Don't blame you one bit. I play in 3 leagues, and years ago all 3 decided to do away with keepers. It's hard enough navigating around injuries and contract disputes...but now I have to be mindful of these idiots getting arrested? No thanks!
I feel your pain!

Kaep and the 49ers sign an extension, 6 years 110 million, including 61 million guaranteed.

The insanity of QB contracts continues.

I thought it was for 126 million. But I'm glad we have him for 6 more years.

Sounds like the base value is $110 million, and it can be worth up to $126 million with incentives. Right now the incentives needed to get the extra $16 million are unknown. It's also unknown how much of the $61 million reportedly guaranteed is truly guaranteed. Often the guarantee that is initially reported isn't truly guaranteed as some of it is only guaranteed for injury, which in practical terms means it's not guaranteed. Kaep's signing bonus is only $12 million, which is low for a deal of this size, which may mean the true guarantee is well below $61 million.

That low of a signing bonus also likely means it's very back heavy.

I don't think that contract is too over the top. I doubt he'll ever become a top-3 type of QB but he's already one of the better QB's in the league. This definitely isn't a "Joe Flacco bad" type of contract. The guaranteed money is all that matters anyway in the NFL.

I think it is Flacco bad.

Half the backup QBs in the league would look good with the 49ers because the team is so loaded.

The real numbers of Kaep's deal are out, and the guarantee is nowhere near the reported $61 million guaranteed and it's purely a year-to-year deal in which he could be cut at any time if he underperforms:

Quote:
Technically, the deal has $61 million guaranteed, even though $6 million of the guaranteed salary could evaporate (more on that later). Either way, only $13.073 million is guaranteed at signing. It comes in the form of a $12.328 million signing bonus, a base salary of $645,000, and a workout bonus of $100,000.

For 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and part of 2018, the base salaries are guaranteed only for injury. On April 1 of each year, the guarantees convert from injury only to fully guaranteed. That gives the 49ers the ability to decide, in any given year, to move on from Kaepernick. And with the deadline for the conversion of the guarantee coming on April 1, the 49ers can squat on his rights until several weeks after the start of free agency, making it harder for him to get paid elsewhere.
The link discusses the deal further, which is definitely team-friendly in the long-run.

Not only that but I just heard the 9ers made him purchase a 20 million dollar injury insurance plan on his own so in-case he gets hurt they get 20 million lol. Hardly something like Hayensworth contract [which even that had weird closes for a million here, million there]

Don't worry. Wilson will top Kaep's contract after this season.

Ok, with the real deal spelled out I no longer think it is Flacco-bad.

Contract reporting in the NFL is stupid.

Yeah, reporters get the initial numbers from agents who are always going to exaggerate the guarantees. The real numbers usually come out when the contract is filed with the league, but most reporters don't bother correcting their initial story with the true guarantees so most people are still going to believe that Kaep got $61 million guaranteed even though he could be cut after this year and get nowhere near that.

Saw at barnes & noble the athlon season preview magazine:

afc champ - broncs over pats
nfc champ - seahawks over pack (they actually have the 49ers higher than the pack but they lose to seahawks in divisional round)
sb - broncs over seahawks - they say broncs get key guys back + off season additions while things just wont all break seahawks way again

To me broncs, hawks, 49ers, pats have really gapped everyone else....id be shocked if anyone other than 1 of those 4 won the sb.

All sexy picks, and will probably be all the pundit consensus picks...but I'm not so sure about New England. Brady is getting up there, and pretty much carried the team last season. Not so sure he can do that again. The only saving grace is they play in a very weak division, but a division that is catching up to them.
On the NFC side, keep an eye on those Eagles. Chip Kelly's 2nd year will go a long way to proving he's making his way to elite HC status, or a bust. Again, like the Pats, the NFC (L)East is a really weak division, and Philly is one of the youngers teams in the NFC which would bode well for a long playoff run.

As always I will be watching, ice cold beer in-hand, enjoying every moment thanks to NFL Sunday ticket.

Predictions always pick the same old teams, and it's never the same old teams.

It'll be interesting just to see if the Seahawks can buck the now 10 year trend of the Superbowl champ failing to win a playoff game the following year.
