I see your invisibility serum worked, PM. Which is good because judging by the photo you’re not wearing any pants. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Since my wife is arguably the brains in the family and definitely the boss (if you know what I mean, Wabo ,
[Show spoiler]no sense in risking celibacy on a Saturday night
) instead of catching up alone with all the soccer action from yesterday I’d recorded on TV, I was dominated into watching Enola Holmes last night with my better half, despite the rez (as circled) –

I kinda liked it. I hope some of the professional cinematographers out there don't see some of the scenes as being too dark with their home TVs.

1080P HDR is probably the way most ATSC 3.0 main broadcast will be shown. We watched it a few days ago in HDR10 and found the video quality quite good. We also enjoyed the movie.

ATSC 3.0 is using HLG for their HDR format. Your TV converts HLG to HDR10?

Under the specs for UHD for ATSC 3.0, 1080P HDR is considered an UHD format while 1080P is considered an HD format.

But Ultra High Definition, by definition, surely cannot include 2005's 1080p High Definition!! (Regardless of whether it's HDR or not). That's utter madness and will introduce new confusion.

Just call it 1080p HDR. But no-one should be calling it UHD with a straight face.

Why not? We call 2K upscales (with HDR) 'UHD' with a straight face. The UHD name doesn't denote resolution, or anything much really, over regular HD other than it is 'Ultra'. And 1080p HDR is included in the UHD Blu specs too.

ATSC 3.0 UHD 1080P HDR includes 10 bit WCG. ATSC 1.0 stops at 1080i.

They needed a low end classification of UHD because they knew that no broadcaster was going to use his full bandwidth to broadcast a single 4K HDR channel other than once a year for the Super Bowl.

There are three formats for UHD ATSC 3.0:

2160P @ 120 FPS + HDR
2160P @ 60 FPS + HDR
1080P @ 60 FPS + HDR

There are two formats for HD ATSC 3.0

1080i @ 60 Fields/sec.
720P @ 60 FPS.

Yes, but those upscales are done at the studio level and the format output is 2160p. There is no way you can output 1:1 the original 2K from a UHD source (yeah, you can output it at 1080p but the player is downconverting that upconverted signal). The UHD disc/stream is still 2160p.

UHD was supposed to be 4K & 8K formats only AFAIK.

The ATSC 3.0 broadcasters wanted to be able to say they are broadcasting in UHD. But they didn't want to use all their bandwidth for a single channel. I believe it was Joe Kane who was working on 1080P HDR and showed numerous clips to broadcasters, and how good it looked and how much of their allotted bandwidth they still had left. SOLD!

Strikes me as bizarre that there isn't a 1080P @ 120 FPS + HDR option for sports content.

Just because a format is listed doesn't mean they will actually use it. There are a number of 3D formats also included in the ATSC 3.0 specs. As is 8K, but not with the current H.265 codec. Will require H.266 which is also part of the specs.

Max bandwidth is 57 Mbps. per ATSC 3.0 channel - each broadcaster has a single channel to use.

I'm surprised there isn't a 1440P @ 60 FPS + HDR.

4K source at the broadcaster, but scaled down/transmitted at 1440p, then it would scale up nicely back to native 4K displays, whilst still being bandwidth efficient.

That's a computer format not a TV format right?
