Fans will have to Google it beginning next season if they want to access the NFL’s “Sunday Ticket” package.

The NFL announced a multiyear agreement on Thursday for Google to distribute the package of out-of-market Sunday afternoon games on YouTube TV and YouTube Primetime Channels.

The NFL was seeking $2.5 billion per season for the package, which has been on DirecTV since 1994. The satellite provider has paid $1.5 billion per year on an eight-year contract that expires at the end of this season.

Commissioner Roger Goodell said during an interview with CNBC over the summer that the next move for “Sunday Ticket” would be to a streaming service because that would be the best option for fans.

Goodell reiterated that with Thursday’s announcement.

“For a number of years we have been focused on increased digital distribution of our games and this partnership is yet another example of us looking towards the future and building the next generation of NFL fans,” he said in a statement.

It is the second time in less than two years that the NFL has partnered with a streaming service to air games. The league’s 11-year contract with Amazon Prime Video for Thursday night games started this season.

Besides Amazon, Apple and ESPN also expressed interest in “NFL Sunday Ticket.”

But yeah, if he misses even one game, he's out of the MVP discussion with the way Mahomes, Allen and Burrow (the new big 3 QBs) are playing.

Trust the beatwriters.

ST $2.5 billion for 7 yrs so $17.5 billion & they still will probs get $200 million/yr from another provider for bars/restaurants.

Well, that sucks. I was hoping the league would finally be able to offer just the stand-alone option like NBA/MLB offer. I really don’t like the idea of having to add another $65 on top of the Sunday Ticket cost just to watch one team. Got rid of DirecTV since there isn’t anything on cable to watch on the non local stations.

Its not totally clear yet but it seems like you dont have to be a youtube tv subscriber to get ST it may just be a standalone add to buy/watch on youtube tv.

I can't see them spending all this money to acquire this, and then not using it to force people onto their live service. I mean that is the entire point of investing this kind of money is to drive up your sub base just like direct tv did.

It's already $65 so how much is it going to be with ST? $110?

Maybe they can lock in ST behind a 6 month commitment.

Should be more $$ than that.
Again they have to charge a premium price to keep the subs down to comply with their cbs/fox contracts.

Considering they’re spending $2 billion each year to have Sunday Ticket while DirecTV was doing $1.5 billion, I would be very surprised if they did that. Perhaps they may offer a more cheaper, basic package along with it, but I don’t see them offering it with no need to subscribe to one of the services. At least not without making it cost more.

$2.5 billion.

This is probably what he means:

"Starting next season, under the seven-year deal, NFL Sunday Ticket will be available on as an add-on package on YouTube TV and on a standalone, à-la-carte basis on YouTube’s recently launched Primetime Channels (which doesn’t require a subscription to YouTube TV)."

Much like Amazon, Google won’t make money off of this initial contract. They are playing the long game. Allowing it to be purchased as a standalone product is fortunate for those of us that have Hulu Live and not YouTube TV.

Saves us some $.

Ala cart might mean buy the games you want at 5 dollars a game. That would be best option. Gimmie Red Zone and whatever games I want and im golden. Hell even a team option where I can just buy all 17 games for say the Bills or Chiefs. The other aspect is the 4/8 game split window option needs to be whatever games I want not locked like DTV had.
