Let's see bountygate happened right in the midst of the mammoth concussion lawsuit being levied at the NFL. Goodell sent a clear message that targeting someone to injure was not going to fly in today's NFL. The message was meant to be strong and felt all over the league. Which it was. I appluad Goodell for his action, as what happened inside the Saints locker room was deplorable.
As for Rice getting 2 games, again, until I hear otherwise I don't see why Goodell/the NFL would even want to say they only saw a partial video. As I just got finished saying, and as everyone know, Goodell intends to throw the book at wrongdoers. Why would he relent with Ray Rice? Obvious answer: he wouldn't. I'll just wait for the investigation to conclude and hear about the findings.
Burial of the Spygate scandel? He destroyed all the evidence. So what? Did you want it sent to the NFL HoF? On what grounds does Goodell need to show all this evidence? New England sure didn't offer up much of a fight, and took their spanking(oddly enough have never won a Superbowl since). So, fail to see the problem.

I think it's become clear that there are certain people here that just don't like Roger Goodell. That's fine, you are certainly entitled to your opinion. Just like I am. IMO, Goodell has done quite a bit for the league, while having to deal with so much. Through it all he's generated record breaking revenue by making the NFL an even better product. Owners certainly like that, as it's more money in their pocket.

Has Goodell been a hardass? Hell yes. Is the NFL better for it? Most definitely. Revenue, attendance, merchandise, player safety/conduct all attest to this.
And some are Goodell lap dogs. The Patriots got off light for Spygate. He buried the evidence without showing it to the public. He should have made it available to the public for transparency. He destroyed the evidence to protect the shield. He did that because if there is cheating within the sport, then that calls into question of whether the sport is fair. When you question whether a sport is fair, then that sport will inevitably be lost.

Look at Pete Rose and his lifetime ban. If you bet on sports, then that will call into question of whether teams are throwing (1919 Black Sox) games. Goodell buried the evidence so that no one could ever see it. That's called a cover-up. But yet he's incapable of doing the same here. He's incapable of lying through his teeth to cover up the fact that his suspension was rather light. And he made the wrong decision. Instead of owning up to it, he's chosen to lie and that is going to cost a lower-level NFL executive his job....

New England got off light? I was under the impression, that at the time, it was heaviest punishment ever doled out to a team in the ~90yr history of North American football. Of course, until Bountygate, that is.
I don't think anyone will lose their job, because I don't see why anyone would want to cover anything up? As for lying, Goodell has already gone on record saying he messed up, and acted quickly and decisively, after more facts surfaced.
All the Witch Hunters have to do is ask themselves this:
Why would Goodell even consider going light on Rice? No offense but who the hell is Ray Rice to Goodell? Maybe I could understand if it was someone much more high profile, like Peyton Manning. But it's just Ray Rice(and I don't mean that in a bad way). We've already established that Goodell, seemingly, loves to throw the book at wrongdoers. So why not in this instance? On the assumption that he only saw the edited tape, the AC prosecutor gave a slap-on-the-wrist sentence, Goodell still gave him 2 games. Perhaps, at the time, he felt that was punishment enough?
Again, I'll just wait until the investigation is over(i know the Witch Hunter's "meaningless" investigation, right gotcha), and see what new pieces it adds to the puzzle.

I'm sorry but a first round pick punishment with some cash is not a heavy fine considering they had another first round pick in that draft. If they had missed the playoffs the fine would have been a second or third. Big punishment... No one was even suspended.

He took Rice's wife at her word for what happened. He obviously didn't do his due diligence with regards to what actually occurred. It's not about Ray Rice. It's about Goodell and his mistakes.

All this Goodell hate, is just the media whipping the fans into a frenzy. That's all.
Let me guess, next week the media will go back to lobbying the Washington Redskins to change their name? Give me a break.

How about the media just give me box scores, and hold the opinions.

The media runs with whatever story attracts reads/views. There's no doubt about that. But the attacks on Goodell's character are entirely warranted. His entire tenure has been loaded with legitimate controversies and very unequal punishment or players and franchises, as other commenters have already brought up.

IMO it really isn't just Goodell, but rather a systemic problem with Commissioners across all pro sports. Bettman and Selig have been just as bad (probably worse) for their respective sports as Goodell has been for the NFL. Frankly I've never understood the whole idea of an "all powerful" sports Commissioner. It's an institutional relic of the past. Something like a 7+ person collective board appointed to term-limits would be my solution. Commissioners in pro sports have become essentially a lifetime appointment where sad little people like Goodell become de-facto dictators with little accountability. Too much power in the hands of one person is a recipe for disaster.

Do you even know anything about the appointment of this investigation? It is a complete insult to fans just like the NFLs handling of the entire situation. Lets look at the entire facts at hand here.

Who is heading the investigation on the owners side, 2 owners who are very loyal to Goodell and the NFL, John Mara of the New York Giants and Art Rooney. One of which (Mara) has already publicly said he'd never vote Goodell out no matter how much wrong he does.

Who else is involved, well the next person involved is Richard Cass. Richard spent 31 years at a law firm called Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering. This same Law firm just hired Muller for another investigation. And the law firm itself was also hired for the NFL investigation.

I don't think its entirely a coincidence that Muller or this law firm was hired to be independent investigators for the NFL especially since Cass happens to be the President of the Baltimore Ravens, a person who should have been fired a week ago when this Ray Rice stuff broke, as he was obviously involved in the cover up.

So if you don't think this investigation is a farce you really just are a sheep following the heard of the NFL.

That's something you'd have to take up with all the owners of the various leagues.

Yes, old news, and.... ?
As I said God could come down and conduct the investigation, but it wouldn't satisfy some of the Witch Hunters out there.

Yes everything is a cover up. Goodell has covered things up since Day 1, yet his all the owners seem to keep him around.

Edit: I really need to start selling tinfoil hats!

Nah man, Peterson has a history of abusing/neglecting his children, I imagine he'll play Sunday but I would call his status for the rest of the season as doubtful. Wrong time to get busted for something like this. Wow the Vikings didn't waste any time, Adrian Peterson has been deactivated.

Related story: Adrian Peterson fired up for Vikings upcoming season
MANKATO, Minn. -- Ten months after the death of his young son in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson says he has made some major changes in his life.
One of the game's top players -- rushing for more than 1,000 yards in six of his seven seasons and topping 2,000 yards in his 2012 league MVP season -- Peterson called the death of his 2-year-old son in October a reality check for him.
He learned only two months earlier that he was the boy's father and had been planning to meet him before the boy died Oct. 11. Joseph Robert Patterson, who was dating the boy's mother at the time, was charged with murder and manslaughter after he allegedly assaulted the child.
"It's just made me stop taking things for granted," Peterson said in a recent one-on-one interview with ESPN.com. "Life is short. You never know. You just want to take advantage of the time you do have."
Source - BSPN.com
Although I previously thought the child would be alive now if Peterson had been more involved, I wonder after hearing of today's events.

Ya, continue that cycle of abuse. If you have to resort to physically assaulting your children to get them to behave I'd say that speaks to your lack of parenting skills. Spankings are just nothing more than big people beating up on little people.
