Falcons fired coach Mike Smith.

Smith went 66-46 in seven years at the helm of the Falcons and was the 2008 NFL Coach of the Year, but was just 1-4 in four playoff appearances and 10-22 over the last two seasons. There was no way the Falcons could bring him back, even if they somehow had made the postseason in the lowly NFC South. Smith, a defensive-minded head coach, had the league's worst defense this season and No. 27 unit in 2013. He also repeatedly bungled end-game situations. The Falcons join the 49ers and Jets as teams with head coaching vacancies so far on Black Monday.

I voted Steelers. Assuming Bell is healthy they're the only AFC team playing this weekend that I could see having a chance at New England. Baltimore could be tough for New England as well, but I can't see their terrible secondary being able to handle New England's passing game.

I considered the Cowboys but I can't see them winning what would most likely be back-to-back games at Green Bay and Seattle.

I'm a little surprised but I've got some mutual acquaintances with Orton and they said he was completely content to retire after last season but the money Buffalo offered plus not having to go through the offseason program and training camp made the situation too good to turn down. Orton doesn't live a lavish lifestyle like many pro athletes so money should never be an issue for him and wasn't going to play a big role in his decision to return or not.

Not sure I agree with that. Only 2 losing seasons in 6 years, to go with 2 straight AFC Championship appearances. Also finishing 2nd in the AFC East 4 times, unfortunately having New England win the Division every year. Which has been, arguably, the best team in the last 10-15 years.

As for opting to go the DC route, I doubt Atlanta would be his first choice...especially since they nixed Ryan to go with Smith 6 years ago, but stranger things have happened.
