Are there any other known specifications about the 4K BD's, such as anamorphic encoding? The one thing about the BD spec that I thought was shortsighted was that all content is 1.78:1 so a 2.40:1 movie would waste scan lines on the letterbox bars instead of the actual frame.

Ouch, doby. ![]() I don't want to get into all that cause we don't know the whole story. Besides. Penton seems like he knows his shit so he is somebody. He was the one who started that voting thread about sony switching to DTSMA or dolbyTHD. We all voted and sony switched so he's from somewhere. Lets all move on. |

I wouldn't talk about that either: Sony had already adopted the new encoding tools and the poll was more or less to see if there would be negative feedback. As a serious poll it was hugely flawed to begin with (and was not the reason for switching as outlined above).

For expediency and accuracy (bad spelling and all), Paragraph 2 was directly copied and pasted from an email correspondence to me from an honest and honorable Vice President (in charge of that project). I don’t believe that this poll was ‘flawed’ either…https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=104430 I do think that The Hobbit 3D 48fps poll/inquiry which I posted may, in a sense, be ‘flawed’ however and honestly, I’ve given up ![]() Also, it looks like I won’t be able to procure a scientifically credible ‘AVATAR 3D’ - side effect control anyway. As to The Hobbit, technically, I was hoping to see one of the filmmakers elaborate a bit on my ‘processing’ assertion here…https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ng#post6894679 But apparently, no interviews in that regard have yet been forthcoming, so still waiting on that, especially given all the anecdotal experiences from both ‘cinephiles’ and ‘Joe6packs’ that the initial part of the movie appeared “sped-up”, which I have my doubts is simply a psychological response. Additionally, on another note, the blown highlights were an interesting color correction decision, for I don't believe they are secondary to a deficiency related to the RED cameras themselves. |

Would you still be able to see the film on a normal 16:9 tv then?

The reality is that everyone has a unique threshold for visual sensory discrimination and no overly-simplified chart is going to be accurate.

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ve#post6698239 ^ especially read the hyperlink after the phrase “certainly not to be set in stone, see…” Anthony also chimed in somewhere a few pages back as to its inherent deficiency, e.g. “starts to become noticeable” but I just don’t have time right now to find and link his post. P.S. I guess I was typing and searching while Chevy had already responded to your query. Last edited by Penton-Man; 01-03-2013 at 06:27 PM. Reason: added a P.S. |

This would be amazing: 1.33:1 = 2873x2160 16:9 = 3840×2160 21:9 = 5040x2160 But if it'd be anamorphic, which would be more likely, everything would just be 3840x2160, which would be corrected to it's OAR. A format where the total amount of 8,294,400 pixels would just be evenly distributed over the image, without black bars, would be nice too, but that'd be highly unlikely. You'd get resolutions like 4403x1886. |

be “updated periodically with new, additional content”? Some sort of physical delivery media like a disc, memory card, etc.? or, perhaps for instance, in the more long term future - Vis-a-vie the PlayStation Network to deliver the content to something like the next generation of PlayStation? |

Well, if I were a betting man, I would bet that new, additional content comes on Blu-ray data discs which will be loaded into the server….if I were a betting man. |

I guess in the spirit of 4K fair play, I should also make mention of the Odemax distribution platform which people should hear more about at Sundance….
http://odemax.com/information.html Not just new 4K digitally originated content from independent filmmakers but, I also hope to see some classics forthcoming because of this comment…“That's why with REDray and Odemax, classic films can now be scanned in 4k and delivered to the home in 4K” John Farhat ODEMAX |
