So, temperature checks at airports and such, are not infallible with regards to detection and thusly containment. What isn’t known is to what degree people with no symptoms are driving transmission.

IMO, that should pretty much put the final nail in the "Hollywood to provide 8K content" coffin.

People said the same thing about BD vs. DVD, and later 4K vs. HD

Immature new display tech vs. mature display tech, using older transfer tech is NOT an indicator!

DVD released: “there is no need for DVD”
BD released: “there is no need for BD”
UHD released: “there is no need for UHD”

Now with 8K: “there is no need for 8K”

Same song and dance everytime there is a new technology being introduced.

BD vs. DVD made no sense. The world was moving to high definition so there had to be an HD disc especially with the huge revenues that Hollywood was getting.

HD to UHD - same thing because HD was now old tech and firmly established.

4K to 8K - 4K has gone pretty much nowhere as far as content. No 4K CBL, no 4K OTA. 4K relies pretty much on streaming, EST and UHD BD. And a great deal of 4K content is just HD upscaled to UHD.

So what will be the driving force for the creation of 8K content? Because the TV manufacturers are selling 8K TVs? IMO - just not enough of a reason especially when you read about industry people not being able to tell the difference between native 8K and upscaled 4K to 8K. The only clip in that test that garnered any real positive response was the nature clip by S. Spears.

Not this again. Especially not from long time member of the forum. Virtually a blind person can see the benefit of UHD even from 2K DI from the colourspace and HDR.

Well . . . if that's the case then there should be no need to have native 8K content. Just upscale 4K to 8K

I think there's a line of demarcation between the call for 8K content and 8K displays. The latter can provide much the same benefits as 4K TVs did when they first appeared, relative to the resolution below them, and as manufacturers will seemingly be sticking their best processing and other display tech inside their 8K models then for overall picture quality the 8K will win, even if leaving the resolution out of it.

BUT as these sets are apparently so astonishingly good at handling <8K content then it would appear that having actual 8K playback material is moot. I'm a paid-up fan of the 2K upscale club anyway when it comes to UHD as I've lost count of the amount of times an upscaled UHD disc has resoundingly beaten the BD equivalent for things like colour, dynamic range and even outright resolution. Not that I don't think that 4K finishes aren't worth it for conventional 24fps motion picture content - they are, but the returns are already diminishing so when you get into the realms of 8K things start to drop off big time.

The theme of oversampling so recently broached in this thread proves the point: shirley you'd need something like a 12K sensor to get a decently oversampled 8K image, particularly if dealing with a bayered sensor, so as and when these cameras come online (I won't envy the DITs on those shows!) may be when 8K 'real world' content starts to truly outpace its upscaled 4K and 2K cousins.

Completely different story. UHD is about resolution, WCG and HDR; 8K is only about resolution. A new member of this forum can comprehend this while you can’t?
