Cam Newton... what a humble guy. Hey Moviefan, how thrilled are you going to be not only getting a football player, but a self-professed "entertainer and icon" too?

http://espn.go.com/blog/nfceast/post...lready-an-icon

Quote:
SI.com's Peter King spoke with Auburn quarterback Cam Newton via phone this week and then tweeted a memorable quote:

"I see myself not only as a football player, but an entertainer and icon," Newton told King.
I assume we'll soon read more from this interview, but it sounds like that was a rough moment for Newton. As King points out, I'm not sure NFL decision makers want to hear about Newton's future as an icon. It's OK to aim high, but it's also fine to use some discretion.

Newton will be one of the most scrutinized players we've seen in years. He can start working on becoming an icon -- after he lands a starting job in a couple years. Does that quote rub anyone else the wrong way?

Maybe Newton should keep the icon stuff to himself when he visits with Redskins coach Mike Shanahan.

I heard that no way he'll be any good if he's thinking about "entertaining" already.

And like someone who won't come in here and post said, I agree they are entertainers, but still only a select few very very gifted players can mess around and not study. And I doubt he's one of him judging by how poorly he played in the Championship game. You better believe an NFL defense will be tougher than a pac-10 one.

Words cannot describe my disappointment if we end up drafting this bum.

No, his best football is behind him. Draft Gabbert, he's just beginning to tap into his potential. In 2016 I have no doubt that Newton is going to be labeled as a bust while Gabbert will be at the very least a solid NFL starter.

Honestly I don't think any QB in this draft is really worth a #3 overall pick. But ya, Gabbert is easily the best QB of the class IMO and should be at least a decent NFL QB. Try as I might I just cannot see Cam Newton as anything more than another Vince Young at best or JaMarcus Russell at worst. He's extremely immature with a poor set of ethics. You can get away with that stuff in college but not in the pros.

Not gonna lie, draft defense this year and get that set. Keep fitz for another year but stay near the bottom of the league. Then you can draft Luck next year with an improved defense. Most teams that will be in the foreseeable bottom have QB's already.

That's a big jump. Do you really think Buffalo will be in position for the #1 overall pick next year? I sure don't. Buffalo went 4-12 last season but that was three OT losses and several other close losses. With a little luck they could have won 6+ games.

Today at 4:00 Eastern is the deadline for teams to use the franchise tag. So far 12 players have been tagged. There probably won't be many more, although it's possible the Packers could tag Mason Crosby or Cullen Jenkins. I don't know why the Packers would choose to not use the tag at all. I could understand if they didn't franchise Jenkins because he's older and had injury problems and the franchise tag for defensive linemen is going to be over $10 million, but Crosby has shown he's one of the league's top kickers and the franchise tag for kickers is only about $3 million. They'd be crazy to risk losing him when the cost is so minuscule in relation to the team's total budget.

In a situation that would only happen in Oakland, the Raiders have placed the franchise tag on linebacker Kamerion Wembley. What makes the situation weird is that Wembley's contract had a provision in which the Raiders had a buyback option for $3.5 million. The Raiders exercised this option, but apparently it violated the 30% uncapped rule and the Raiders were told they could not execute the option. Instead Wembley will get over $10 million as the franchise player.

The Raiders have also signed cornerback Stanford Routt to a 3-year, $31 million deal with $20 million guaranteed. The Raiders have spent a lot of money on their defense between Routt, Richard Seymour, and Wembley's deals. It's now a near certainty that the team won't be able to afford Nnamdi Asomguha.

As Cowboys fans, we are looking 10-15 years into our future by watching Al Davis right now.

To be fair it wasn't the Raiders that signed Wimbley to that deal, it was the Browns. The deal was signed in 2006 and would have been allowed if the owners hadn't opted out of the CBA or if a new agreement had been reached.

There has been a lot of talk lately about the Cowboys drafting Cam Newton. I can't imagine the team would actually consider drafting Newton but the Cowboys are going to meet with him at the combine. I have trouble believing they would actually take him and a meeting doesn't mean much (teams can meet with 60 players at the combine) but it's an interesting story. There's also a lot of question about whether Newton would even be available to the Cowboys at #9. The Panthers, Bills, Cardinals, 49ers, and Titans all pick before the Cowboys and need a quarterback, and the Broncos and Bengals could need a quarterback as well.
