For those planning on purchasing a 4K HDR-capable television in the relatively near future, you might want to pass on this - https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=17194 for the time being.

And wait for the Dolby Vision HDR version, as the colorist from FotoKem did a good job with Andreas starting from the log files.

Apparently the surgery went very well. Kudos to Lisa, Mark and the team . Random Note to video journalists and bloggers….even if you were to stare at a 4,000 nit entirely illuminated screen, it will not ‘burn your retinas’ ….may well cause eye fatigue, a lecture perhaps for another day……..but not retinal pathology, let's try to refrain from such embellishment.

I love the newspaper with the date in the picture, like you're sending a ransom Polaroid to the owner of the T-Shirt. I would've believed you Penton.

I know you would have. The included *accessory* was for the sake of those who continue to read this thread on the down low to gain accurate information, but would never publicly acknowledge it.

So, are there any extraocular(outside dee eye) concerns in the minds of knowledgeable video engineers and scientists about the higher luminance output associated with future HDR display, one might ask?

Well….yes. There is concern about viewing even brighter images (HDR) late at night for it is a fact that melatonin suppression is intensity dependent (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3047226/
) . To explain….research has shown that night time light exposure suppresses the production of melatonin which is the major hormone that controls sleep and wake cycles. Soooo, a reduction in melatonin at night is associated with subjective levels of sleeplessness. However, the consequences are potentially more serious than only lousy sleep outcomes….http://www.nbcnews.com/nightly-news/...p-470874691595

Namely….studies have suggested there is an increase in the risk of impaired immune system function, and possibly cardiometabolic consequences such as type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, obesity, and heart disease (e.g. http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/1...0.00773.x/full )

Soooo, the thinking is (note to Ray…that means educated speculation), that it may well be even more important not to watch HDR content just prior to bedtime, i.e. finish watching the HDR movie or show at least an hour prior.

P.S.
Geoff, in the meantime, here’s a T-shirt for you (not even necessary to compete against those dinos to get one, just requires a little $.) - http://teespring.com/raptorwheelietshirt If not interested, please pass on to mike.

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/beh...n-dolby-809828 < rogue be the 2nd HDR (DV) graded feature film by Company3 (part of Deluxe Entertainment Services), although this one isn't 4K, like Tomorrowland.

So, what happened? We had the Tomorrowland Dolby Cinema rollout with invitation only for the techfluencers who dutifully praised it. Then San Andreas. Trying to find normal theatergoers comments about the Dolby Cinema HDR offerings was like looking for a needle in a haystack. The comments I did find were noncommittal at best. Granted, there are only a handful of Cinemas equipped to show Dolby Cinema HDR, but really?

Seems to me, you better wow theatergoers with HDR if you expect to make much of an impact with HDR in the home theater.

Well, firstly, I don’t consider the press to be ‘techfluencers’…the good ones (like 'news-breaking' Carolyn ) are pure reporters. I think of ‘Techfluencers’ as more akin to the studio executives who are directors or VPs of technology (e.g. http://www.hollywooditsociety.com/sp.../who-attended/ ), cinematographers and Directors who were ‘by invitation only’ invited to the Dolby Vision showings set-up at for instance the Harmony Gold ( http://www.harmonygold.com/theater/ ) and Vine theater long before Tomorrowland in Dolby Vision premiered at the El Cap for the Audio Video website blogger types.

But to directly answer your question as to what/why/how much *wow* there is/will be with the HDR version of some upcoming movies, you have to understand that the final look is more related to what the filmmakers are/were trying to accomplish with their storytelling. It’s very dependent upon creative choice and plus, it’s still a learning process for all the filmmakers.

What I mean is that like for instance with T-land, the Director, DP and VFX could have chosen to go more *WOW* with the contrast and color palette, but they weren’t out to construct the movie aesthetic around a powerful post production tool…..like some viewers may have experienced with material shown at professional trade shows…IBC, NAB, CineGear, etc.

But I think that anyone with a remotely critical eye should be able to identify the superior color and contrast of the HDR as opposed to the SDR version of T-land had they’d been viewed side-by-side in the theater setting. Viewing only the HDR version in a theater and how much someone will appreciate the improved PQ… well, people have different sensibilities. Also, I suspect that some early Users (Directors) will grade in Dolby Vision in order to enable a more refined , elegant look to their work, which would otherwise be flat, whereas others will barely exploit the tool at all (e.g. Directors like David F. who prefer a desaturated look with a lot of their material). Different strokes for different folks.

Dolby Vision in the theater….Dolby Vision at home. In regards to this idiom “tail wagging the dog”, what will turn out to be the tail and what will be the dog?

That's some crazy $hit right there.

I take it none of these people are gamers? Or if they are then they have inadvertently subjected themselves for cause of sleeplessness, impaired immune system function, possible cardiometabolic consequences such as type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, obesity, & heart disease.. yet just discovered these facets through HDR luminance.
