The Titans should not redo Johnson's contract. He has two years remaining on his current contract. Don't recall Johnson saying it was not good enough back then. This is what is wrong with pro sports when players and owners get greedy. You sign a contract and you honor it. You never hear about athletes taking a pay cut after a poor season. The owners are to blame also. When their player has a good year, the owners reward him with a new contract even though the athlete is still under contract. Maybe Vince MCMahon had a good idea with the XFL where positions were salary capped. Just tired on seeing players holding out while still under contract every year.

In any other sport I'd agree. But in the NFL not a lot of money is guaranteed and players can be cut pretty much whenever a team feels like it. Running Backs in particular don't last long. Most backs are effectively done by 30 or 31. I support Chris Johnson 100% in getting every dime he can right now. If an owner can cut a player at any time it's only fair the player should be able to hold out and maximize their worth.

Damn, forgot about contracts not being guaranteed. So if CJ does not get a new contract, i guess he is in the same boat with Palmer...will not play at all as they are still under contract to their respective teams.

What is the percentage of the remaining contract goes to salary cap if a player is cut while under contract? I know Seattle had to eat some of Shawn's contract when they cut him with 2 years at $6 mill per season remaining.

I'd say redo it, but even Johnson should have some realistic idea of true value... Even put in some stipulation that even though he'll make 10 million a year for say 7 years in the end he'll match or exceed Larry's guaranteed money which in the end is all that matters. I know I'd take a 2 year 10 million dollar guaranteed deal then a 2 year billion dollar deal thats nothing but unattainable incentives.

Well lets see Johnson has done something no other back has done for 10 years... rushing for 2000 yards 2 years ago. Yeah I would say he has some worth and should be rewarded, He is only making 550k this season so yeah 1 can imagine why he is upset, Last year he wanted to renegotiaite and settled for 850k last year. Johnson has done what he needs to do, now it is time for the owner to boss up and pay the man.

If he were to enter negotiations and play in pre season and get injured then hell never see any money. It sucks to say but he is doing what he needs to do to protect himself for the long term. Frank Gore is in the same boat except he is actually still playing. Could he improve his standing by participating in meetings and small conditioning drills sure, but apparently he has decided to take the hard way into getting what he wants.

That's the main thing, Johnson needs to get realistic. He wants QB money and that isn't going to happen. Maybe he could get that if he were a free agent but he's got 2 years left on his deal and his only leverage is to hold out. The Titans and Johnson's agent need to start actually negotiating rather than making comments to the media. The Titans have said they want to make Johnson the highest paid running back in the NFL but they haven't actually presented an offer yet.

I have sympathy to Johnson because he is still playing on his rookie deal but if I were the 49ers I wouldn't even consider a massive extension for Gore. Gore has already gotten his big second contract and will make almost $5 million this year. Gore is also coming off an injury and is 28, which is getting old for running backs, so I would make him prove he's healthy and effective before even considering an extension.

Gore has stated he wants anew contract but is showing up for team workouts and is at practice so I do not see there being an issue.

That's the way it should be, which is why I have no sympathy at all for people like Chris Johnson. You want to hold out so you can "get paid"? At least come to the facility, be a teammate, etc.

$5 says the guy pops a hammy by game 3.

Could've sworn I heard he's making $1M this year (and already has $700,000 in fines).

He wont pop anything without playing.

I'm all for people getting paid when it's due, but you sign a contract, honor i or just leave. He only wants a contract now so he can crap out and still get money.

You're right. My post presupposed he actually broke down and signed a contract, settling for like $9M/year.

per NFLN:
"This is a rough estimate -- But I believe Titans, based on 26 missed days, can fine CJ up to $780K at this point. His 2011 base: $1.065M."

Fines arent definite yet.

Totally agree. Honor it or retire or go hang out with your possee of unemployable friends. This should go for all players. If the owners want to redo a contract, that is fine. What happens if he gets hurt or play like crap, do they ever give any money back or ask for a new contract that is less than their current contract? Highly unlikely. It is time for the owners to tell the idiots to honor the contract or stay on the sidelines and be fined. At the rate Johnson is going, he is going owe the owner money.
