That's where he belongs, but it's an awful lot to pay a guy who can only play one spot. Even in the slot, he's nothing special.

If Webster was still our GM, we would've been the ones signing him to an outrageous deal. Just look at the Michael Griffin 5 year/$35mil deal back in 2012. Terrible.

Nickel corners are getting bigger salaries these days as most teams run 3 wide. The contract he received is median for the position.

I'm guessing Sensabaugh would be the nickel and Trumaine Johnson and EJ Gaines will play outside. From what I've heard Sensabaugh was alright when he played the nickel and Gregg Williams was the defensive coordinator for the Titans.

Cards-Pats blockbuster from @diannaESPN and me: Cards trade G Jonathan Cooper + 2nd-rd pick to NE for DE Chandler Jones, per sources.

Chandler Jones is a freak athlete but is in the final year of his rookie deal and is going to be looking for a contract in the $11 million per year range minimum. Cooper is also entering the final year of his rookie contract (although the Patriots could exercise his fifth-year option for 2017) but hasn't been very good so far, getting benched last year.

I guess the Patriots had no plans to sign him longterm? Might as well get something for him then. A 2nd round pick is nothing to sneeze at.

Next year Jones, Jamie Collins, and Dont'a Hightower will be unrestricted free agents and Malcolm Butler will be a restricted free agent. Although the Patriots have a ton of cap room next year it's unlikely they could afford to sign all four to long-term deals. It's not a surprise Jones was the player viewed as most dispensable after his behavior under the influence of synthetic marijuana during the playoffs.

I think the Patriots are just being careful to who they sign long term. The Jones family has a history of drug abuse and erratic behavior. They certainly don't need anything else on the franchise resume after Hernandez.

Pass rushers are getting paid. If jones doesn't get 90 million dollar contract then he must have been suspended or injured cause he's getting it. No way in hell the pats make him the highest paid player on the team.

Patriots acquired TE Martellus Bennett and a sixth-round pick from the Bears in exchange for a fourth-round pick.

Chicago shopped Bennett all offseason and finally found a taker in New England. It's essentially a one-year flyer for the Patriots, who absorb Bennett's $5.1 million salary. Bennett gives Bill Belichick a complement to Rob Gronkowski for the first time since Aaron Hernandez. His addition reduces Danny Amendola's role, with the Patriots likely moving to more TE-heavy sets. Bennett struggled with injuries last year, but is a strong bounce-back candidate in New England. Still only 29 years old, Bennett's addition should improve both the Patriots' run and pass games, as he is an adept blocker. New England will be able to line up Bennett (6'6/259) and Gronk (6'6/264) in red-zone sets. The rich get richer.
