Despite being a movie lover, I think that the general population is as much, or arguably more, interested in watching sports as viewing movies and gaming during this time of year….and for that matter come Nov. – Dec. 2022 with the unusually winter scheduled World Cup in Qatar.
Sony electronics even admits that “When an image displayed on the screen that may easily cause image retention the screen brightness gradually reduces in order to protect the TV from image retention. The brightness returns to normal if you change the screen or perform another action that eliminates the risks of image retention.”

Well, folks are not going to change to a different channel or turn off the TV during a soccer or football game as you could miss a decisive moment. Rather than relying solely on testimonials from this or that user owning one or the other TV at home, let’s have a more scientific analysis with both TVs set up to see with camera capture showing the imagery if this image retention/burn-in protection process adversely affects viewing of an entire soccer, football, or basketball game. Sports fans want to know the answer. Let the chips fall where they may, even if it affects sales or this or that TV. Additionally, due to their reasonable (for most) price range, some were really interested in those two TVs from the get-go despite their non-presence at your shootout - https://www.avsforum.com/threads/202...#post-61023095

Everything I’ve seen by “professional” TV reviewers on Youtube showing dimming with either the A80J or A90J has been with regards to gaming and not SDR sports, e.g. –

So, I view the situation like this. Teaching hospitals (academic institutions that teach residents and fellows as well as being at the forefront of medical practice) –

(^ picture courtesy my wife from last Dec. while she was taking a 15 min. break outside to get some fresh air and unwind from 4T UC Irvine Medical Center)

teaching hospitals, take on difficult cases such as elderly folks with less than optimal health for interventions and surgeries like total knee replacements, etc. whom other institutions, will and do, turn away for they fear a poor patient outcome will affect their morbidity and mortality statistics which in turn could adversely affect their financial bottom line. However, life isn’t all about making money.

I think of Robert’s place as a Teaching institution too , albeit CE store-wise, in contrast to places like Best Buy or Costco, etc. Take the case, Robert as the Sony 77” A80J is going on sale in 3 days - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...e#post19367437 and sports fans really want to know, with evidence rather than testimonials to this or that, if live feed SDR sports broadcasts dim due to this anti-image retention/burn-in protection process. If you can’t do it yourself then recruit Keep it Classy, FOMO, Whisper or other guys that frequent your store and flood the internet with display tech YouTubes. Have them record the live feed imagery of a football or soccer match with the said TVs side-by-side showing a game in its entirety.

Let’s not be left only with behind the scenes ultra-short sequenced tidbits and hallway chats, i.e. – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqC7fQyaaX0#t=2m24s

Anyway, since we’re talking about stores, Best of the Best non-teaching CE store - https://www.cepro.com/projects/ce-pr...om-experience/

^ Heck g, I don’t know, we sell nothing here and I stopped offering giveaways years ago – https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...es#post1793726 . Maybe it’s because everyone has returned from long summer vacations or at least short road trip getaways, e.g. https://www.pjtf.org/ and are now back at home spending more time online in general?

Maybe a horde of motorcycle freaks discovered the crystal motorcycle behind the official TG: M props mug - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...g#post19051622 and are wondering what brand of motorcycle it is? Your guess is as good as mine.

And we're gong to need more staff (docs and nurses) in hospitals ...

* Number of views in the HDR thread is a small fart compared to the reality outside (New York for one). Views mean less than nothing, ...

I think it may have been more precise to say that we will easily exceed ½ million views for this thread for the month of September . Now, on with the show -

Episode 13 includes HDR discussion beginning around 12:00 after mentioning Inside Out, followed by a rather extensive discussion about 8K displays, the most demanding content for consumer displays, specular (highlights) vs. full frame brightness, the belief in the accuracy/or not of static HDR metadata, filmmaker mode as a cure for motion interpolation, etc.) -

P.S.
One service credential that wasn’t listed during the introduction which may be of interest to the membership here is that back in the day during the time the Blu-ray Disc Association was developing the parameters for UHD BD, Michael served as a company representative and thusly as I recall a voting member on some ballots when deciding what to/or not include in the UHD BD video spec.

follow-up, confirmation to ^: https://www.costco.com/sony-77%22-cl...100757947.html

and now lowered to $3,099.99 at Best Buy

one caveatthat sports fans should keep in mind is Sony’s own acknowledgement to the dimming issue –

Sony A80J Imagine Retention Prevention Dimming Testing, Is It The Achilles Heel? - YouTube
the relevance of which has yet to be determined with certainty in regards to being detrimental to a live feed of an entire football or soccer game especially on a bright sunny day at a stadium or other sports and venues like an indoor professional basketball or ice hockey game, nevertheless being of significant concern to gamers as expressed and proven in that ‘Achilles Heel’ video linked in the quote above.

For sports fans or gamers willing to take the risk and hassle of not being satisfied with their purchase, the good thing about buying a TV from Costco is that they will accept returns for 90 days and you can schedule a pickup at your home with their transportation guys in case you care not return it yourself to your local Costco. Plus, if you can’t get the TV downstairs all by yourself, they will go up and fetch it too.

Thanks to Penton's note above we were 10M+ Sept. 06.

So about 733,000 new views in 24~25 days. At 25 days, that's 29,320 a day.
I think my eyebrows just singed off from that pace.
Or else there's been a cosmic surge in HDR interest this month. Just sayin'...
