Point being, it needs content in order to develop into anything other than a niche of a niche electronic experience. Until that occurs (if ever) I doubt it will evolve into anything your average consumer….and even all but a few home theater enthusiasts will be much interested in, esp. given its price point. Content rules…remember how fast HD DVD died when WB went Blu-ray exclusive? And by “content” I mean POPULAR content, not material that all but filmmakers’ friends (red users) and family would only be interested in viewing. Unless RED can get one of the majors to supply them with popular content or RED Studios can produce its own hit feature films, then, at best what they can offer is a vehicle for independent filmmakers to get their movies noticed (and subsequently seen) by Hollywood movie executives….which, as an aside, is not such a bad thing for filmmaking. It also means that they had better equally accept/promote 2K, HD (i.e. non-high rez) content because about the LAST thing most independent filmmakers (not technophiles who post online all day long) think about is shooting at high resolution for their projects. There are much better things to spend their budget on. For consumers in general, I think it’s still not a serious contender for your entertainment dollar at this point. Rather than what’s available via red ray, personally, I’d prefer to watch for free on YouTube at my leisure, a bear haul away a dumpster from the back of a restaurant in Colorado (rather than unceremoniously diving into it looking for food like his fellow brethren would), as that demonstrates one industrious bear and it leaves me wondering where the hell did he roll it away to? |

Oh lord, I see it’s going to be a busy morning as someone’s opened a can of video worms topic with a PM to me and first off, I’ve got to search for some select quotes to illustrate the point.
Several moments needed. I think I’ve got time though as the guys aren’t coming over for a group ride until 10:30 A.M. and I’m all ready. Not to mention all caffeined-up. ![]() |

I continue to receive PMs intermittently from people infatuated with ‘true 4K’ as opposed to ‘up-converted 4K’ whom feel they would be horrendously cheated out of picture quality with up-conversion of a good HD source until more ‘native’ 4K content becomes readily available, but clearly are basing such assumption on layman theory (i.e. ‘true’ 4K gots to be significantly better than ‘fake’ 4K ) and who actually don’t own a quality 4K consumer TV ( such as the XBR-84X900) ….and are pretty much clueless as to how good up-conversion can be…if done well from a good source, whether it originates in the display itself with a good up-converting engine or in post production ( https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...on#post7581588 )
The latest PM I got was precipitated by this post from member Ruined…. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ed#post7889778 Let’s put an urban myth by non-owners to rest (at least so I don’t receive anymore PMs on the topic) with a review from one of the consumer AV sites which hobbyists like to read. Focus on these (relevant to the point) captured quotes which have been bolded by me for easy reading emphasis… “Sony’s opening orientation brief included comparisons of native 4K material and the same material in 2K, but upconverted by the set. They used two XBR-84X900s side by side, both in their Cinema 1 default settings. I guessed wrong as to which was which—and anticipated up front that my guess would be wrong! The simulated 4K looked very subtly sharper when I focused on the tiniest details in the picture. This was likely due to a little overeagerness in the upconversion algorithms, but it did not look edgy or processed. So, after reading that ^, I guess some skeptical people may still honestly think that up-conversion can’t look that ^ good and Sony must have rigged the demo, something like which has been alleged to be occurring with HD in 4K vs. 1080p demos…http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/beh...r-hd-is-578724 Fair enough, continue reading….. “After the briefing, we turned off all but one of the XBR-84X900s, and I was left on my own….I also sampled a number of Blu-ray Discs I brought with me, and as upconverted by the set, none of them disappointed. In fact, despite their 2K roots, they had enough of the 4K look to make me less concerned about the current shortage of native 4K source material. One of the movies on the Sony server was Battle: Los Angeles. I knew this ahead of time and brought the Blu-ray version for comparison. Once you locate a scene in this film without shaky-cam syndrome, it’s a sharp, crisp BD transfer. While this comparison was done by switching inputs, with a slight delay, on the same set rather than side by side on two sets, my earlier impression was reinforced: The upconversion of a good 2K source was very nearly indistinguishable from native 4K on this set.” From….http://www.hometheater.com/content/s...ra-hdtv-page-3 |

![]() I must admit that ever since about 2005, when Samsung (for those readers who are soccer challenged, note the players in the upper left in the all blue kit who are actually wearing a jersey with Samsung emblazed across the front of their chest, which you would be able to see if they were standing still and the entire delivery chain were in 4K - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technolog...in-the-UK.html ) became the main sponsor for Chelsea….I have not been a fan of that team. Not to mention, when I think of Samsung, I think of Joe - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...oe#post7930059 and his disciples, which invariably becomes a waste of my time. Truth be told, and no disrespect to Samsung supporters, but for me, personally…. rather than Samsung, in terms of consumer and professional TVs/monitors I do have some brand bias as I’m much more of a Sony (http://store.sony.com/c/S_4KTV/en/c/...633370-871-270 ) , Dell (http://vimeo.com/71359646 ) or Sharp and Dolby fan (even though it’s only a 42” HD display - http://www.dolby.com/us/en/professio...200-video.html - which, b.t.w., according Joe's testing/hypothesis, by logical extension would then probably be a tremendous waste of money for a post house to invest in, as it isn’t “6 ft. wide”. ![]() P.S. To those who inquired in earlier PM’s as to “who the heck is ‘Lou’” in reference to this past conversation - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ou#post7803154 , well, Lou hangs out at around the 2 min. mark of the Dolby clip which I linked above. P.S. #2 – And Stee, what’s with the Chelsea supporters?...other than berating interim manager Rafael Benitez, when I watch their home matches on TV here in the U.S., the crowd seems as quiet and reserved as those at a polo match. Is it the placement of the microphones and/or Fox Soccer’s feed, or are the Chelsea supporters nearly brain dead during the action on the field? Last edited by Penton-Man; 08-06-2013 at 06:20 PM.
