Long's assessment comes one day after he observed Blaine Gabbert "(continuing) to struggle with short passes." In Gabbert's defense, the Jags are installing a new system, but the fact that he still can't even light up practice more than two years after being the No. 10 overall pick is a troubling sign. We'd suspect the Jags pull the plug on the Gabbert experiment early this season, with an eye toward finding his "successor" in the 2014 draft.

Patriots released/non-football illness DT Kyle Love.
Only 26 years old and a 24-game starter next to Vince Wilfork the past two seasons, Love recently lost a large amount of weight and was diagnosed with Type-2 diabetes. The Love camp is confident he'll be 100 percent soon. Love recorded 4.5 sacks between 2011 and 2012, and last year graded out as a top-20 run-stuffing defensive tackle in Pro Football Focus' ratings, although the Pats had clearly begun to sour on him. Still young with a history of effectiveness, 6-foot-1, 310-pound Love should generate interest around the NFL.

I don't understand why the Patriots released Love. I get the Diabetes thing but if he was truly going to be fine (as his agent claims) there was no reason to get rid of him now. At the very least they could have waited until training camp to see how he progressed. Love was only set to make $750,000 this year so there was no reason to get rid of him now.

On another note, I don't like Richard Sherman but this is funny:

Sherman wrote on the Facebook page for the Richard Sherman Celebrity Softball Game that the umpire will be Lance Easley, one of the replacement refs who handed the Seahawks a win over the Packers last season by ruling that Seattle had scored a Hail Mary touchdown as time expired.

“Remember the Ref who called TD during the Green Bay Game Monday Night??? His name is Lance Easley and he is going to Umpire for us July 7th! Don’t be surprised if a few flags are thrown,” Sherman wrote.

Goodson was stopped early this morning on I-80 West, where he was a passenger in an SUV. Police said he and the driver were intoxicated, evidently sufficiently enough that both were sent to a hospital before police processed them. Later, Goodson was hit with a bundle of charges: unlawful possession of a handgun, possession of a loaded handgun, possession of a hollow-point round, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He's presently in jail in Morris County.

Sounds like Titus Young might actually have a mental issue....

The Titus Young story has officially gone from funny to sad to worse.

The Press-Enterprise of Riverside (Calif.) is reporting that Young's ex-girlfriend obtained a restraining order against him last week. The order, which was granted May 8 by a judge in Riverside County, requires the former Detroit Lions receiver to stay at least 100 yards away from the woman, who is also the mother of Young's 8-month-old son, Titus Jr.

“He would say things like, ‘I understand why O.J. killed his wife.’ He says, ‘We’re always gonna be a family and I’m always going to be his,’” the restraining order request states. “He got mad and yelled at my neighbors and tried to fight multiple people that he doesn’t even know.”

Young’s ex-girlfriend said she called police because Young would repeatedly wait outside her Moreno Valley home, and that he threatened and harassed her.

“Titus Young Sr. has been clinically diagnosed with a mental disorder and I am afraid of what he is capable of doing,” she wrote in the restraining order request. “He also has been in a mental help facility more than once and still believes that he does not have a problem.”

The woman also said in her request for the restraining order that Young frequently talks to himself and goes for long walks without coming back. And while it's been widely reported that Young was arrested three times in a week, a fourth arrest has now been confirmed. A few hours before his DUI and first burglary arrests, Young allegedly tried twice to rob a gas station some 95 miles south in Laguna Hills. The Detroit Free Press says Young attempted to steal candy, cigars, and a bottle of water. His ex says that during those thefts Young was holding his son, whom he had taken without telling her.
