Mike Patterson has brain AVM

Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Mike Patterson, who suffered a seizure at training camp Wednesday, has a brain arteriovenous malformation, a tangle of blood vessels in his skull, Eagles trainer Rick Burkholder said.

The condition, which is congenital, will require surgery or radiation treatment. The Eagles are seeking opinions from specialists before deciding on a course of treatment.

Patterson remains in Lehigh Valley Hospital, where he's listed in stable condition.

Patterson, 6-foot-1, 300 pounds, dropped to the ground between plays Wednesday during a morning practice, and began violently shaking.

He was immediately tended to by Burkholder and his staff, with assistance from rookie offensive lineman Danny Watkins, a trained firefighter.

Patterson's agent, JR Ricket, said in a statement Wednesday that the player is "in no pain and doing well."

"We are very grateful for everyone's prayers and support," he added. "Mike will be back at practice as soon as the doctors clear him."

Burkholder said Wednesday that the seizure lasted about four minutes, and Patterson lost consciousness at one point.

I knew a guy in high school that had a similar situation. He broke his leg playing football and when he was in the hospital they discovered he had cancer. Thanks to the early discovery he was able to get treatment and has been symptom free for 8 years, but if he hadn't broken his leg they said they wouldn't have found the cancer until it was too late and he would have been dead by 20.

I hope Michael retires so he can live a long healthy life instead of going back to football and risking a injury to his brain

I read the Raiders will be able to save $11 million by restructuring Richard Seymour's contract, which will just cause bigger cap problems in the future. The Steelers are going to restructure Roethlisburger's contract to help get under the cap. I would expect everyone will get under the cap pretty easily by restructuring contracts with big cap numbers.

And I hope the new CBA will afford him the benefit of actually having health insurance long-term if he doesn't play again. The guy did play like 7 seasons in Philly and until this happened he missed just one game in his career. You never know. Someone could be healthy their entire life yet have a ticking timebomb inside them.

As long as he keeps his head in check. He's a very solid safety, but he thinks he's a lot better than he really is. If he had a better work ethic he could be a Pro Bowl caliber player.

Perhaps. The Chiefs have a very tough schedule. I think they're the best team of the AFC West, but perhaps won't have the best record.
