In fact the Blackhawks were named after a WWI infantry division which was named after a famous Native American warrior. That name absolutely is not disparaging.

A Brave is simply a name that was used for Native American warrior. Also not disparaging.
You're telling me... Just to be absolutely clear... That in the 21st century where I can see people getting slaughtered in Iraq over twitter and youtube that my Football teams name, who nobody who follows the NFL brings up ever as a problem... Except when its a national rant, and rave by politicians. Is one of the worst things going on in America or the world involving sectarian denigration

Bringing up a completely unrelated topic to district from the topic at hand. South Park covered this years ago. I will give you some credit for originality. Never before had I seen someone bring up Iraq to distract from a American football discussion.

It makes perfect sense and directly relates to it... With all the horrible things going on in this world and REAL issues in this country, some want to change a name of a sports team... That goes unnoticed when it isn't a talking point that scores hits on social media and 24hr news cycles, and nobody who has uttered the word around said sporting event in which the team plays is using it to be derogatory or with a negative connotation... Bottom line, if people cared about real issues and didn't rant and rave on meaningless useless issues, and instead invested their time in things that were actually productive and beneficial we might actually see some changes in the world lol

ALL sports are meaningless compared to "real world" issues like war and peace. But this isn't the appropriate place for such talk. Are you suggesting we all stop talking about sports because there is war going on someplace in the world? That's ridiculous. We're grown up enough to walk and chew gum at the same time. People are going to talk about your team having a racial slur for a nickname as long as your team continues to have a racial slur for a nickname whether you like it or not.

And you live in Massachusetts? Gee... I can't imagine why. Could be that there practically no Native Americans left in that region left.

Just stop... Being in the northeast has no bearing on how it is currently used. No one says Redskin as a derogatory name anymore. Yes in the past it was used in a derogatory sense, but it really isn't the case anymore.

So the term Redskin means something positive and not racist these days? No dictionary I can find has it listed as anything other than an extremely offensive racial slur.

The online Oxford Dictionary says this: “‘Redskin’ is first recorded in the late 17th century and was applied to the Algonquian peoples generally, but specifically to the Delaware (who lived in what is now southern New York state and New York City, New Jersey, and eastern Pennsylvania). Redskin referred not to the natural skin color of the Delaware, but to their use of vermilion face paint and body paint.”

What I was saying was that Redskin is a very dated name that is no longer in use.

For who knows what reason, Falcons traded LB Akeem Dent to the Texans for QB TJ Yates.

I mean team names need to be positive now

You are living in the wrong century.... When half this country couldn't tell you where azerbaijan is on a map you're telling me people are walking around 1. using it as a slur [never happened in all my years walking this earth] and 2. Even know its original meaning [back 2 centuries ago lmao]

Like I said people have far too much time on their hands why don't those few seeking personal publicity or outrage work on combating the insanely high levels of obesity, drug abuse, and joblessness that plague reservations and Native Americans...

Except this is not the 1st time Native Americans have asked for the team name to be changed. This is actually the 2nd lawsuit brought forward by Native Americans regarding the name of the team. Its obvious a minority of people feel the name is oppressive and racially degrading.

The Redskins team actually lost the 1st lawsuit back in 1999 and appealed for 6 years before that ruling was overturned because those that filed were "to old". The ongoing lawsuit over the team name is actually the 2nd lawsuit that has been filed.

I am in the majority I am a white American male, I cannot sit here and say I know what these people are going through. Anyone in my situation would be ignorant to do so. You may be a Redskins fan but unless you are Native American which judging by your comments I do not see that as being the case, if I am wrong please correct me, you have no right to sit here and criticize these people for doing what they feel is a slam on their national heritage to get the name changed.

Quote:
On an issue like this, public opinion is just a distraction. The reason the Redskins should change their name has nothing to do with what anyone thinks now, in the second decade of the 21st century. The reason the Redskins should change their name is the same reason they should have changed it decades ago -- the same reason they never should have picked the name in the first place. The word "Redskin" has a well-established history as a racist epithet, and such words have no business being sung and chanted in support of a professional sports team. Simple as that, and it has nothing to do with tradition or fan pride or whether anyone's still offended by the name today. If the word has ever been used to ridicule or belittle human beings on the grounds of race, what's the good reason to keep it alive in a glorifying context? Changing it would harm literally no one. It would be an act with no motive but basic human courtesy. - Dan Graziano, ESPN

Never in my life have I heard the term Redskin spoken in any other reference besides the football team. It's pretty sad all the time and money people are spending worrying about changing the name of a team that shouldn't be changed. It seems more than anything else, the people most worried about the name of a supposedly offensive team name are white people. My cousin married a woman who is Native American. I've seen first hand how little this term bothers Native Americans.

It's not like this is a new subject. It's been around for decades. It's just that people are actually listening. "redskin" is a slur for native americans just like the "N" word is for black people. There are different kind of natives throughout America. I'm native and up here in my part "muck" is a slur. And yes racism is still in full affect. Your last paragraph shows it. Maybe you didn't mean it, but that's what you wrote.

The Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun casinos would probably disagree with that statement.

Not picking on you Chad, but if we're gonna bring up what the word "redskin" means according to history and the dictionary, then the Buccaneers & Vikings franchises better start considering a name change soon also!
  • buccaneer: The buccaneers were pirates who attacked Spanish shipping in the Caribbean Sea during the 17th century.
  • viking: Any of the Scandinavian pirates who plundered the coasts of Europe from the 8th to 10th centuries.

Unless the NFL condones this kind of violence.
(Oh crap, I didn't even mention the Raiders!!! )
