If only more people altered their lives to avoid public gatherings, maybe the spread might not have gotten so bad, so quick.
This is all about holding out for an extended period of time until medical facilities can function without getting overwhelmed and a vaccine is widely available.
I wish my kids had that opportunity. As of right now, school will be starting as scheduled in Pennsylvania. And you are right about half the country not taking this seriously. We are in this position because of them. But as I said life needs to go on. If we can have a season, it would be a welcomed dose of fun and excitement I think many of us could use. I have a 3 and 6 year old and a wife with asthma. It sure would be nice if I could opt out, get a lump payment, and know my job would be there next year. I don’t have that luxury. I don’t blame any player for opting out. Everyone’s situation is different. But if a season can be played, we need to go through with it. We’re all in this together, and the economy could use whatever shot in the arm sports can provide.

What about the hundreds of thousands of tests the NFL will use that could be going to your family? What about how the NFL will get first spot in line at the lab testing facility? What if your family had to get a test done and had to wait added days or weeks because all the NFL tests are a higher priority?
We don’t need the NFL. We need small businesses up and running. As they provide much more to the economy than the NFL does.
Sorry I have seen no compelling argumentS for sports to go on, but I’ve seen many for them to take this season off.
Again, I say this as a huge sports fan, but it’s just not right. How many bandaids are you going to put on these sports? How much duct tape will be used to hold them together?
A shot in the arm, you say...how about a vaccine?

Stop making so much sense you'll never win that argument around here and are like me liable to get suspended from the forums!

The corporate world is cut throat. They are going to make deals that benefit them. Not saying it is ethical, but the NFL certainly isn’t the only business finding ways to make gains. Why should small businesses be up and running and not sports? Both should be up and running. People are going to continue to get this virus. But our country has made it very clear that they don’t have any plans to shut down again. As long as that is the case, sports should be able to go on. This is our new normal until a vaccine is in mass production. Things aren’t going to look like they did before for quite some time. But life also needs to go on.

Small business employs 80% of the country. NFL employs only a couple thousand workers. Not a real comparison. NFL employees especially players owners and executives are rich. Most small business employees are not and live paycheck to paycheck, Sports can afford to be shut down small business cannot.

As poor as the economy is right now, it needs all the help it can get. The NFL is a money making machine.

Its a money making machine for a tenth of a percent of the population. Small business 80% of the economy you do the math.

Lets also put into perspective, if you go on furlough from work you get 600 dollars every 2 weeks or 15k for the year. If NFL players opt out of the season they are getting 150k as unemployment yeah the math does not even comprehend here, the NFL player can afford groceries and rent/mortgage, you may not have a place to live in 3 months on 15k.

I’m not sure what you are getting at here. The NFL provides a great deal of revenue that will only benefit the economy. It needs definitely needs it these days. The players buyout was negotiated between the owners and NFLPA. Good on them for being in a line of work that compensates them at a fairly high rate. Hopefully I’m not furloughed, but if I am I hope I would be very grateful for any assistance the government could provide.

I think your missing the point, the NFL benefits a small amount of people. Not everyone despite its enormous revenue stream. 10 Billion per year and the league does not pay taxes because it is listed as a non profit which means no money back to the economy. Basic economics 101 will tell you its not as important as 80% of the population employed by small business being able to work and pay their bills and provide for their families. If 80% of the population cannot afford cable or to go to the games what good does having 1760 players, 80 refs, 160 Team physicians, and 224 coaches doing anything mean? 400 million people compared to 2,224 Granted yes I am not including the TV crews or Scouting crews, or facility/front office staff but still you get the point.

I am assuming the NFL season goes forward for this conversation. But I would expect the NFL TV ratings to be quite high. I would also expect the sports betting industry to get a large amount of action. Football obviously is extremely popular in this country and NFL essentially prints money. Having the season go forward can only be a good thing for the economy. Sure it doesn’t look very promising for fans being in the stands, but the NFL will still generate a large amount of revenue. Having an NFL season go forward brings in business to many industries directly and indirectly. That revenue can only be good for the economy, which needs a boost for sure.

asterisk talk in regards to this current season of any sport is nonsense. Reason and logic dictate this whole year, the whole world have an asterisk attached to EVERY minute detail of everyday life - school, work, shopping, traveling, etc.
Looking back in a few years folks won't say "oh X won the championship that year - doesn't count cuz COVID"

Also always love the aww shucks, gee willickers routine then turn around condescend and lay blame at another group of people because they may live or believe differently than you - WWJD amirite?

Sports teams employ a lot more people than just players and coaches. You got caterers, transportation and security, stadium staff. It's more in the tens of thousands.

Not true, the caterers are outsourced, janitorial is outsourced, security is outsourced, box office, and ticket takers are part time as well, stadium staff is dependent on positions and the event going on.

I used to work for our local concert promoter here in Detroit most of the staff you see at events are part time workers. The team itself employs maybe 100-300 workers full time, hence why the Lakers were able to receive the small business COVID-19 grant when they applied for it.

Yes except the stadiums are empty and o look no food is served during the games, no catering is brought in due to bubbles, no real promotion is done, no tickets are taken, no cleanup is really necessary except the locker rooms, no tailgating is allowed outside the stadiums so no vendor sales, so ... what money. Sorry man argument does not hold.

Not even the broadcasters are in the same stadium as the players right now. It is limited to essential personnel only. The broadcasters are in a remote studio where the game is broadcast to them. Then there audio is added to the fake crowd noise mix playing. Same with Radio broadcasting.

Players and staff are still going to need catering. Not sure what it is going to look like during a pandemic, but food is still going to be brought in. Security will still be on hand for safety of team personnel. I haven’t yet read how media will be handled during games, but typically they are fed as well. Likely going to be limited or no fans in most stadiums so obviously league revenue is looking at a decrease in totality, but the NFL will still be a profitable business if the season goes on. Obviously that is still up in the air, but should it happen there are going to be economic advantages at both the local and national levels.

Not saying it doesnt count -- just theres an asterick attached to it.

Its already being factored into $$ breeding values in horse racing due to how they changed the format of triple crown races etc.

Just like the nfl strike seasons have astericks.

I still have my contacts with the local sports teams I am telling you how it is being handled. There is no Food, There is little to no on premise Security, There are no Box office personnel, there is very little staff if any at all from external vendors. Media is not really allowed in the stadium if at all. They will not have fans in the stands even tho teams are planning on 50% capacity but that is not going to happen as state government conditions are no fans.

What you are stating is wishful thinking and will not happen until next season for all sports. As others and myself have said before there is no reason to risk it shut the sports down until there is a vaccine.

Do you think players are going to be packing their breakfast, lunch, and dinner for camp? That’s not how it works. NFL teams provide meals to their players. I’m sure the preparation and protocols are going to be different in our current environment, but players aren’t going to go hungry while preparing for a season. Fans in the stands is going to vary by state. Some states certainly won’t allow it, but some are hopeful for at least 25% capacity.
