McGahee has known he would have to take a pay cut or be released for awhile. He was due $6 million. Kelly Gregg is the bigger surprise cut, but I'm assuming he comes back for less money. He is probably not necessary as long as Terrance "Mount" Cody doesn't show up weighing 400 lbs, but he would still be a good player to have on the roster for less money.

As for Asomugha....I would assume he is tired of losing and could potentially take a shorter/smaller contract to play somewhere he thinks he can win a championship. This would not surprise me at all. I think a lot of the team names being thrown around as possible landing spots are teams that could potentially be good. I'm not so sure he wants to take a chance. I guess we'll see though. Baltimore is a dark horse candidate according to John Clayton at ESPN and the only way he is going there is if he takes less money. I'm sure most defensive players would love to play with Ray Lewis and Ed Reed, not to mention Ngata, Suggs and the rest of the defense. I can dream .

The Baltimore Sun and WBAL Baltimore are both reporting that Derrick Mason has been informed of his release.

Ravens informed TE Todd Heap of his release.
Heap was owed a $4.6 million salary, so the Ravens could still bring him back if he's amenable to a large pay cut. The 31-year-old ranked eighth in fantasy points per game among tight ends last season, also toasting Chiefs rookie safety Eric Berry for 10 catches and 106 yards in the playoffs. Still, Heap has lost several steps over the past couple of years and was set to lose playing time to youngsters Ed Dickson and Dennis Pitta. It remains to be seen if he'll be willing to finish his career in Baltimore as a role player.

A co-worker told me today that the Packers were supposedly looking into bringing in Brett Favre as a backup for Aaron Rodgers. Please tell me this is BS. I can't find anything online about that. I just can't imagine Green Bay would be stupid enough to even consider something so ridiculous.

You can add Mason to that. He is still a good possession receiver. Very surprised. They're going to sign some WRs apparently. I highly doubt they will go into the season with rookie Torrey Smith as the #2.

Oh he knew about the Eagles rumor as I had. He said some website was saying the Packers were also rumored. I'm guessing this is just some baseless rumor. Cannot imagine the Packers would even consider Favre for anything.

I don't get why anyone would think Favre would want to come back as a backup. It would be embarrassing for a Hall of Fame QB to come back for one more year just to be a backup. A Superbowl win as a backup wouldn't mean anything. There would always be an asterisk next to it saying he was a backup. Coming back to work for an organization as a coach of some kind would make more sense.

mason crosby
cullen jenkins
john kuhn
james jones

i think jones hurt his stock a little w/his drops during the post season....he'd be dumb to leave seeing how driver is on a downward spiral and he'd be a #2 recv'r this year or next year for sure.

so teams get what...3-4 days to sign their own players and reach out to others and then after the 4th day they can make offers to any/all players??

Cullen Jenkins coming back seems unlikely. I don't think the Packers will be willing to pay what another team like the Redskins will. So unless he is giving a discount, I don't see him coming back.

I expect them to resign at least 1 of the corners and Yanda. I think McGahee getting cut opens up carries for McClain if that is what Baltimore wants to do. McClain has said he wants to come back, but only if he is promised a bigger role like the one he got in 2008. I'm not too sure what they think of Landry. I like him a lot, but I think the Ravens are comfortable enough with Tom Zbikowski if Landry is too expensive to resign.

yeah i don't see jenkins sticking around either. hopefully cobb can step up and make an impact and then if jones leaves i won't feel so bad.

Sources tell the NY Daily News that signing Santonio Holmes is indeed the Redskins' "No. 1 priority" as they approach free agency.
This echoes a previous report from NFL Network's Jason La Canfora. The Daily News envisions a scenario in which the Redskins and Jets engage in a one-on-one bidding war for Holmes, similar to their fight over Laveranues Coles in 2003. Holmes has made it pretty clear that he's going to sign with the highest bidder. The Skins have more available cap space than the Jets at this point, but New York won't let him get away without an all-out fight.
