To say one has a better work ethic than Haynesworth ... what does that really say about a person?

Quote:
Every year in the last few, it seems as if Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland was in danger of losing his job. Ever year, owner Stephen Ross has supported Ireland and kept him employed.

Until Tuesday when the team announced it had mutually parted ways with Ireland, the team's GM for the past six years.

While the move shouldn't be considered shocking, Ross reportedly assured Ireland less than a month ago that his job was safe after the 2013 season. But perhaps the fact the team lost its final two games of the season to finish 8-8 to miss the postseason for the fifth-straight year ultimately sealed Ireland's fate.

At least one report said the team hadn't planned on relieving Ireland of his duties, but according to NFL.com's Jeff Darlington, Ireland would have been stripped of his power, which is why he mutually agreed to leave the team.

"I've spent the last six years with the best organization in football," Ireland said in a statement released by the team Tuesday evening. "Steve and I came to an agreement that the best thing moving forward for all parties would be to part ways. I'd like to thank Steve for all his support and kindness. I've had the opportunity to work with some of the most amazing people during this time and I'd like to thank them all from the bottom of my heart."

Said Ross: "I want to personally thank Jeff for his hard work and dedication in building the team over the past six years. After a series of discussions, we both felt that it was in our mutual best interest to part ways. Jeff was a loyal and dedicated member of the Dolphins and we wish him and his family nothing but the best."

Ireland was hired for the job by Bill Parcells before the 2008 season, along with new coach Tony Sparano, and that season, the Dolphins went to the playoffs with an 11-5 record. But in 2010, Ireland embarrassed the club when it was revealed that he asked Dez Bryant, who was then entering the NFL draft, if his mother was ever a prostitute.

In 2012, planes flew over Miami with banners begging Ross to fire Ireland, and this past November, fans left frustrated messages on Ireland's voice mail when his contact info was revealed on Twitter.

This past offseason, Ireland, in what seemed like a desperate attempt to keep his job, spent $250 million on contracts, including that of receiver Mike Wallace. But with this debacle of a season -- don't even get us started on the whole Richie Incognito-Jonathan Martin mess -- Ross apparently had enough of Ireland running the personnel department.

While it appears as if Miami will keep coach Joe Philbin, Ireland now will join offensive coordinator Mike Sherman as ex-Dolphins employees.

The team wrote in its release that it "will conduct an immediate search to bring new leadership to head the team's football operations."

As CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora writes, assistant general manager Brian Gaines would be a good candidate to take over that job.

Either way, at least one purported Dolphins fan had to be pleased by the news.

I wouldn't mind seeing Ireland back in Dallas to help Jerry run the team, Ireland was there the last time we actually seemed to be consistently drafting well.

Well something needs to change, Jerry doesn't draft well when he's the biggest influence on draft day. His plan skews way too much towards getting the flashiest players possible and never addresses the positions you have to use to build a solid foundation for consistent success.

Raiders owner Mark Davis confirms Dennis Allen will be back as the team's coach in 2014.
ESPN

[Show spoiler]"We met (Tuesday) evening at the Raider facility, and the meeting went really well," Davis told ESPN. "We talked about a lot of things, from personnel issues to the coaches to a review of the past season to the draft and our needs for next season. ... We're ready to rock and roll." It's unclear how much, if any, danger Allen's job was actually in, but he's getting a deserved third season at the helm in Oakland. GM Reggie McKenzie's roster, and not Allen's coaching, was the problem in 2013. Neither McKenzie nor Allen is going to have much rope in 2014.

I was kind of hoping he'd get fired but hey, let's see what he can do.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell remains "excited" about the possibility of a team permanently playing in London, but "doesn't care" if Los Angeles or London gets a team first.
Rachel_Nichols Twitter

[Show spoiler]In other words, it appears the league is still hellbent on placing a team across the pond. The league's now-annual London fixtures have proven a moderate hit in the Queen's Country, but it's still entirely unclear if there's sufficient appetite for a full-time club. The league's sense of manifest destiny seems misplaced with the concussion crisis still far from settled, but dollar signs trump all. There's a good chance London gets a team within the next 10 years.

LA team would be sort-of-kind-of big news but a international team in London would be awesome. Hopefully it doesn't take 10 years to make happen!

Goodell said the NFL wants teams to make wining their division the first concern.

"We've discussed this for decades in the NFL and we believe that's the right priority," he said. "And when you do, you should have that home game. I don't see the owners pushing for a big change in that, and that's ultimately where it has to come from. I know this has been discussed in the media, but I don't see that happening."
goodell on playoff reseeding... thank god

expanding playoffs has much more steam

In a wide-ranging interview Tuesday night, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said there's no guarantee of another cold-weather Super Bowl and also mentioned the possibility of future playoffs with more wild-card teams and a schedule that could include games on Friday and Monday in addition to the traditional Saturday and Sunday setup.
Yes lets expand the playoffs so the 8-8 teams can make it...while were at it..lets give participation ribbons to all the teams. Friday and Monday? He is really trying to ruin the NFL and he's doing a good job

Greedy, money hungry moron

The Friday games would have to come late in the season. Part of the Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961 states that NFL games can't be televised on a Friday night if a high school football game is going on within 75 miles of the stadium, so that means no games could be played on Friday until late November at the earliest, depending on when high school football ends in each state.

Goodell means maybe friday/monday wildcard games since there would be 6 games that weekend in a 14 team playoff format.

I still think it will be 3 saturday/3 sunday.

Though i could see a monday nite game with the winner slotted for the next sunday.

Records dont bother me....the seahawks made it at 7-9 & even won a game + the giants won the super bowl at 9-7.

I agree, that the playoffs shouldn't be expanded. But we have to give it to Goodell, he is a very smart businessman that knows how to sell the NFL. Anything the NFL touches seems to turn to gold.

He's just worried that there would be an additional week to videotape the opponent

Keenan Lewis finally responds to Philly fans cheering his head injury last weekend and booing him for staying down on the ground:

Quote:
Keenan Lewis said he did hear many Eagles fans booing while he was down on the field.. He said that added even more motivation for him to try and get back in the game.

"I definitely wanted to go back in to show them," Lewis said. "Well they can cheer when they lose, too. They're going home and we're moving on. But the fans never really bother me."

I hope it doesn't become like the NHL/NBA which have too many teams in playoffs. NFL is fine as it is..why ruin it?

Cowboys and Dolphins would make playoffs every year at a solid 8-8 and we can watch that crap fest for 1 extra week

He wants to ruin it?

Why raise ticket prices? Maybe because people will pay it, simple supply and demand. Trying to expand internationally is stupid?

I do agree that I think there are enough playoff teams, right now there is a great balance. But I don't blame them for at least considering every avenue.

Right now there are 162 tickets on ticketexchange for the pats game..most i have ever seen for playoffs since about 02. I remember when it was impossible to get tickets...now? no issues at all. Same with cincy, Gb, colts. 4 tickets..parking ect...you are looking at 1,000+ for a day at gillette

Demand can't be that high

I never really understood the hate Irelend received from so many Dolphin fans. I guess he was an easy scapegoat. As far as his firing, I'm fine with it. While I think he was decent elevator he had more than enough time to turn it around. At least it appears he found as a possible franchise QB as well as talent throughout the roster. But his biggest failing, and the one that probably led to his demise was his inability to put a good OL together. He spent enough picks and money on the unit, and it just never came together. Now we have one great player, and big question marks at the other four positions.
