The reason I ask is because movies and series on my parents' 80" 4K UHD Samsung TV have a too-glossy, smooth, almost DNR-ed look to them, which I don't like at all. I think most of that stuff was shot on digital video, so I guess it's supposed to look like that, but I obviously don't want my movies shot on film looking smooth or glossy. I want every bit of their inherent organic, grainy look.
Don’t the new Vizios have the new filmmaker mode? If so, just use that and you’ll be good to go. Otherwise, use Calibrated mode, And make sure reduce noise, judder, and motion blur are all off.

Thanks for the tips! It's a 2020 model, so I hope it does have filmmaker mode.

Also note, that you can have every bit of the organic look on your parents' TV too. It's purely down to the horrible default settings on that TV - which will be maxed out Soap Opera Effect city with DNR on max. It would be relative simple to fix theirs too by tweaking the settings. It's not in and of itself a reason to reject that TV (lack of Dolby Vision is a reason, though )

sorry Geoff, perhaps a glorious pole to be included in a later trailer, before the premiere?

Yep. It's more a measure of the economy than the quality of cheap TVs.

But that 4% who do buy the expensive TVs - in amongst there are many AVS forum users who replace their TVs with the newest model every year. My mind boggles!

My friend needed a 24" TV to fit in a particular place on a particular wall for his bedroom. This is to replace an existing TV which has now broken. He can't buy one. A 32" TV might, MIGHT fit. I tried to find one for him.
  • Sony hasn't made a 32" TV since 2017, and now, 43" is the smallest size. So he can't buy a Sony.
  • LG - no 32" TVs. 43" is the smallest size. So he can't buy an LG.
  • Samsung has ONE 32" TV in their 2020 range, the "Frame", which is pretty nasty: it's an 8 bit panel, not even 8bit+ FRC bit just 8bit! FFS! And impossible to find peak luminance specs for it.

So basically, he's in that majority 92% of the market (ie not the top 8% spending the "big bucks"), wants to buy a TV, has the money, but can't! It's an absolutely ludicrous situation when the manufacturers are not providing what customers need.

then to appease them, I would suggest that they purchase a television having Dolby Vision IQ and view HDR content in that mode, or a TV that has ‘Filmmaker mode’.

P.S.
Sheesh, it seems the hobbyist videophiles here are more astute and flexible in terms of being amenable to watching their movies at home in near reference conditions than are many people who work in the industry and post on cml.

BTW, two of the co-inventors of IQ, Robin and Robert - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...q#post17938732
will be speakers at the upcoming SMPTE 2020, albeit presenting another HDR-related topic, and you can always query them with regards to your HDR home viewing dissatisfaction.

I’ve already used this Tom Cruise line from Top Gun: Maverick on a mountain bike ride when someone on a dualie (suspension) bike lectured me about still sometimes riding a front suspension only bike – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qSqVVswa420#t=1m51s

following which I proceeded to kick his buttocks by the end of the ride, by a good 5 minutes. The line will likely also come in handy if/when somebody says physical media for movies is about to die.

UHD Alliance Announces Hisense, Amazon Prime Support for Filmmaker Mode

Quote:
The UHD Alliance on Sept. 30 announced that Hisense has joined CE companies Panasonic, Vizio, Samsung, LG, Kaleidescape and Philips in supporting Filmmaker Mode and that Amazon Prime will begin supporting it next year.

The announcements came during an online presentation with DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group.

Filmmaker Mode, introduced by the UHD Alliance in August 2019, is designed to reproduce the content in the way the creator intended. It allows viewers to enjoy a more cinematic experience on their UHD TVs when watching movies by disabling all post-processing (e.g. motion smoothing, etc.) so the movie or television show is displayed as it was intended by the filmmaker, preserving the correct aspect ratios, colors and frame rates, according to the Alliance.

UHD Alliance president Mike fiddler noted that CE companies supporting Filmmaker Mode represent a big chunk of TV unit shipments both domestically and globally.

YouTube has started rolling out 4K streaming to Apple TV 4K. However, not all users are seeing the 4K option just yet. HDR is not supported and there are limitations.

Speaking of YouTube, the new Chromecast with Google TV transcodes HLG videos to HDR10. Not sure why. The device supports HLG (tested demos through Plex).
