Or in the case of White House Down, uh, prematurely optimistic, see the very recent imdb ‘update’… http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2334879/...ef_=tt_dt_spec On the other hand, this is fact…not wrong and not premature – DCP for White House Down Sony Pictures Releasing Deluxe Digital Cinema 2048 x 858 (2K scope) 204 GB Run Time: 2:11:32 5.1 Audio |

Unlike Behind the Candelabra which was shot with an Epic and, although not listed on IMDB (to date), went through a 4K DI (at FotoKem). And for those interested

Rendering visual effects for an entire movie in 4K resolution requires a lot more time and resources. Something, I think many studios are unwilling to indulge at the moment. Unlike 3D production or 3D conversion, cinemas haven't been selling movies in 4K at a higher ticket price. Unless we start seeing cinemas selling 4K screenings separately with different ticket pricing, the transition to 4K production will be quite slow. And it doesn't help that the general audience are also paying a massive ticket price for Digital IMAX DMR blowups from 2K DIs. So as you can see, it's not about how much can the studios save from utilizing a 2K DI. But whether or not it will yield an improved profit when the films are released. There's lots of factors to consider. I'm not sure if you've noticed, but Sony seems to be the strongest proponent in pushing for 4K DI. Obviously, leading the way for other studios to follow suit. From your list, there's: 1. After Earth 2. The Amazing Spider-Man 3. Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance 4. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo 5. The Green Hornet 6. Men in Black 3 7. The Smurfs 2 8. That's my Boy 9. This is the End 10. Total Recall 11. White House Down The other films don't seem to be as visual effects heavy. It will probably be a couple of years before 4K Digital Production will go into full swing. |

Or choppy frame rate. Transformers Dark of the Moon had a few particle and smoke effects that didn't quite match up with the film frame rate. But it's short and nobody really notices it at first glance anyway.
Anyway, BDA is researching and working on extending Blu-ray to support 4K, I'm sure Sony will continue to accelerate and push for more 4K productions in the near future. |
