm sure the press will be all over it at the start of his rookie season, but it'll likely be a non story VERY fast. This guy's notoriety isn't even a fraction of Tebow's coming out of college. It just won't be a lingering story IMO.

Michael Sam really cost himself a lot of money. Before this he was projected as a mid round pick, and now a lot of teams won't even consider drafting him until the third day if at all.

They're being stupid and homophobic and hiding behind whatever excuses they can come up with. But somebody will take him in the 3rd or 4th round, exactly where he would have gone originally.

I think that locker rooms will accept him as one of the guys, but not in the inner inner circle or like a team captain or something. Like in a work setting he gets in the door, but now there's a glass ceiling.

Like with any team captain, if he plays well, he'll be made a captain.
