Are those file sizes compressed? Seems small.

But you can't deny the look and feel of film. Even if it's projected digitally.

I've seen several movies in the past couple years that I've had to look up the specs to see that they were actually shot digital.

Film is pretty much becoming obsolete.

Possibly a stupid question but can we still watch these new mastered in 4K Blu-ray's if you haven't got a 4K TV? Or so you need a 4K Tv to view them?

Sadly, yes. It won't be long before Kodak goes out of business. Hell, even IMAX is having digital cameras.

Quick answer, No. You don't need 4K TV.

I think we should write up a sticky FAQ explaining Sony's Mastered in 4K Blu-ray.

For the most part yes, film usually looks better than digital. Film generally has a better tendency of showing lower resolution images better than digital can. Digital 2K is not superior to film, it just looks like an acceptable alternative.

I would not be surprised if we still see some 35mm installations when Episode VII is released. The cost of re-installing 35mm is not at all significant. I think we will see some of the IMAX "rail" systems come to life for the release of Episode VII. The buzz, hype and demand for The Dark Knight and the The Dark Knight Rises in 15/70 was impressive.

I don't think it will be completely gone, somebody will make it if Episode VII demands it.

Hey now, i wasn't still expecting a complete photochemical workflow(i guess i'll always have Christopher Nolan for that......for now). I wish. But still having film around is good enough for me. Going through a DI and all. I love the way the movie Burn After Reading looks-

Plenty? Don’t count on it. For it’s really difficult to find a lab that will process film anymore, even if you can get the celluloid from Kodak. You really, really have to want to shoot on film what with going through all the hassle involved with it these days.

Yes, a single uncompressed 4K image requires a data rate of about 955 Mbyte/sec (at 24 fps) which is way too much to be handled by digital theater projection systems so, compression has to be applied. DCPs are produced with an intra-frame compression algorithm known as JPEG2000….http://www.iso.org/iso/catalogue_det...csnumber=37674

Universal application of JPEG 2000 compression to digital images (be it either 2K or 4K) makes global interoperability of Digital Cinema possible.

Just make sure that whoever writes it up entitles the sticky as the “Official” explanation; otherwise, it will not qualify as credible fact.
