Either way, I've always been a believer in taking slightly less money in an amazing situation that will increase your odds of playing all the way through the contract and actually making more in the long run.

See Albert Haynesworth and other greedy FAs... If Fat Albert took less money to stay put here, he would've made more money in the long run.

Hope sticking it to Denver was worth it... Would've had a lot more success staying in Denver than he will in Houston.
Fat Albert was a contract year player and everyone knew it except for Dan Snyder. He was never going to put forth an effort after receiving a huge contract.

Has any NFL player ever been paid like Chase Daniel? In 2013 he got a 3-year, $10 million contract despite never starting a game, and then yesterday he got a 3-year, $21 million deal with $12 million guaranteed despite only starting 1 game in 2013 and 1 game in 2014. It's not like he was Matt Flynn who was impressive in those starts, as in his 2013 start he had 200 yards passing and a touchdown in an overtime loss to the Chargers, and in the 2014 start he had 157 yards passing in a win over the Chargers. It's also not like he was highly-regarded out of college and is living off that reputation, since he was undrafted. He is just living the life, getting paid while not taking a beating.

Osweiler just left the world champions who have the best defense in the league. I would've said it's an awful decision to leave Denver no matter what team.

As for the part of your quote I bolded, I'm going to be completely honest here... I HATE hearing that. It's an excuse we always hear when people chase more money. If you're making millions of dollars a year, an extra couple isn't going to be enough to say "well I had my family in mind and wanted to make sure I could provide for them." I call BS. They can use that excuse all they want, but average Americans make less in a lifetime than what they make in a couple games.

I assure you... It's as lame an excuse as you'll ever hear.

Osweiler was going to make PLENTY of money in Denver. It was reported he was offered in the $16mil range per year... Instead he went and took the $18mil per year deal. Pretty sure he could've afforded to provide for every single person in his entire family off of $16mil. Could retire after one year and still provide enough for generations. So yea, I hate that excuse. And I honestly can't believe people buy it.

EDIT: ~$16mil/year with Texans. Broncos offered ~$13mil/year. Still all the same, but figured I'd correct it.
Just a few thoughts since others here have essentially argued some of the points I would have made...

So you're saying that Brock left a good situation with the SB champs who have the best defense in the league? Did it dawn on you that perhaps he had his ear to the ground, heard that a bunch of guys could be planning on cashing in/leaving the team to chase the big money in free agency (which is PRECISELY what happened) and decided to start anew in HOU with a team that already has some nice pieces on offense and defense not to mention play in arguably the worst division in the league? Sounds like a solid career path to me regardless of the pay increase involved. Von Miller a defense does not make without a supporting cast and honestly, I'd much rather play in the lowly AFCS and avoid the twice a season beasts that DEN, OAK and KC have been churning out as of late.

As far as your chasing money theory, none of us has an idea what financial shape any of these guys are in. Not to mention, this isn't the 70's or 80's where a lot of guys used to play the game largely for the competition and the love of the game while they got paid peanuts and took each other's heads off...this is a BUSINESS. If teams can cut a player/terminate their contract on a whim to save some money, then it's only fair that players can jump ship whenever they see fit/have an opportunity elsewhere to make as much money as they can to optimize their value. This is a what have you done for me lately business that can end a career on the next snap. Just like you say you can't believe people buy the "lame" money "excuse," I can't believe you still cling to an antiquated view of a league that has clearly changed in front of our eyes within the past 20 years once all of these huge contracts began getting doled out.

Forte's deal with the NYJ is for 3 years, $12M but is essentially a 2-year deal with an escape route for the team after 2017. $8M in guaranteed money with $4M in escalators. I.E. much cheaper than what Ivory wanted/got.

I agree. If contracts were fully guaranteed then I'd have an issue with players complaining about money/ holding out and such. As it stands now, most guys could get cut tomorrow and receive minimal to no compensation. I don't blame guys in the NFL trying to get every dollar they can.

Reports are the Jets are interested in trading for Colin Kaepernick. Who knows if the Jets are genuinely interested in Kaep or they're just trying to pressure Ryan Fitzpatrick into lowering his asking price.

So if Osweiler has a market value of $18 million a year what will Andrew Luck be worth in his next contract, $30 mill plus a year?

Been confirmed that this is just a ploy to get Fitz signed, but still...ugh.

On a much happier note, we re-signed Bilal Powell as well as signed former NO RB Khiry Robinson.

Luck will be interesting, especially if a deal doesn't happen this offseason. He can pretty much name his price, and if the Colts won't agree to his price he could just go year-to-year on the exclusive franchise tag, which would pay him roughly $25 million in 2017, $30 million in 2018, and then $43 million in 2019 since the salary would go up 144% after the tag is used twice. I don't think it would ever get to that point, but Luck should shatter the record for guaranteed money. I don't think a five year deal in the $140 million range with $100 million fully-guaranteed is out of the question.

This is just the natural evolution of the game, that is a QB driven league.
If you're going to pay, pick or sign...QB is where you want to apply the most attention. i haven't looked it up but I wouldn't be surprised to see a lot of RB money going to QB/receivers as the rules clearly are geared to a passing game.
Great for him! I'd love to be making several Mil/year holding a clipboard!
Bradford is another one, who hasn't really won at anything in the NFL, short of the bargaining table. It's not his fault. He just happens to be looking for contracts when QBs are in demand, and supply is low.
Plus we all know the NFL mantra: If you don't pay for him, someone will.

I think he is going to have a monster year. He wants to shut all the doubters up and get rid of all his frustration.

Dallas signs Cedric Thorton from Philly! Sorry to see him go, but like Alonso, he became a scheme casualty!
I wish something could've been worked out, as he was always a great locker room guy. Will be rooting for him 14/16 games going forward.
