I don't think the Jaguars are expecting Bortles to become a top QB, but they'll settle with an "elite game manager", someone able to avoid turnovers and also able to make 2 or 3 key throws per game, a la Trent Dilfer with the Ravens, Brad Johnson with the Buccanneers, or the most modern version, Alex Smith with the 49ers.

Of course, by doing that, they are also placing a lot of confidence in their running game and defense, and a lot of pressure as well, because unless you have a legendary defense and a very good running game (again, Baltimore 2000, Tampa 2002, Denver 2015), you can only get so far with a game manager (Alex Smith!).

An 85 QB rating with 13 picks isn't even an effective game manager.

I would hardly call Brad Johnson a game manager in 2002. He was one of the best QB's in the league with a 93 QB rating, 3rd in the NFL. Not comparable to 2000 Baltimore or 2015 Denver's starting QB's who were far below the league average.

But at the same time he was 16th in yards per attempt. He wasn't gunslinging, he was throwing short-medium passes, and was very effective, hence the "elite game manager" moniker I used.

I just don't feel this is a move that makes financial sense. Should have gone all out trying to land Cousins. Paying Cousins close to $30 million makes more sense than Bortles at $22 million. If not Cousins use some picks to move up in the draft and land the QB they want. The Jags have most other positions stacked and can afford to give up some picks to move up.

I’m just surprised Jacksonville didn’t go balls to the wall to get Cousins. Their window to win is now while much of their young talent is on cheap deals.

Hmm...

Vikings reportedly won't franchise tag Case Keenum, but what's next for them at QB?

The tag price is too high. I wouldn't be surprised to see them sign Keenum to a deal without the tag.

Cousins is a possibility too. Mutual interest, according to Gil Brandt.

Jets LB Dylan Donahue was arrested for a DWI after crashing his car into a bus in the Lincoln Tunnel driving in the wrong direction at 2am this morning. He failed sobriety and breathalyzer tests. He reportedly blew a .15, double the legal limit.

The New York Times reports commissioner Roger Goodell is planning to fine Cowboys owner Jerry Jones "millions of dollars" for conduct detrimental to the league.

That conduct was Jones' "efforts to derail negotiations to renew Goodell’s contract," as well as his "outspoken defense" of Ezekiel Elliott. Per reporter Ken Belson, Goodell has been "reluctant to be seen as exacting retribution for the way Jones tried to sabotage his contract talks," but was "urged to bring the penalties by several owners who believed that Jones had crossed an unspoken boundary by threatening his colleagues." Jones has indeed spent most of the past year publicly bellowing about the league's boss. Expect a torrent of lawsuits and recriminations to follow.

NFL is being smart about the catch rule finally. If it looks like a catch, it's a catch. No need to overthink it.

Difference is good chance A-Rod scores on us and we lose anyway.

You can't play the 'what if' scenario. It will drive you crazy.

You sound like one that has been tormented by the 'what if' scenarios of Super Bowls past.
